UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
SIDNEY H. SHORT, OF. LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIG-NOR TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING O SAFETY APPARATUS FOR USE ON RAILWAY-CARS- SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,417, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed February 11, 1902. Serial No. 93,516. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY H. SHORT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Apparatus for Use on Railway-Oars, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates more particularly to apparatus adapted for useon electricrailway cars, such as are operated on the trolley system and are provided with passenger-' seats on the top of the car. 1
.pole is normally insulated upon the trolleypedestal and that the trolley-wheel is normally insulated from the trolley-pole. If, however, these insulations break down, the pressure of the trolley-line is communicated to the trolleypedestal, thus bringing about a condition which puts the passengers at the top of the car in a position of danger. When such a condition supervenes, the signal provided for by the present invention is made, the motorman or conductor warns the passengers and removes them from danger, and the car is returned to the depot to have the defective insulation rectified.
My invention will be fully understood by, reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a diagram of an alarm system adapted to provide the protection going.
As a means for carrying my invention into effect I show a locked box -1, in which is mounted afuse 2, of fine copper wire, inclosed within a tube 3, of porcelain or other good heat-reindicated in the foresisting material. The upper end of the fuse is permanently attached to a brass cap 4:, which .is in connection with the trolley-pedestal 5,
OMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
is connected by a grounding-wire 9 with the comes into contact with the spring, thereby closing the circuit of a local battery 13, including a vibrating bell 14. This bell continues to ring until the box 1 has been unlocked, a new fuse substituted, and the pivoted lever7 restored to its normal position.
The foregoing are the parts essential to my alarm system and its successful operation.
For the sake of completeness I may add that a generator for the trolley system is indicated at 15, the trolley-wire at 16, and the trolleyarm at 17.
I claim as my invention I 1. The combination with an electrically-propelled vehicle, of a supply-circuit extending along the wayof the vehicle, a conducting-support upon the vehicle, a traveling contact carried by the said support and'making contact with the said supply-circuit, the said conducting-support being normally insulated from the traveling contact, a conducting-circuit connecting said support with the return-circuit of the vehicle, and an alarm or equivalent device brought into operation by currents trav-- to ground and containing a fuse, a pivoted sex, England, this 31st day of January, A. 1). weighted arm mechanically connected with the 1902.
said fuse, and a circuit-terminal located in the 1 y l path of movement of the said weighted arm, SIDNEY bHORL 5 the said arm and the said terminal being in- Witnesses:
cluded in a local signaling or alarm circuit. H. D. J AMESON,
Signed at London, in the county of Middle- A. NUTTING.
