PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES P- LOWRY, or WINCHESTER, KENTUCKY.
VHEMP-SHAKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent a... 761,311, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed January 18, 1904. Serial No. 189,590. (No model.)
To alZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES PzLownY, a citizen of the UnitedSt'ates, residing at Winchester, in the'county of Clark and State of Ken-- tucky, have invented a new and useful Hemp- Shaking Machine, of which the following is a specification.
chines, and has for its principal object to provide amachine whereby hemp which has been previously broken upon a. hemp-break ofany ordinary type may be vigorously shaken in order to separate from the hemp fiber the broken pieces of the woody material of the stalks which may be adherent thereto.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of hemp-shaking ma chine in which are included two separate shak mg mechanisms and means for alternatelyimparting power thereto, so that while one of the shaking mechanisms is in operation the hemp already shaken may be detached from the other shaking mechanism and unshaken hemp secured thereto instead;
A further object of the-invention is to provide a hempeshaking machine in which the movement mechanically imparted to the hemp to detach thefragments of woody material from the fiber is substantially like that imparted to the hemp when shaken by hand.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a hemp-shaking machine having means for varyingthe throw of the shakers in order to cause the action of the machine to be-gentle or. violent, as may be desired.
In attaining the objects --above mentioned and others which willappear as the invention is more fully disclosed I make use of thenovel form of hemp-shaking machinehereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in a preferred form of embodiment in theaccompanying drawings, it being understood that changes in the minor structural details thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the advantages thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 1s aplan view of the complete machine. F1g. 2 is a new m longitudinal section, taken on the line 2 2,
Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrow thereon. Fig. 3 isadetail view showing the mode of connecting the pitman with the wrist-plates. Fig. 4 is a detail viewof aportion of the apparatus.
Referring to the drawings, in which cor- "respondingparts are designated. by similar This invention relates to hemp-shaking ma-h characters of reference throughout the several views, 1' designates the bed ofthe machine, which maybe of any ordinary or preferred construction. Arranged transversely of the bed and substantially midway between the ends thereof is the main driving-shaft 2 of the machine, which is mounted'to turn in bearingblocks 3, rigidly secured to the bed. The shaft 2 is providedat one end with a pulley 4 for the application of power to the shaft by means of a belt 5, which is driven by any suitable form. of motor. (Not shown.) At the 0pposite end of the main driving-shaft 2 a large gear 6 is rigidly mounted, the gear. being preferably beveled, as shown, and adapted to mesh with smaller beveled gears 7 7, mounted at the adjacent ends of shafts 8 8, which turn in bearing-blocks 9 9, mounted upon the bed of the machine, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. At either side of the bearing-blocks 3, in which the main driving-shaft is journaled, is provided a shaker.
The shakers consist of frames pivotally mounted for a seesaw movement in suitable upright standards upon the bed of the machine, movement being imparted to the shaker-frames by-mean's of pitmen connected with the shafts 8'8. p
The two shakers are exactly alike, and each is mounted for oscillatory movement in suitably-braced standards 10 10, which extend upward from the bed of the machine. Each shaker is in the formof a frame comprising 1 a square shaft 11, havmg gudgeons at the ends f 5 otally secured to the middle bar 12 and having the other end supported upon a wrist-pin 16, which is adjustably secured in a wrist-plate 17 at the end of one of the shafts 8. Each of the Wrist-plates 17 is provided with a plurality of openings 18 at different distances from the center of the plate, so that the wristpin may be set at different distances from the center of the plate, according to the length of stroke of the pitman which is desired.
The means employed for clamping the hemp at the ends of the'breaker-frames is exceedingly simple. Each of the end pieces 13 of the breaker-frames is longitudinally grooved on its outer face, and a rod 14 is held normally in engagement with the groove in each end piece by means of hooks 20, provided at the ends of the pieces 13 and engaging projecting studs at the ends of the rods 14. The end pieces are preferably provided with latches 2O to prevent the disengagement of the hooks with the ends of the rods 14, and, if desired, the hooks may be so constructed as to have a certain amount of resiliency; but ordinarily the elasticity of the rods 14 will be sufficient.
In order to provide for the alternate operation of the two shakers, I have the gears 7 Slidably mounted upon the shafts 8, to which they are connected by splines in the usual manner, and provide shifting-levers 21 upon a supporting-bar 22 to impart the necessary sliding movementto the gears? to throw them into and out of engagement with the gear 6 upon the main driving-shaft 2. In order to enable the movement of one of the shiftinglevers to impart movement to the other shifting-lever at the same time, I preferably arrange between the two levers a link 23, which is detachably connected with each, so that it may be removed whenever it is desired to operate both of the shakers at once.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that in the operation of the machine only one of the gears 7 will ordinarily be allowed to mesh with the gear 6 at one,
time, and when movement is being imparted. from the driving-shaft to one of the shakers the other shaker will be at rest, so that the hemp which has already been shaken may be detached therefrom and unshaken hemp secured in its stead. As the shifting of the levers to bring one of the shakers to rest and impart movement to the other can be accomplished in an instant, but little time need be lost in the actual control of the machine, and
teneii two men Working at opposite sides of the ma-' chine will be sufficient to operate it.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a machine of the character specified, a teetering member, and means for securing hemp thereon.
2. In a machineof the character specified, a frame mounted for seesaw movement, and means at the ends of said frame for securing hemp thereon.
3. In a machine of the character specified, a frame mounted for seesaw movement, and clamping devices at the ends of said frame for positively securing hemp thereon.
4. In a machine of the character specified, a frame mounted for seesaw movement, hempsecuring devices at the ends of said frame, and means for imparting seesaw movement to said frame, said means being adjustable to provide for swings of different amplitudes.
5. In apparatus of the character specified, a pair of vibratory frames, means for securing hemp upon said frames, and means for alternately throwing said frames into and out of operation.
6. In apparatus of the character specified, a vibratory frame, said frame having a grooved member at one end thereof, and a rod disposed longitudinally of said member and normally secured in the groove thereof.
7. In a machine of the character specified, a vibratory frame, a rotating shaft, a wristplate mounted on said shaft, a wrist-pin adjustably mounted on the wristplate, and a pitman mounted upon said wrist-pin and pivotally connected with said frame.
8. In a machine of the character specified, a pair of vibratory shakers, a main drivingshaft, a gear rigidly mounted upon the main driving-shaft, an auxiliary driving-shaft for each of said shakers, and a gear slidabl y mounted upon each of said auxiliary shafts and adapted for engagement with said main driving-gear.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
