PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL M. CURWEN, OF VILLANOVA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN A. BRILL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,628, dated. May 31, 1904.
Original application filed August 21, 1903, Serial No. 170,258. Divided and this application filed November 24, 1903. Serial 'No.182,465. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. CURwEma citizen of the United States, and a resident of Villanova, county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cars, of which the followin'gis a specification.
This application is a division of application Serial No. 17 0,258, dated August 21, 1903.
The object of my invention is to provide a car which will be more simple, durable, and economical than those heretofore made, and this I accomplish by reinforcing a side sill which is made of. a commercial form of angleiron in a manner hereinafter set forth.
For a more particular description of one embodiment of my invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which-' Figure 1 is a perspective and sectional view of a portion of a frame provided with my im-' provements.
Fig. 2 is a section of the same,
, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Throughout both views similar reference characters designate similar parts.
A car-frame embodying my improvements is provided with a Z-iron sill 1, with a vertical intermediate web 2, and outwardly and horizontally disposed lower web 3, and an inwardly and horizontally disposed web 4. The web 4: extends far enough to support both the truss-plank 5 and the flooring 6, as will hereinafter appear. The truss-plank 5 is secured near the outer edge of the upper surface of the flange 1 by bolts 7, which fixes this plank to the sill 1, and it is further secured by stanchions 8, which are bolted by bolts 9 and 10 to the sill 1 and truss-plank 5, respectively. The lower ends of the stanchions rest on the upper surface of the web 3, and these stanchions are provided with the usual sash-- grooves 11, that are customary in such structures. Planks 12 and 13 are sunk into the outer edges of the stanchions 8, so that the outer surfaces of these planks and stanchions will be flush, so that the sheathing 14 may be secured in the usual way. Base-boards 15, with the recesses 16 resting on the truss-plank 5, are secured to the stanchions 8. The recesses 16 permit the bolts 7 to be manipulated. The end of the flooring 6 rests on the flange 4 and abuts against the plank 5, where it is secured in any suitable way.
The stanchions 8, sheathing 14:, sill 1, trussboard 5, and base-board form sash-pockets into which the sash-may be lowered.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a car or similar vehicle, aside sill, consisting of a Z-iron with a vertical intermediate web, horizontally disposed upper and lower webs, the upper web projecting inwardly, and the lower web projecting outwardly, a truss plank fixed to said sill and stanchions fixed to both the sill and truss-plank.
2. In a car or similar device, a Z-iron sill with an intermediate verticalweb, horizontally-disposed upper and lower webs, the upper web being inwardly disposed, and the lower web being outwardly disposed, a trussplank fixed to said sill, and stanchions fixed to said sill and truss-plank, and a flooring resting on said upper horizontal web. 3. In a car-frame or similar device, a Z-iron sill with an intermediate vertical web, horizontally-disposed upper and lower webs, a trussplank secured to said sill, stanchions secured to the exterior of said sill and truss-plank, and a flooring resting on said upper horizontal web.
Signed in the city and county of Philadel- November, 1903.
