EXPLOSION-MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.' 761,656, dated June 7, 1904.
` Application filed March 3, 1903. Serial No. 145,970. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FERDINAND CHARBON and LoNcE GIEARDOT, citizens or the Republic of France, and residents of 7 Rue Ampere, Puteaux, Seine, in the Republic oi' France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Explosion-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in explosion-motors, petrol-motors, and the like for the purpose of producing motors of great lightness, constructed entirely of steel, and easy to mount and to inspect.
The improvements relate more particularly to theconstruction and arrangement of the cylinder and the valve-boxes, to the mounting of the said boxes and their closing-plugs, and to the means of fixing to the various parts of the motor a thin metal casing or jacket intended to form a Water-chamber.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a vertical section of the motor in a plane passing th rough the valve-boxes. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an elevation; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent, on a smaller scale, an elevation, a plan view, and a vertical section, respectively, of the motor-cylinder, the vertical section being on the line l 2 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of the closing device of the valve-boxes at an enlarged scale, and Fig. 8 is a section made through line A B of Fig. 7
The cylinder is'formed of a bored and polished block of cannon-steel, so that the walls can be of very slight thickness, owing to the strength of the metal. The cylinder can also be made of-cast-steel. This cylinder tis only open at the base and is provided at the latter with aflange for iixing it to an ordinary frame b. At its upper-end it has a cover c, integral with the lateral walls, and two cylindrical bosses d and e, diametrically opposite .each other,with screw-threaded outer surfaces. In order to utilize to the fullest possible extent the total height of the cylinder and to avoid `useless weight,'the cover c has a semicylinof the cylinder.

For this purpose acollarvz, with two projecting knob-headed studs 0 and p, is adapted to be screwed ixedly to the flange surrounding the aperture m. A cross-bar g is connected by a screw r at its center with the cover or plug c, as shown in Fig. 1. The ends of the crossbar g are adapted to engage the studs 0 and p, respectively. 'The casing which surrounds the cylinder and the valve-boxesand in which the coolingwater circulates consists of a copper jacket xed at its lower end directly to the circumference of the cylinder and at its upper end to the valve-boxes. This jacket is preferably T-shaped and arranged with its vertical part surrounding the body of the cylinder and its horizontal part u surrounding the upper end of the cylinder-bottom and the valveleoxes. The part uis not cylindrical, but has a flattened upper surface. This jacket u is provided with openings for'the valves and valve-rods and the like and is soldered or otherwise fixed to the cylinder and the valveboxes at the parts marked s in Figs. l and 2. l The two valves .fc and y for supply and exhaust, respectively, are automatically operl ated by cams 1 and 2, fixed at an angle of one hundred and eighty degrees to each other to parallel shafts 3 and 4, respectively. The said shafts 3 and 4 revolve with equal speed and are driven by the main shaft 5 by means of gear-wheels. The rods 7 and 8, which the said cams operate, have rollers 9 and 10 at their lower ends and are guided in vertical tubes, as shown in the drawings.
In using this type of motor with motor-cars several coupled cylinders will preferably be employed, more particularly four cylinders placed in line, with their pistons acting on the same shaft. The cam-shafts will in this case be common to all the cylinders, and a common feed and exhaust pipe will be provided.

An explosion-motor,comprising a hollow steel cylinder@ open at one end, two hollow lateral screw-threaded bosses (Z e at its upper end, the said bosses being diametrieally opposite each other and integral with the cylinder, and a flange g at the end of each of the said bosses, in combination with two caststeel valve-boxes identical with each other, a hollow screw-thread ed bossfcast with each Valvebox adapted to be screwed to one of the bosses d and e of the cylinder, a recess 71, in each of the bosses f, and an aperture in the wall of each of the said valve-boxes, opposite the respective boss f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. j

An explosion-motor comprising a hollow steel cylinder (t open at one end, two hollow lateral screw-thread ed bosses Z a diametrically opposite each other at the upper end of the cylinder and integral with the latter, and a iange f7 at the end of each of the said bosses e and (l, in combination with two cast-steel valve-boxes identical with each other, a screwthreaded tubular boss f on each of the said Valve-boxes adapted to be screwed tothe cor responding boss of the cylinder, a recess /1/ in each of the bosses f, an aperture in the wall of each of the said valve-boxes opposite the respective boss f, an aperture m in the upper part of each of the said valve-boxes, a collar n adapted to bc screwed to a flange surrounding the said aperture 7n, two knoh-hemled studs 0 and 7) lixed to the said collar n, acrossbar r] with slotted ends adapted to engage the saidA studs in opposite directions, a xingscrew r engaging the said cross-har r] and a plug o connected to the screw fr, substantially as and lfor the purpose set forth.
