PATENT OFFICE.
WAGON-BODY LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,815, dated June '7, 1904.
Application filed Angusi 1, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
to thefigures of reference'marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to wagon-bodylifters, if
and has for its object to provide a device of this class which isso constructed that a man single handed can put on or off a wagon-body.
My invention is particularly adapted to put on or take off the running-gear. of awagon the usual hay-racks employed by farmers for carrying hay.
As is of courseunderstood, wagons used in husbandry usually have two or more bodies, one, ordinarily termed a hay-rack, for carrying hay, while the others are, used for other purposes. To put on the running-gear or take ofi one of these bodies is quite a task, and it is for the purpose of facilitating this operation that I have made my present invention, which consists in novel raising means and in the construction employed for han-' dling and moving the wagon-body horizontally on or oil? the running-gear.
My invention also consists in certain other novel features of construction and in combination of parts, which will be first fullydescribed and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front perspective'of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the supporting-arms, showingracks and pinions. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 .4 of Fig. 3.
Like numeralsof reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, in
- which 1 is a wagon-body lifter composed of the two horizontal frame-p1eces 2,wh1ch rest upon the ground. Secured upon sa1d pieces is the sprocket-wheel on said shaft.
- wheel 21.
Serial No. 167,953. (No model.)
base-plate 3, upon which is secured the lower frame-piece 4, to which are securely fastened the upright standards 5. Supporting sa1d standards are the supports 6, and 7 indicates the upper cross-piece connecting said standards and bracing the same.
8 indicates the verticallyanovable rack-bars, which are carried and guided between each pair of the upright standards 5, said vertically-movable rack-bars being provided with horizontall y' -extending forward ari'nsiorprojections 9, having a groove 10 therein, and said upright standards 5 are provided with an opening 11 in line with said groove, through which the horizontally-movable supportingarms 12 pass. Secured to said horizontallyextending forward arms 9 are vertically-movable rack-bars l3, housed in casings-14., extending into the ground.
Referring particularly to Fig. 2, 14. indicates a shaft -carrying a series of pinions 15, which mesh with the vertically-movable rack bars 8, Fig. 3, and which carries a sprocket wheel 16.
In Fig. 1, 17 indicates a shaft carrying a series of pinions 18, which mesh with the vertical rack-bars 13, Fig. 3, and19 indicates a A chain- 20 connects said sprocket with the sprocket 16 on shaft 1 1, and a large fly-wheel 21 is secured on the shaft 17, said wheel having a handle 22 and a series of radially-extending pins 23 around the periphery of said wheel.
A longitudinally-movable sliding brake-bar 24:, secured in straps 25, is utilized as a brake or in order to lock the machine by sliding said rod into engagement with the pins 23 of the (Dotted lines, Fig. 2.)
Referring now to Fig. 1, 26 indicates a shaft carrying a series of sprockets 27, which mesh with the racks on the horizontally-movable supporting-arms 12, and I provide a crank or handle 27 on the end thereof to revolve'said shaft.
Having thus set forth the several parts of my invention, its operation is as follows: The device is placed, as shown, with the casings 14, wedge-pieces 28, and pins 29 extending into the ground. hen it is desired to raise a wagon-body off the running-gear, the wheel 21 is revolved, which turns the shafts 17 and 14: and pinions l8 and 15, which engage the rack-bars 8 and 13 to lower the same, which also lowers the horizontally-movable supporting-arms 9. When said arms have been low ered to a point under the wagon-body, the crank or handle 27 is turned, which revolves the shaft 26 and pinions 27, in engagement with the said arms, moving the same horizontally under the Wagon-body. When said arms are well under the body of the Wagon, so as to properly support the same, the wheel 21 is again turned, so as to raise the rack-bars 8 and 13 and raise the supporting-arms carrying the wagon-body up off the running-gear. When said body has been raised clear off the running-gear, the brake-rod 2 f is slid into engagement with the pins 23 of the wheel 21, thus locking the machine carrying the wagonbody. The running-gear is then moved from under the wagon-body, which may be left in its raised position and replaced upon the running-gear whenever again required.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not wish to be understood as limitingmyself to the exact construction herein set forth, as various slight changes may be made therein by those skilled in the art, which would fall within the limit and scope of my invention, and 1 consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a wagon-body lifter, the combination of suitable framework, vertical rack-bars, forwardly-extending arms thereon, horizontallymovable su mortingarms carried by said forwardlyextending arms, shafts and pinions carried thereby to mesh with said rack-bars and horizontally movable supporting arms and means for moving the same substantially as described.
2. In a wagon-body lifter, the combina-ti m of suitable framework, vertical rack-bars,hori zontally-movable supporting-arms carried by said vertical rack-bars, and meansfor raising and lowering said rack-bars, and independent means for moving said snpporting-arnis.
3. In a wagon-body lifter, the combination U of suitable framework, a series of vertical movable bars, horizontally-1novable supporting-arms adapted to be raised or lowered by said vertically-movable bars, and means for moving said supporting-arms independent of the movement of said vertical bars.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
