declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
' In manufacturing twothread or striped looped fabrics by means of circular-knitting machines it is usual "to use two-guides alternately adjusted in such a manner that the threads of different color are alternately fed to the needles for a fixed period.
The object of this invention is to change the threads so that they will lap on a single needle only, no matter how many needles are arranged in the needle-cylinder.
According to the invention this is accomplished by making the guides movable in parallel lines side by side and acting positively and alternately. This may be attained, by way of example, by means of a rocking lever articulated to the guides and provided with an arm in'which engages the pin of a singlearmed lever arranged below the rocking le--.

As shown by Fig. 1, the thread-guide casing 1,wherein the two thread-guides are movable in parallel lines side by side, is fixed on a projection 4 of thread-guide ring 5. The guide and the guide-ring move, therefore, in the well-known manner,with the cam-cylinder 7 rotating with the. needle-cylinder 6. By means of the links 8 the thread-guides 2 and 3 are connected to the rocking lever 11, which carries the projection 9 and is arranged on the thread-guide casing 1, so as to oscillate round the pin 10. In the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the thread 16 is hooked into the needle 20, while the thread 17 is out of the reach of the needle and cannot be knitted. Now if the projection 9 of the rocking lever '11 is caused to move past a fixed abutment 21, alternately adjustable in the planes of the projections 9 and 15,-. while the guides are rotating in the direction of the arrow Figs. 2 and 3, the rocking lever is oscillated, whereby the'guide 2 is pushed forward and the guide 3 is drawn back, so that at a single needle only; but the device may be adjusted to overlap the threads on any desired number of. needles. For this purpose the pin 14 is fixed on the front end of an auxiliary lever 22, which is pivoted intermediate its ends on the stud 23 of the lever 13 and the rear end of which can be held fast in every position by a set-screw 2 1 on the lever 13. By shifting the lever 22 in one or the opposite direction the distance between the needle and the eye of the thread-guide 3 may be regulated. For the same purpose the projection 15 of the lever 13 is arranged so that it can be displaced and, Whenever desired, fixed by means of a set-screw 25. Moreover, the motion of the guides may be accelerated or retarded accordingly as the projection 15 on the lever 13 is drawn nearer to or farther from the pivot of this lever. For the purpose of moving the abutment 21 into the reach of the projeetions 9 and 15 this abutment is made as a disk 21, rotatable around a spindle 26, which is vertically movable and pressed down by a spring 27. The lower end of the spindle is connected by a link with the longer arm of a double-armed lever 29, pivoted at 28 on the frame of the machine, while the shorter arm of the sameis Within the reach of two projections 30 and31 of diflerent height arranged in a Well-known manner on achain 32, laid on a chain-wheel 33, which is rotated intermittently by the motor of the machine in any desired manner.
As soon as a long projection 30 bears upon the finger 34 of the lever 29 the abutment 21 is raised for a short time into the reach of the projection of the rocking lever 11, Whereas by the action of a shorter projection 31 the Y lever 29 is shifted, but only to such an extent as is required to bring the abutment 21 into the reach of the projection 15 of the singlearmed lever 13.
' The adjusted thread-guides remain in their respective positions in action until the next projection of the chain 32 actuates again'the lever 29, the period of the changing of the threads thus depending on the distance between the projections on the chain.
The adjusting device for changing the thread-guides acts so rapidly that the threadchanging takes place in a faultless and correct manner even at a very high speed of rotation of the knitting-machine.
I claim 1. In an apparatus for changing the threadguides in circular-knitting machines for manufacturing striped goods, the combination with two movable thread-guides, of a rocking lever, links connecting said thread-guides with the opposite ends of said lever, a single-armed lever pivoted at one end, a pin carried by the other end of said single-armed lever and engaging the rocking lever, both of said levers having lateral projections, an abutment, and means for throwing said abutment alternately into the path of said projections, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In an apparatus for changing the threadguid es in circular-knitting machines for manufacturing striped goods, the combination with two movable thread-guides, of a rocking lever, links connecting said thread-guides with the opposite ends of said lever, a single-armed lever pivoted at one end, a pin carried by the other end of said single-armed lever and engaging one end of the rocking lever, both of said levers having lateral projections, an abutment, means for throwing said abutment alternately into the path of said projections, and means for adjusting the said pin to either side of the longitudinal axis of the said singlearmed lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In an apparatus for changing the threadguides in circular-knitting machines for manufacturing striped goods, the combination with two horizontal, parallel and endwise-movable thrcad-guides, of a rocking lever, a single armed lever, said levers being arranged in different horizontal planes, links connecting the opposite ends of the rocking lever respectively with said thread-guides, means connecting the other end of the single-armed lever with the corresponding end of the rocking lever, lateral projections on said levers,
an abutment, a lever of the third order for raising and lowering said abutment to alternately throw it into the path of said projections, a pattern-chain and projections of different sizes carried by said pattern-chain arranged successively to engage one end of said last-named lever for raising and lowering the abutment, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
