PlLE-WIRE SHARPENER FOR LOOMS'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,052, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed March 18, 1904.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TUNs'rALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented Improvements in Pile-Wire Sharpeners for Looms, of
which the following is aspecification'.
The object of my invention is to provide an effective device for the sharpening ofthe knives of pile-wires, which object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a view of suflicient of a loom to illustrate the application of my improved pile- 5 wire sharpener thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation'of the sharpening device on a larger scale and showing part of the frame of the loom in section. Fig. 3 is a view of the sharpening device looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, and omitting the loom-frame. Fig. 4 is a view illustrating a simpler form of sharpening device than that shown in the other figures of the drawings; and Figs. 5 and 6 are .respectively a plan view and a front view,
" 5 partly in section, of a further modification of the invention.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings part of the frame of the loom and part of the swinging lay are shown by dotted lines, said swinging lay hav- 3 ing an antifriction-roller 1, which acts upon a lever 2, hung to a standard 3, and also acted upon by a spring't, so that as the lay swings vibrating movement will be imparted to the lever 2. Said lever is connected by a link 6 to a block 7 to which is secured a transverse head 8, having bearings for the stem 9 of a file or other sharpening device 10, the latter being free to rotate in said bearings, and the stem of the sharpener having at its lower end 4 aworm-wheel 11, which meshes with a worm 12 on a shaft or spindle 13, adapted to a hearing in a depending bracket 14 on the head 8.
The shaft 13 has at its other end a ratchetwheel 15, which under certain circumstances engages with a pawl 16, hung to a plate 17, which is rigidly mounted upon a bar 18 of the loom-frame, the pawl 16 being acted upon by spring 19 and having its forward movement Serial No. 198,743. (No model.)
I arrested by a pin 20 on said plate 17. The
upper end of the plate 17 has a curved slot 21 formed in it, and in this slot travels an antifriction-roller 22, carried-by a bolt 23, which is secured to the upper end of the link 6, washers 2 1 and 25 being interposed, respectively, between the plate 17 and the head of the bolt and between the said plate 17 and the upper end of the link 6, whereby as the said link is raised and lowered by the action of the lever 2, the upper end of the link, and consequently the sharpening device 10 carried thereby, is caused to move through a curved longitudinal path.
The sharpening device is intended to act upon the knife or cutter of the foremost pilewire as of the series which has been inserted in the web of cloth which is being woven'just prior to the withdrawal of said pile-wire from the web, and in order to insure proper contact of the knife with the sharpener the head 8 is provided with an upwardly-projecting bar or finger 26, preferably beveled at the upper end, which finger as the sharpening device is raised enters between the foremost pilewire a: of the series and the next adjoining pile-wire, and thus serves to press the said foremost pile-wire 92 against the sharpening device and prevent any deflection of the wire under the action of the sharpener. By reason of. the curved slot 21 in the plate 17 that portion of the sharpening device which is in contact with the cutting edge of the knife of the pile-wire is caused to pass over the same in a curved path, which insures the effective sharpening of said cutting edges and causes the sharpener to act on all portions of the said edge from its highest point down to the contracted throat between the knife and the body of the wire. As the head 8 approaches the limit of its downward movement the ratchetwheel 15. is engaged by the pawl 16 and through the medium of the worm and wormwheel imparts a slight movement of partial rotation to the sharpening device'lO, so that the surface presented by the same to the knives of the pile-wires is constantly changing, and even wear of the sharpener is thereby insured. Such rotation offthe sharpener, however, is not essential to every embodiment of my invention. For instance, in Fig. 4 I have illustrated a construction in which the stem of the sharpener is secured to the head 8 by means of a set-screw 27, so as to be incapable of rotary movement except such as may be effected by hand after first loosening said setscrew, and other modifications of my invention within the scope of my broader claims will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which said invention appertains.
One other modification is represented in Figs. 5 and 6, on reference to which it will be observed that the link 6 acts upon a lever 30, hung to a stud 31, which'projects from a head 32, the latter being pivotally mounted upon a'lug 33, which is bolted to the loomframe. The lever 30 has a pivotally-mounted head 3a, to which is secured a vertical spindle 35, and. the latter is secured by means of a nut 36 to the tubular sharpening device, which may be composed of any available material. By'turning thcsharpener around its spindle different portions of the same can be brought into action, a fresh surface being available as soon as one becomes worn. The same is true of the sharpener shown in Fig. i. As the lever 30 is vibrated by reason of its connection'with thelever 2 the sharpening device is caused to swing in the are of a circle in contact with the pile-wire knife, adjustment of the sharpener from and toward the knife being effected by swinging either the leverhead 34: or the pivot-head 32 and securing the same in position after adjustment. Hence proper contact of the sharpener with the knives and proper pressure of said sharpener against the knives can always be maintained.
- Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A pile-wire sharpener for looms, consisting of a sharpening device and a movable carrier therefor, whereby said sharpening device is caused to travel in contact with the cuttingsurface of the pile-wire knife, substantially as specified.
- 2. A pile-wire sharpener for looms, consisting of a sharpenlng device, and means whereby the same is caused to travel in a curved path in contact with the pile-wire knife, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, in a pile-wire sharpener for looms, of a' sharpening device,-means for moving the same in contact with the pilewire knife, and means for mounting the sharpener. upon 1ts carrier, so that it is rotatable around its axis, substantially as speclfied.
4. The combination, in a pile-wire sharpener for looms, of a sharpening device, means for moving the same in contact with the pilewire knife, and means for imparting intermittent movement of partial rotation to the sharpening device, substantially as specified.
. 5. The combination, in a pile-wire sharpener for looms, of a sharpening device, means for moving the same in contact with the pilewire knife, and a support for preventing deflcction of the knife while the sharpener is acting thereupon, substantially as specified.
6. The combination, in a pile-wire sharpener for'looms, of a sharpening device, means for moving the same in contact with the pilewire knife, and a finger movable with the sharpener and serving to bear against the back of the knife while the'sharpener is acting upon the face of the same, substantially as specifled. I
7. The combination, in a pile-wire sharpener for-looms, of a sharpening device, a carrier therefor, means for vertically reciprocating said carrier, and a guide-plate having a curved slot for engaging said carrier whereby the sharpener is caused to travel in a curved path, substantially as specified.
'8. The combination, ina pile-wire sharpener for looms, of a sharpening device, a carrier in which said sharpener is mounted so as to be free to rotate, means for moving said carrier so as to cause the sharpener to travel in contact with the'pile wire knife, and gearing, having as elements a ratchet and pawl, whereby movement of partial rotation is imparted to the sharpener as it approaches the termination of its travel in one direction, substantially as specified. 9. The combination, ma pile-wire sharpener for loomspofthe sharpening device, a
movable carrier therefor, and means whereby movement'is imparted to said carrier from the swinginglay of the loom, substantially as specified. l
- 1,0. The combination, in a pile-wire sharpener for looms, of the'sharpening device, a movable carrier therefor, a lever hung to a fixed member of the loom, a link connecting said lever to the carrier and a projection on the swinging lay for contact withsaid lever, sub- 3 stantially as specified.
i In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' WILLIAM TUNSTALL.
