SPEQIFICATION forming part of Letterslatent No. 7 61 ,382, datedMay, 31, 1904. Application filed July 7, 1903. SerialNo. 164,586; (No modeh) To all whom" it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER E. J AcKsoN and ART UR G. ADKINS, citizens of the United States, andres'idents of Portland,in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, .have invented a new and useful Improvementin Excavators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsas apart thereof.
' Our invention relates to a device for excavating for the foundation of buildings and other purposes, and has for its object to obtain an excavating implement which is especially adapted for effective work. To this end our invention comprises an earth scraper and carrier having combined thereelevation with the draft-gear removed. Figs.
3 and' d are details" of construction which will be again referred to and fully described in the body of this specification. Fig. 5 is aperspective detail, on a larger scale, of the linkbar 70 and the parts thereon looking toward the rear end. Fig. 6 is a perspective of the front end of our excavator, andFig. 7 is a detail of a gravel-plowshare.
Referring now to the reference-letters, th
body of the excavator is made of sheet-steel and comprises two side plates at a. The back end of the body is closed by a curved plate 6, which scrapes up the loose material and drags the same to the place of discharge. A stepc is provided for the workman to stand on while the excavator is being hauled forward to enable him to adjust the lever c, and thereby the plowshares ff. The middle parts of the two sides of the body are united by a yoke d,which also serves as a fulcrum for the operatinglever e, by which the plowsharesff are raised and lowered, as mentioned. The number of plowshares used may be varied as found convenient. As shown in the drawings, there are four of them, consisting of two end plowshares f" and two intermediate plowshares f f. These plowshares are so shaped as to lift the ymaterial plowed up but slightly, and to this endtheir laterally-extending portions have only a very gradual slope, as is to be seen in the end View Fig. 2.
plowshares are provided with perforated bosses ff Through the bosses f is inserted the through-rod g, by which therear ends of the plowshares are pivotally suspended. The ends of the rod 9 extend through slots it in the sides a c and are threaded to receive nuts 91, by which to secure the rod in place at its adjustedheight. 9' (see Fig. 2)'clamp said rear ends of the plowshares in place.- The rod h is preferably made 7 adjustable, so as to beable to adjust the heel The two ends of the shank portion f 2 of the The set collars of the plowshares,. as may be convenient. I
Through the bosses f of the plowsharesis inserted a brace-rod 3', serving to unite and hold the front ends of the plowshares, collars Z Z (omitted from Fig. 6, but shown in Figs. 2 and 3) being placed on such rod for the purpose of restraining the front end of the plowshares against lateral play. The ends of the bracing-'.
rod 1 enter the bosses f on the end plowshares, but do not project beyond the same, so as not to interfere with the lifting and lowering of the plowing contrivances. The front ends of the plowshares are respectively connected with a link-bar 70 by means of forked the draft-bar 9". 5'0 and q are secured to set-collars Z a a, provided with perforated lugs. The yoke m is suspended from a clevis n, secured to the front end of the lever e and longitudinally movable to adjust the lift or the power of the lever c. In cooperation with this arrangement and purpose the lever e is also provided with a series of holes 0 to allow for the shifting of the fulcrum-point.
.Thetwo ends r of the draft-bar r are bent at an angle and forked, and-such ends are secured by bolts s, inserted through holes t, thereby rendering the draft-bar adjustable in height, as may be required.
In the practical use of our excavator a bridge is built with an inclined approach and a hole in the elevated platform through which to discharge the material dragged to such hole by the scraper-back 6.
Our excavator is conveniently-hauled to and fro by a cable and engine. The haul-back cable is attached to a ring a). In cases where the ground is of a gravelly or stony nature it will be more efiective to substitute plowshares provided with prongs w, as shown in Fig. 7.
The front ends of the sides a a are provided with shoes a to prevent the same cutting into the ground while one excavator is being hauled forward and without which provision the action of the plows would have a tendency to drag those ends down into the ground.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim is- 1. An excavator, comprising a body consisting of two sides, a scraper-back L, and a draft-gear; a series of transversely-arranged removable plowshares, the inner ends of which are hinged on a rod transversely secured on said body; a lever-controlled lifting device to which the front ends of such plowshares are connectedand by which the same are raised and lowered as required, and means for latch.- ing the operating-lever in its adjusted position, substantially as described.
2. Anexcavator comprising a body consisting of two sides and a scraper-back b; a yoke or support 0? secured on thesides; an operatinglever e, adjustably fulcrumed on such yoke; a rod g, having threaded ends and nuts 2', thereon, adjustably secured in slots 71, provided in said sides; plowshares hinged by their inner ends on said rods g; a brace-rod j, and set-collars on said rods 9 and j, holding the plowshares against lateral motion; a yoke m, suspended from the end of the lever e; a rod 70, suspended by such yoke m; a draftbar, links connecting the rod 70 with said draftbar and with the front ends of the plowshares,
and means for lifting the lever e, in its adjustable position, substantially as described.
3. An excavator, comprising a body consisting of two sides; a scraper-back b, and a draft-gear; a series of transversely-arranged removable plowshares, the inner ends of which are hinged on a rod transversely secured on said body; a lever-controlled lifting device to 5 which the front ends of such plowshares are connected and by which the same are raised and lowered as required, and means for latching the operating-lever in its adjusted position; and shoes on the front ends of the sides of the body to prevent such ends cutting into the ground, substantially as described.
4. An excavator comprising a body consisting of two sides and a scraper-back b,- a yoke or support (Z, secured on the sides; an oper- 6O ating-lever e, adjustably fulcrumed on such yoke; a rod g, having threaded ends and nuts 2', thereon, adjustably secured in slots It, provided in said sides, plowshares hinged by their inner ends. on said rods 7; a brace-rod j, and 5 set-collars on said rods g and j, holding the plowshares against lateral motion; a yoke m suspended from the end of the lever e; a rod k, suspended by such yoke m; a draft-bar, links connecting the rod l", with said draft- 7 bar and with the front ends of the plowshares, means for lifting the lever e, in its adjusted position, and shoes on the front ends of the sides of the body to prevent such ends cutting into the ground, substantially as dcscribed.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
