PATENT OFFICE.
SHOE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,819, dated June '7, 1904.
Application filedlMarch 27, 1903;.
' Be it known that I, OWEN GLENDOWERT :GATES, a citizen of the Uni ted States, residing at 5 Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and E State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Shoe-Holders;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the This invention relates to devices for sup-j porting articles of personal wear, and par-.1 ticularly to such devices for holding shoes, slippers, and similar articles while the same are being polished or shined; and some of thej objects of this invention are to provide'a sim-i ple, cheap, and eflicient device of this'char; acter.
Another object of the invention is to provide such "a device so constructed as to be readily disconnected from the surface upon which the same is secured and constructed'to be disconnected or taken apart for transportation or when not in use.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed as to be readily adjustable according to the size of the shoe with which the device is used.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as more fully described in the following specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of one form of the device, illustrating the parts assembled. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the toe portion or last, illustrating the spring broken away above the connection thereof with said portion. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail rear elevational view of the same. Fig. a is a detail perspective view of the bracket and heel portion, a portion of the spring being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is an elevational view, partly in section, showing a modified form of the construction hereinbefore shown wherein a diagonal spring is em- Serial No. P1918701 (N0 model.) i i f ployed. Fig. 6 is an elevational view of still another construction wherein a coiled-spring is used. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the toe portion or last, showing a part of the spring. Fig. 8 is an enlarged rear elevational view of the toe portion, also showing part of the spring. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the spring, on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 10 is a detail view of a bracket constructed to receive a spring, as illustrated in Fig. 9.
to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to.
4 thereof, the reference character 1 designates a last or toe portion, which may be of any suitable formation and size and in which there is preferably constructed a groove or channel 2, tapering or inclined at 3 to permit the movement of the toe portion in relation to the spring 6 when the same are connected, substantially as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in order to permit of the Withdrawal or removal of the shoe or other article from the holder, as well as the placing of the same thereon, as will be readily understood. Ascrew or similar device 4 is secured within the groove or channel 2 to engage or enter an opening 5 in the spring 6, by means of which construction the spring can be readily detached or disconnected from the last for transportation or when not in use.
. An attaching-plate 7 is provided with jaws or lugs 8, constructed to engage a T-shaped end 9 of a bracket 10, having recesses or openings 11 to receive removably the other end of the spring 6, it being understood that any number of openings 11 may be provided to adapt the holder for use with articles of different sizes or to make the holder adjustable, and formed on or connected with the bracket 10 is a heelpiece 12 of any suitable size Orshape. When it is desired to clean an article or shoe, the same is slipped upon the last 1 and the same is tilted or elevated into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, whereupon the last is forced toward the heel-piece 12 and the latter enters the heel of the article, and the parts are then released, so that the spring will hold the article securely in position while it is being cleaned or shined in the usual manner.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings substantially the same construction is employed, with the exception that an inclined spring 13 is removably secured to the last 1 and the heel-piece 12; but the operation of the device is the same as that herein described.
Adverting to Figs. 6 to 10, inclusive, there is illustrated a double coiled spring 14:, carrying a web or plate 15, in which is formed an opening 5 to removably receive the screw 4 upon the last 1, as before explained; but the free ends 16 of the spring removably enter openings 17in the bracket 10, substantially as the hat spring 6, before referred to. With the exception of the formation of the spring 14 the construction and operation of the device illustrated in Figs. 6 to 10 of the drawings is the same as that before described, and further explanation thereof will not be required.
By means of this construction a simple, cheap, and efficient device is provided, which is constructed to readily receive and retain the shoe or other article and to rigidly support the same during the operation of cleaning or polishing it.
It is not desired to confine this invention to the specific construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and the right is reserved to make all such changes in and modifications of the same rying a heel portion, a toe portion and a A.
spring connected directly with said bracket and toe portion.
3. A holder provided. with an attachingplate, a bracket removably connected therewith and carrying a heel portion, a toe portion and a spring removably and adjnstahly connecting said bracket and toe portion.
4:. A holder provided with an attachingplate, carrying lugs or cars, a bracket having a T-shaped end to engage said lugs rcniovahlv and carrying a heel portion, a toe portion having a channel and an engaging device and a spring constructed to removably engage said device within said channel and to removahly enter said bracket.
In testimony whereof .I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, at, Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angcles, State of California, this 3d day of March, 1903.
