TARGET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,784, dated June '7, 1904. I Application filed October 30, 1903. Serial No. 179.157. (N0 model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. QUAoKEN- BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Herkimer, in thecounty of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Targets, of which the following is a specification.
My'present invention pertains to targets, the construction and advantages of which will be hereinafter set forth, reference-being had to the annexed drawings, 'wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the target;

4 The primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficientdevice for effacing the marks made by a bullet upon the face of a target, which device may be operated at a distance from the target.
A further object is to provide means which will efiectually protect the effacing-roller and the paint or liquid receptacle from foreign I matter and from injury by spent bullets. 35
Broadly stated, the invention comprisesa target, a liquid-receptacle located at the base thereof, an effacing-roller or its equivalent, means for passing'said roller over the face of the target, and a cover which when the roller is in the receptacle will fully close the latter, the cover in no manner interfering with the action of the roller nor affecting the work of effacement accomplished thereby. v A i Referring to the drawings, A denotes the bodyof the target provided with concentric markings, the bulls-eye A, and alarm A as usual. Located at the lower portion of the target and preferably secured thereto by screws B or their equivalent is a paint or liquid containing trough or receptacle C, said edge rests upon the front portion of the receptacle, while the upper edge bears against theface of the target when said cover is in its closed position. The upper face of the cover, as will be noted, is given a downward and outward inclinatiomso that any matters such as spent bullets, fragments thereof, or any extraneous substancewill tend to pass off the cover.
Attached to each end of the cover'E is an end piece or closure F, said pieces being of sufiicient depth to extend past the upper edge of theends of the paint-receptacle, thereby effectually closingsaid receptacle when the cover is lowered. The end pieces also form a support for an axle or pintles G, upon which is mounted a roller H, the pintles passing down into the recesses D when the cover is closed. Said end pieces are extended rearwardly of the body of the target, and a bail or loop-I has its laterally-bent ends J passed into openings formed in said rearward extensions. Rolls K, mounted upon' said ends J, bear against the rear face of the body of the target. A cord or any other suitable means which can be operated from a point remote from the target may be connected to the bail for elevating the same and with it the roller and closure, though of course the bail may be operated directly by hand if it should be found desirable so to do.
A forwardly-projecting stop L is secured to,
the upper end of the body and serves to arrest the cover, and consequently the parts attached thereto, when the same has been ele vated sufficiently to cause the-roller to pass entirely over theface of the target.
The operation of the deviceis as follows: Assuming that the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. i, wherein it will be notedthat the rolls K bear against the rear face of the target, while the roller H stands slightly away from the forward face thereof, the attendant 0r marksman elevates the bail I. The slightest upward movement thereof causes the cover E, with the roller H, to swing about the ends J of the bail as a pivot, thereby causing the roller H to come into contact with the face of the target and the upper inner edge of the cover to swing away therefrom, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 5. In other words, the cover will tend to swing down about the bail ends J as a pivotal point, the swinging movement being limited only by the contact of the roller H with the face of the target. of the parts will be maintained throughout the course of travel of the roller up and down the face of the target, and not until the cover comes into contact with the upper edge of the receptacle will its upper edge close against the target and the roller be removed from contact therewith.
It is of course immaterial whether the particular form of cover shown be employed or Whether the exact pivotal connection thereof to the elevating-bail be used when the invention is considered in its broadest sense. So long as the gravitating cover and roller-carrier is present and acts in the manner peeified the structure may be held to fall within the scope of my invention. Any automatically-operated cover acting in conjunction with a painting or effacing device I deem likewise to be embraced by my invention.
It will be noted that by the employment of a bail or loop no part of the roller-operating mechanism interferes with the bulls eye, alarm, or any figure which may be employed in connection with said bulls-eye.
As will be most clearly seen upon reference to Fig. 3, the depending arms of the bail are located near the outer edges of the target and are thus free from conflict with the springarm which carries the bulls-eye and alarm. Furthermore, by reason of the fact that the elevating-string or the like is attached to the central portion of the cross member of the bail and is at a considerable distance above the roller and the cover attached to the lower end of the hail the parts will maintain a hori- Zontal position when elevated by the string, no equalizing device being necessary to insure that both ends of the cover and roller are moved up the same distance.
It will of course be understood that the rolls may be omitted from the ends of the bail and the device still be successfully operated. Their presence, however, is preferable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining trough or receptacle located adjacent thereto; an effacing device normally occupying a position within said receptacle; means for elevating and lowering said device, thus causing it to pass over the face of the This position target; and a closure, which when the ell'acing device is within the receptacle automatically closes the same.
2. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining trough or receptacle located adjacent thereto; an eflacing device normally occupying a position within said receptacle; a closure for said receptacle; and means for raising and lowering said efl'acing device and closure, whereby the latter will effectually protect the receptacle and the efl'acing device therein when the parts are lowered.
3. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining trough or receptacle located adjacent thereto in line with its face; a cover for said receptacle; an eii'acing device'em-ried by said cover; and means for raising and lowering the cover and eflacing device, causing the cover to move away from the face of the target as the effacing device comes into contact therewith.
4. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining trough or receptacle in line with the face thereof; a gravitating cover for said receptacle; an cfl'acing device carried by said cover; and means for elevating the cover, permitting it to swing away from the face of the target and the efl'acing device to come into contact with said face, substantially as de scribed.
5. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining trough or receptacle in line with the face thereof; a cover for said receptacle, said cover having members extending rearwardly of the target; an efl'acing device carried by said cover; and means connected to said rearwardly-extending members for elevating and lowering the cover and eliacing device.
6. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining trough or receptacle located in line with the face thereof; a cover for said receptacle, said cover when closed resting at its forward edge upon the receptacle and inclining upwardly toward and bearing against the face of the target; an efl'acing device carried by the cover; members extending rearwardly from the cover; means for holding the cover against forward movement; and means pivotally connected to said rearward extensions for elevating and lowering the cover and effacing device.
7. In combination with a target; a liquidcontainingreceptacle in line with the for ard face thereof; a cover normally closing over said receptacle and bearing against the face of the target; an eifacing device carried by said cover; members extending from said cover rearwardly of the target; means connected to said members for elevating said cover; and rolls bearing upon the rear face of the target and preventing a forward movement of the cover.
8. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining receptacle in line with the forward face thereof; a cover normally closing-said receptacle and bearing against the face of the target, the upper face of said cover being inclined away from the face of the target; end pieces secured to the cover, said pieces extending rearwardly of the target; a roller carried by said end pieces and normally occupying a position in the trough when the cover is lowered; a bail, the ends of which are bent laterally and pass through openings formed in said rearwardlyextending end pieces; and rolls mounted upon said lateral extensions of the bail, Said rolls bearing upon the rear face of the target, substantially as described.
9. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining receptacle located adjacent thereto; a cover for said receptacle; an effacing device carried by said cover; and means for tilting and elevating the cover, whereby it will be drawn out of contact with the face of the tar get and the effacing device moved into contact therewith, substantially as described.
10. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining receptacle located adjacent thereto; a cover for said receptacle; an efiacing-roller carried by said cover, said roller occupying a position within the receptacle when the cover is closed; rolls connected to the cover and bearing upon the rear face of the target; and means for elevating and tilting said cover, whereby it will be thrown out of contact with the forward face of the target and the roller moved into contact therewith, substantially as described.
11. In combination with a target; a liquidcontaining receptacle in line with the forward face thereof; a cover for said receptacle having its upper face inclined away from the face of the target; an effacing device; and means for elevating the effacing device and throwingthe cover out of contact with the face of the target, substantially as described.
12. In combination with the body of a target; atrough or receptacle located at the lower portion thereof; an eifaeing device; a bail or loop located in rear of the target; pivotal connections intermediate the ends of said bail or loop and the effacing device whereby the effacing device will swing into contact with the face of the target when the bail is elevated; and a bulls-eye located in rear of the target intermediate the downwardly-extending mem' bers of the loop but free from contact there-' with, substantially as described.
13. In combination with a target; a trough or receptacle; an effacing device normally occupying a position therein; a bail located in rear of said target, the vertically-disposed members of said bail standing adjacent to the outer edges of the target and having their lower ends bent laterally; connections inter mediate said ends and the effacing device; and a bulls-eye carried in rear of the target intererally-bent ends of the bail, said rolls bearing upon the rear face of the target; and connections intermediate said laterally-extending ends and the efl'acing device, substantially as described.
15. In combination with a target; aneifacing device; a bail located in rear of the target, the upper end of said bail oceupyinga position adjacent to the upper end of the target when the parts are in their normal positions; rolls mounted upon the laterally-bent ends of the bail, said rolls bearing upon the rear face of the target; and connections intermediate said laterally-extending ends and the eifacing device, substantially as described.
16. In combination with a target, a trough or receptacle adjacent to the face thereof; an effacing device normally positioned in said receptacle; and a bail located in rear of the target, the ends of said bail being pivotally con nected to the effacing device and serving to hold the effacing device against the face of the target, substantially as described.
'17. In combination with a target, a trough or receptacle adjacent to the face thereof; an eifacing device normally positioned in said receptacle; and a-bail located in rear of the target, the upper portion of the bail standing normally at or near the upper end of the target, the downwardly-extending arms thereof being located adjacent to the sides of the target, and the ends'of the bail beingpivotally connected to the-eifacing device and serving to hold the eifacing device against the face of the target, substantially as described.
18. In combination with a target, a liquidreceptacle located at the lower portion thereof and'in line with its front face; an efiacingroller located therein and normally out of contact with the target; a frame pivotally connected to the roller extending rearwardly of the target; and means, pivotally connected to the frame in rear of the target, whereby when said frame is elevated the roller will be brought into contact with the face of the target, substantially as described.
