1 ALIOE A. WALLMAN AND ALOIS B. SIAILIGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BED-VIBRATOR.
Y SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters lratent No. 761,862, dated J' une 7, 1904.
Application filed August 28, 1903.
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ALICE A. WALLMAN and ALoIs B. SALIGER, citizens' of the United States of America, residing' at New York, in l the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Vibrators, of whichthe following is aspeciiication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a bed-vibrator which will rapidly agitate the wire mattress of a bed on which a person may be lying, thereby producing aslight agitation of said personf which operates to start the blood in circulation and overcoming any congestion which may have resulted from excessive walking or other exercise or from a cramped position, a further object being to provide such an apparatus which is easily and quickly adjusted to a bed of any construction and which is positive in operation, economical in construction, and well adapted to accomplish the result desired.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of the invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view ofthe apparatus in operative position, -a portion of a bedframe andwire mattress being shown. Fig. Q is a partial sectional View thereof, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Q
In the drawings forming part of this speci- [ication we have shown the sidc rod cof a bed of the usual construction, over which is mounted a portion of the usual spring-mat- 'tress c2, all of said bed not being shown fory the reason that it is of the well-known iron form, but the same may be of any other construction, as will be understood. Passing around the side rod a, preferably about the center thereof, is strap of a frame b2, of iron or other metal, and which is held thereon by means of bolts or screws b3 in such a manner as not to permit of movement, and the frame consists of a vertical member b", a horizontal sei-a1 110,171,080. (No man.)
member b5 atthe bottom thereof, and a wing member L, provided with an overhang 67. Mounted on the horizontal member b5 of the -frame b2 is an electric motor c of the usual or any other construction and to the shaft c2 of which is secured a pinion c3, which engages a gear-wheel 0*, rotatably mounted in the wing member 6G of the frame Z22, and to the outer end of the shaft c5 of which is secured a disk i c, upon which is mounted a pin Ic7 eccentric to the shaft c5. Firmly connected with the wire mattress a2 of the bed is a rod d, the other end of which is pivotally connected with the pin c7, `and upon the front of the vertical member?)4t of the frame Z22 is mounted a rheostat d2, which is in electrical communication with the motor c and with a suitable source of electric supply, as indicated by the dynamo' d3, said rheostat being provided with the usual arm KZ".
When the arm d* of the rheostat d2 is moved froinits normal position, it will be seen that the motor c isactuated, the speed or power thereof being governed by the distance which the arm d" has been moved, land as the frame 722 is rigidly connected to the side rod c of the bed and the rod Z is moved rapidly to and fro by means of the pinion c, gear-wheel c", and eccentric-pin c7, the mattress c2 is also rapidly moved thereby, said movement being of a vibratory nature, and vertical movement of which is prevented by the weight of the bedclothing or of a person lying thereon, and when it is desired to stop the said movement of the parts all that is necessary is to move the arm di back to its normal position..
It will be seen from the construction that the apparatus may be connected with a bed in a few moments or disconnected therefrom and placed out ofthe way, and the saine may be entirely incloscd in a casing, if desired, thereby preventing the entanglement of the bedclothing or soiling the same with grease or dirt, and various other changes in and modiiications of the construction herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing we claim as ne\v, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isd
1. In a bed-vibrator, the combination of a bed, a mattress, an electric motor, and means connected to said electric motor and mattress whereby the latter is independently vibrated.
2. In a bed-vibrator, the combination of a bed, a Wire mattress, a motor connected to said bed and Wire mattress whereby an independent vibratory movement is imparted to said Wire mattress.
3. In a bed-vibrator, the combination of a bed, a motor removably attached thereto, a
mattress, and means connected to said mattress and motor whereby an independent vibratory movement is imparted to said mattress.
In testimony that We elaim the foregoingas our invention we have signed our names in presence ofthe subscribing.' witnesses, this 2 i th day of August, 1903.
