Kpplication filed September 4, 1903. Serial No. 171,894. (No model.) i I To alt whom, it may concern l ".Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. ScHwIER,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Imbest mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions. My invention relates tomechanical toys,
and is an improvement uponthe structure described and claimed in the United States Letters Patent N o. 67 2,538, issued the 23d day of April, 1901. e
The object of the invention is to economize in the structure of the device described in said patent, whereby said structure may be made more cheaply and durably.
The said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure I represents a side elevation embodying my invention. Fig. II represents a top plan view thereof. Fig. III represents the bottom plan view of the vehicle forming a part of my invention. Fig. 1V represents a detail view of a portion of the vehicle, illustrating the method of attaching the end portion to the side pieces thereof, so as to form a continuous side portion; and Fig. V represents a View similar to that shown in Fig. IV, showing said portions attached.
The toy embodying my invention consists of a representation of a draft-animal, such as a horse, and a vehicle represented as drawn thereby, said animal or horse, as illustrated, having movable limbs mechanically connected with one of the vehicle-axles, so asto exact a movement of the limbs when the vehicle is drawn along a surface, so as to rotate said axle. The specific means for connecting said limbs with the vehicle do not form any part of this invention and may be hence omitted from this description, the method of .eflecting such results being fully described in said above-named Letters Patent.
The improved animal structure consists of two sheet-metal elements A and B of a configuration such as to effect when juxtaposed a representation of the horses body covered with a blanket, one portion being left and the other right in construction. The vehicle O embodies the sheet-metal portion consisting of the unitary side structure 0, having its extremities united with each other, preferably in front, by means of lugs O and apertures '0 and 0 as shown in Figs.
: IV and V. The bottom of said body consists of a plate 0 and is provided with side lugs 0 and front and rear lugs 0 as shown in Fig. III. The side portion 0 is provided with side lugs 0 and front and rear lugs 0 as shown in Fig. II. All the above-described lugs are bent over and upon the respective contiguous elements of the said body portion-that is, the
lugs of the side portion are bent upon the bottom portion and the lugs of the bottom portion are bent upon the side portion-as will be readily understood. Upon the rear of the vehicle-body are secured two axle-supports D and D, each being provided with two lugs d, passing through a suitable aperture in the bottom of the vehicle-body, as
shown in Fig. II, these lugs being bent over the lower element of each of which is formed a projection f, which forms the bearing for the front axle F. The central portion of such support is provided with two segmental slots f which receive two lugs 0 punched from the bottom of the vehicle and bent over and upon the said support so as not to clamp but receive same, as shown in Fig. 111. Suitable wheels are secured to the front axle.- To each side of each support, and preferably in the angle formed between its main portion and downwardly-extending spring portion, is secured a thill G, such securing being preferably eflected by means of two small ears f, turned over and bent upon the end of the thills, so as to secure each at two points, as shown in Fig. 111. These thills extend inwardly and upwardly and pass through openings a and Z), formed in the rear portion of the animalbody, as shown in Figs. I and II. From these openings the thills extend forwardly behind the body portions A and B and then pass out through openings a and formed in the front portion of the animal-body. From these front openings a and b said thills extend a short distance and are bent outwardly, as shown in Fig. 11. As will be seen in Fig. II, the thills are bent inwardly, so as to effect their entrance in the rear opening of the body, whereby it will be seen that as a result of the front and rear angular construction the thills are rendered secure against removal without the use of solder.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention- 1. In a mechanical toy, the combination of two sheet-metal elements suitably secured and of a configuration such as to efiecta representation of a draft-animals body, legs suitably mounted upon the inside of said body, and a vehicle provided with thills, the latter passing through the rear portion'and from the outside of said body behind same and then through the front portion of said body from the inside.
2. In a mechanical toy, the combination of two sheet-metal elements of a configuration such as will when said elements are juxtaposed effect a representation of a draft animals body, each element being provided with lugs along their upper edges, the lugs of one element being bent over upon and secured to the contiguous other element; legs suitably mounted upon the inside of said body, and a vehicle provided with thills, the latter passing through the rear portion and from the outside of said body, behind same and then through the front portion of said body.
