ton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves or Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in valves or faucets, such as are adapted for controllIng the iiow of iiuids through passages; and the object of the invention is to lprovide a'device of this character with auxill' iary means for controlling the flow of iiuid independently of the control exercised through the medium of the main valve, so that the vescape of iuid past the main valve is prevented Vwhen said main valve Is removed for repairs. The auxlliarycontrolhng' means also permitsv of regulating the pressure of theiuid in iowing past the main valve, so that damage due to sudden vchecking of the* flow at the main valve is prevented.
The invention consistsvin certain novel features ofthe construction, combination, and ar rangement of the several parts of the improved l valve or faucet whereby certain important vadvantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be Y hereina'fter fully set forth.
The novel features of the inventionwill be carefully defined in the claim.

As shown in these views, the improved valve or faucet 'embodying myimprovements is provided with a casing or body portion 1, having at one side ascrew-threaded extension 2 projecting 'fromit and adapted for connection witha service-pipe,(not shown,)said extension 2 being formed with a bore or passage 3, through which the fluid is adapted to flow from said service-pipe into the hollow interior or chamberof the main or body portion of the valve or faucet easing 1. seat is indicated at 11 and is made in raised annular formwithinthe upper compartment 6 and upon the upper surface of the partition and is also concentric with respect to the port 7 in said partition.
The casing 1 of the valve or faucet is. provided at its upper part with an upwardly-extended boss or extension 12,1.the interior of which is in communication with the upper `compartment 6 in the casing and the external wall of which is screw-threaded to receive a screw-cap 13, between which andv the upper edge of said boss vor extension 12 is held a gasket or packing-ring 14, of rubber or other suitable material. The lower interiorly-screwthreaded portion of the cap 13 is made in hexagonal form, so as to be capable of ready removal by means of a wrench or other tool, and said cap is provided with a reduced and interiorly-screw-threaded neck 15 at its upper part, within`which is arranged to screw a valve-stem 16, havingscrew-threads for engagement in said interior screw -threads of the neck 15, as .shownat 17,.and also provided at its lower end ywith a head or enlargement 18, held upon it, which head or enlargement carries a flat valve 19, of rubber or other suitable substance, adapted when the valve-stem 16 is turned to be moved toward and away from the upper raised valve-seat 11, the stem '16 being axially alined above the port 11, so
that the valve 19 may fit snugly upon said seat l1 when the stem is screwed down into the casing. The stem 16 is provided at its upper end with a handle 20 of any preferred kind, and in order to prevent the escape or leakage of fluid around the stem in case the screw-threads thereof should not properly correspond with those ot' the neck 15 I provide said neck 15 with exterior' screw-threads whereon is engaged an auxiliary cap 2l, adapted to hold a packing 22 to produce a tight joint around the upper part of the valvestem 16.
The lower part of the casing 1 of the valve or faucet is also provided with a downwardlyextended nipple or boss 24, which is exteriorly screwethreaded to receive a screw-cap 25, within which is held a packing-ring or gasket 26 for producing a tight joint at the lower edge of said nipple or boss.v TheI nipple or boss 24 is also provided with interior screw-threads, with which is engaged ascrewthreaded A part 27, produced upon a lower auxiliary-valve stem 28, the upper end ofl which carries a cone-shaped valve 29, adapted to fit the valve-seat 10 upon the under side of partition 4 and within the lower compartment 5 of the easing, the' lower end of said stem 28 being extended ,through the screw-cap 25 and having a handle 30 of any desired kind below the same.
The lower or auxiliary valve 29 and its valve-stem 28 are arranged in axial alinement with the upper or main valve 20 and its valvestem 16, and 'the construction is such that either of said valves may by turning movement ot 1ts valve-stem be adjusted nearer to or farther from its valve-seat or may be pressed closely upon its valve-seat, so that either vone of said valves may for controlling the liow of iiuid port 7. i
The valve-stem 28 of the lower or auxiliary valve 29 is formed at its junction with the enlarged screw-threaded part 27 with a gradually enlarged or tapered portion 31, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and on the said. valve-stem 28 below said tapered portion is held an annular packing-ring or annulus 32, which when the valve 29 is drawn downward by turning movement which causes the part 27 to traverse the screw-threads in the nipple or boss 24 is clamped between said enlarged screw-threaded part 27 and the packing 26 at the base of the screwcap 25, the expanded or tapered portion be employed through the 31 of the valve-stem being' at the same time pressed into close contact with the central opening in said packing-ring 32 in such a way as to produce a tight joint and prevent leakage at the base of the casing. 1n this way it will be seen that by drawing the auxiliary valve down tightly to compress the packing below it leakage at that point may be eli'ectually prevented, so that repairs of the auxiliary valve are not required.
