Be it known that I, EDWARD HEBERT, of.
State'of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tip-Holders for Bil,- hard-Cues, of=which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in tip-holders for billiard-cues One of the objects of this invention is to provide for the adjustment of the tip to take up the wear incidental to its use and to prevent displacement of the tip.
Another object is to construct thetip-holder of separable parts .or sections which are read. ily held in operative position and are adapted to be readily detached for permitting the adjustment of the tip above referred to.
A further object is to provide an adjustable abutment for the end of the cue-handle which is attached to the tip-holder for the purpose of relieving the strain due to the impact of the tip against the ball; and a still further object is to construct the tip in separable parts which are locked from independent rotary movement and are adjustable endwise in the end of the tip-holder.
To this end the invention consists in the combination; construction, and arrangements of theparts of atip-holder, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of my improved tip-holder and the adjacent portion of the handle of the cue secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the various parts of my improved tip-holder in perspective detached onefrom the other.
It is well known that in the ordinary construction of tip-holdcrs no suitable provision is made for permanently securing the tip in position or for taking up the wear incidental to its use, the usual means of securement being to cement the tip to the end of the cuehandle or tofixedly attachjthe tip in some other manner in which the whole of the tip is exposed and is more or less liable to become displaced or otherwise impaired, thus necessi- Serial No. 111,930. My invention is designed to overcome these difficulties by inclosing the major portion of the tip ina suitable sleeve or ferrule in such manner as to permit its lengthwise adjustment relatively to the tip-holder, and in carrying out the object of my invention I pro- Vide a holder 1 and a tip 2, the holder 1 being composed of separable tubular sections 3 and 4, a coupling 5, and the tip 2 usually consists of inner and outer sections 6 and 7. The tubular sections 3 and L are preferably threaded interiorly throughout their entire length and are arranged end to end and held in this position by the coupling 5, which is threaded exteriorly to engage the interior threads of the sections 3 and 4 and is adjustable endwise relatively to such sections. The section 3 is open at both ends, one end being adapted to receive a reduced threaded end 7 of the we handle 8, and the coupling 5 is adjustable in theother end and provided with an abutment 9, adapted to engage the inner end face of the threaded portion 7 for relieving the strain upon the tip-holder due to the impact of the tip against the ball and at the same time locking the section 3 in operative position and forming a support for the section t.
By reducing the end of the cue-handle 8 a suitable annular shoulder 10 is formed which firmly abuts against the end face of the section 3, which additionally stiffens the connection between the cue-handle and the tip-hold er, the distance between the'shoulder 10 and the end of the threaded portion 7 being less than the length of the section 3, so as to permit the firm gripping of the coupling 5 with said section 3 and to afford a suitable threaded socket for receiving the coupling 5.
After the cue-handle has been inserted in the end of the section 3 with the shoulder 10 abutting against the outer end of the said section the coupling 5 is adjusted lengthwise by rotation until this abutting face 9 engages the end face ofv the portion 7, which engagement serves to lock the cue-handle 8 and also the coupling 5 from rotary movement, one serving as a lock-nut for the other, the coupling 5 extending through and beyond the open end of the section 3 to receive the section 4. This coupling 5 is usually provided with a transverse slot in its outer end for receiving a suitable tool, as a screw-driver, whereby when the section 4 is removed the longitudinal adjustment of the coupling, as just described, may be effected.
Prior to the mounting of the sleeve or section 4 upon the projecting end of the coupling 5 the tip 2 is adjusted by screwing the same through the section 4 to give the proper pro jection of the section 7. This tip, as previously stated, consists of sections 6 and 7, the section 6 being preferably formed of metal threaded exteriorly and engages with the interior threads of the section 4 and is usually provided with projecting spurs 12, which enter suitable sockets 13 in the adjacent end face of the section 7 for locking the two sections from independent rotary movement when the tip is being adjusted. The section 7 is usually formed of leather or any other suitable material and isdetachably locked to the section 6 by the spurs 12 entering the apertures 13, this section 7 being also threaded exteriorly to engage the internal threads of section f, and owing to the fact that the two sections 6 and 7 are rotated simultaneously both are adjusted endwise within the section 4. This adjustment permits more or less exposure of the leather or equivalent tip, as may be desired, and is readily effected by removing the section 4t from the adjacent end of the coupling 5 and then inserting a suitable tool, as a screw-driver, into the open end of the section 4, which engages with the slot or other tool-engaging member provided on the end face of the section 6, whereby the parts 6 and 7 are rotated and adjusted to the desired position.
it is evident from the foregoing description that one of the essential features of my invention is to partially inclose a portion of the outer tip-section by a suitable metallic or equivalent nipple or sleeve for the purpose of protecting the tip proper and preventing an possibility of displacement, another importantfeaturebeing the longitudinal adjustment of the tip and also the adjustable abutment 5 for the end of the cue-handle, these constituting the essential features of my invention, and
it is apparent that some change may be made in the detail construction and arrangemem'. of
the parts without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having described my invention, what vl claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. A tip-holder for cues comprising hollow sections detachably secured end to end, an adjustable abutment in one section and connected to the other section, and a tip adjustably secured in the other section.
2. A tip-holder comprising two hollow see- 5 tions threaded interiorly from end to end, a threaded coupling screwed into the meeting ends of said sections and having an abutting face for the cue-handle, and a tip composed of separable parts, one part being threaded, and 7 engaging the interior threads of the adjacent hollow section, and means for locking the parts from independent rotation.
3. A cue-tip holder comprising tubular sections arranged end to end and threaded interiorly from end to end, a threaded connection engaged with the threads of said sections and removable therefrom, and a tip composed of separable parts of different material locked to rotate together, one part being threaded and 30 engaged with the threads of one of the tubular sections.