In the use ot' the improved valve or laucet constructed according to my invention the upper or main valve 20 is normally employed for controlling the flow of liuid through the passages from the service-pipe, the lower or auxiliary valve 29 being left normally open; but when it is necessary to repair the upper or main valve, or in case said main valve should become so worn in use as to permit escape ot' lluid past it, the lower or auxiliary valve 29 is operated and b v engagement upon its seat 10 serves to effectually cut oli' the flow of liquid through the passages. When the lower or auxiliary Valve 29 is in closed position, the fiow of li uid through the valve or faucet being completely cut oil' thereby, the removal olf' the main valve and its stem by the unscrewing of the cap 13 is permitted, so that ready access may be had to all of the parts above the partition 4 for purposes of repair.
seldom used, it will be evident that there will be but little wear upon it, so that it will not require repairing except in case oil accident or after long service. Said lower or auxiliary valve is also capable of use for regulating the pressure with which the liquid may escape through the port 7 in partition 4, since it can be adjusted to stand more or less closely adjacent to its seat 10, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In this way the strains exerted by the Huid upon being suddenly checked at the main valve may be regulated, so that damage to the parts may be avoided. It will also be seen that when the auxiliary valve is screwed down tightly away from its seat it will act to clamp the packing held upon its stem in such a way as to effectively prevent leakage at this point even after the parts shall have been considerably worn. In this way repair otl the auxiliary valve is avoided and a material advantage is thereby attained, since to repair said auxiliary valve would necessitate shutting oif the water-supply to the service-pipe with which the valve or faucet is connected.
The improved valve or faucet constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple and inexpensive construction and is very light, strong, and durable, and by its use permits a considerable economy, since it permits of dispensing with the extra cock or valve commonly provided in the service-pipe, and also obviates the use of extra joints, such as are required for connecting such extra cock IOO IIO
or valve in the service-pipe, lthe cost of such extra cock and joints, together with the labor involved in putting them in position, being greatly in excess of the increased cost of the valve or faucet provided with my improvements. Moreover, the auxiliary Valve in my improved construction is always ready and in convenient position for use, so that the anrily provided, and when so used the auxiliary valve may be turned to closed position Vwhen it is desired to repair the main valve, so that wasting of the watercontain'ed in'the boiler and loss of time and annoyance occasioned in refilling said boiler are` avoided.
From Vthe above description it will be seen that the invention is not limited in its application to valves or faucets constructed with discharge-nozzles, but may as well be used in connection with valves or cocks of other constructions, and for this reason I do no t wish to be understood as limiting myself to the employment of my improvements in connection with discharge-faucets alone.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the type set forth comprising a casing having a partition dividing the same into upper and lower compartments, said partition being formed with a part surrounded on the upper and lower faces respectively of the partition with valve-seats, an internallythreaded nipple formed integral with the under side of the casing and being in communication with the lower compartment and having an interior of less diameter than that of the said lower compartment, a valve operating in the upper compartment and being adapted to engage the upper valve-seat, a stem projectingv through said nipple and having an enlarged portion threaded and engaging the threaded interior of said nipple, a valve on the inner end of said stem.l said valve being of less diameter than the enlarged portion of said stem, a cap on the lower end of said nipple, a gasket arranged in said cap and engaging the lower end of the nipple, and a second gasket superimposed on said rst-named gasket and being arranged in said nipple, said stem from its enlarged portion being gradually reduced in diameter whereby an inclined portion which is arranged -in said last-named gasket is provided, said inclined portion of said stem being located at the upper face of the second-named gasket, so as'to compress the latter inte the opening of the first-named gasket when the Valve is in its lowermost position, said second-named gasket on its lower face adjacent the stem having a tapered portion snugly embracing the stem, substantially as and for the purposespeciiied.
