SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,975, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed October 21, 1903. Serial No. 177,910. (No model),
say, in the county of Cooke and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wagons.
The object of the invention is-the providing of a new and improved running-gear which employs in. its construction the arrangement of the reach or coupling beams or poles and to provide a new and improved means for connecting said reaches with the front axle and its bolster.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved brake mechanism in the construction of a wagon and also means carried by the end-gate thereof for retaining the same in a 7 locked position upon thewagon-body.
With these and other objects in view the mvention consists in the novel construction, comb1nat1on,-and arrangement of parts, as
-will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated I in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wagon constructed in accordance with my invention, showing a part of the body thereof and running-gear in section. Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 designates an ordinary Wagon-body, which is mounted upon pivotal bolsters 2,

Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be seen that an annular plate 2 is rigidly secured to the bottom of each of the wagon-bolsters 2, and a similar plate 3 is rigidly secured to the top of the stationary axle-bolster 3.

The bolsters 3 are spaced apart from the axles 4 by blocks 5 or like means and provide thereby a space between the axles and their bolsters. Secured to the front axle and its bolster 3 is an ordinary hound 6, which is provided with a tongue 7. Wheels constructed in ordinary manner are journaled upon the axles 4:" of the wagon. The rear axle is retained in an assembled position with the forward or front axle by means of parallel coupling-poles or reaches 8, which are providedwith brace-plates 9, secured to their ends. Said brace-plates 9 are adapted to engage the under side of the rear axle, and the saidpoles 8 are removably mounted upon the top or horizontal surface of the said rear axle. For securing the rear end of the said coupling-poles 8 in an assembled position with the rear axle a bolt or like means 10 is caused to extend through the axlebolster 3 and retain the brace-plate 9 and the reach 8 in an assembled position thereon.- Secured upon the forward axle it"and its stationary bolster 3 is a suitable flat plate 11, which is provided with a curved brace-plate or bracket 12, secured thereto, and between said plate 11 and the brace 12 is pivotally mounted an annular plate 13, which is provided with an integral extension 14. A central aperture is formed upon the plate-13, a'nd through said brace 12, plates 13 and 11 is passed a suitable bolt 15 for retaining the said annular plate 13 in an assembled position with Formed integral with said annular plate 13 and extending laterally therefrom are a plurality of arms 16. To the forward end of the reaches or coupling-poles 8 are secured brace-plates 17, which are adapted to engage the end surface of the laterally-extending projections or arms 16, and by means of a bolt or other suitable means passing through the engaging end of the poles 8, which are secured to the laterally-extending projections 16, the poles 8 and plate 13 are retained in an assembled position.' The object of this forward pivoted connection provided for the poles or reaches is to furnish means upon the running-gear for permitting 1 of a slight vertical play of the forward axle and its wheels journaled thereon and retain the parallel poles 8 in a comparatively horizontal plane. By the permitting of this play of the front axle it will be obvious that the rear gear of the wagon will not sustain any strain by the independent vertical swinging movement of the forward gear. The actuation of this independent movement of the forward gear is usually caused bythe same passing over uneven ground and raising one of the wheels out of the same horizontal plane with the rear portion of the running-gear. It will be obvious that it is desirable in some instances to construct the primary bolster upon which the body of the wagon is mounted and the axle-bolster with a curved or inclined outer edge to more completely facilitate the operation of this described improvement.
It will be obvious from the foregoing description of the running-gear that while the tion.
movement thereof in a vertical plane the said axle and rear axle are provided with means whereby movement of the front axlewill also synchronously pivot the rear axle and its stationary bolster relative to the wagon-bolster 2.
In constructing the improved wagon I have provided new and improved locking means for the end-gate, which consists in providing an assembled end-gate 18 with notches or apertures 19 formed upon the vertical edge of the side thereof. A suitable brace 20 is also assembled with the end gate 18, through which is passed a bolt or stud 2 1, upon which is detachably secured a pivoted locking-bar 22. The said pivoted bar 22 is provided with a plurality of flanges 23, formed integral therewith and extending at an angle to said main portion of the bar 22. Extensions 24: are formed upon the outer ends of the pivoted bar 22 and are provided with notches. 25, which are adapted to engage suitable studs or extensions 26, projecting in a horizontal plane from guides 27, secured in a vertical position to the inner side of the wagon-body 1. The said studs or extensions 26 are provided with suitable heads for preventing the end-gate from moving out of its normal posi- It will be obvious that the said end gate can be easily removed from the body by pivoting the 'bar 22 upon its axis 21, disengaging the end of said bar from the headed extensions 26, thereby unfastening the locklng means which is provided for retaining the end-gate in an assembled position upon the wagon-body.
In constructing the wagon I have provided a brake mechanism mounted upon the wagon- I body and the running-gear therefor which consists in mounting upon the forward end of the wagon-body a suitable lever mechanism 28 of ordinary construction and securing to one end thereof alongitudinally-extending bar or rod 29, which is secured at one end to a pivoted bar 30, secured at 31 to one side of the wagon-body. To the opposite end from that to which the longitudinal bar 29 is secu'red a suitable link connection 32 is secured to the bar 30. A crank-arm 33 is removably secured upon the bottom of the wagon-body by means of brackets or clamps 3 1. The said crank-arm 33 is provided with extensions 35 and 36 at each end, formed integral therewith and projecting in different angles from the main portion of the crank-arm 33. Bifurcations are formed upon the ends 35 and 36 for the reception of link members. The link member 32; which is pivotally secured to the bar or rod 30, is also connected in the bifurcation of the extension 35 of the crank member 33. A horizontal bar 37 is secured to the rear portion of the axle-bolster of the rear axle by means of bracket members 38 or the like, and said horizontal bar or member is provided at its outer ends with curved extensions 39, upon which are mounted shoes or blocks 40. Extending in a different angle from that of the extensions 39 is a bifurcated projection 41, which is integrally secured to the member 37. Within the bifurcation of the extension 41 is secured a link member42, which is also secured within the bifurcation formed upon the extension 36 of the crank member 33.
In operation the actuation of the different parts of the brake mechanism is caused by throwing the lever mechanism 28, and thereby pivoting the link member 30, crank member 33, and the horizontal rod or bar 37, thereby causing the blocks or shoes 40 to engage the periphery of the wheels journaled upon one of the axles 4:. 7
While the construction of the end-gate looking mechanism and also the brake mechanism is a part of the invention, the primary object of the present invention relates to the construction of the improved running-gear, and particularly the pivoted connecting means for securing the coupling means fastened to the rear of the front axle or running-gear.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the foregoing description the construction of my improved brake and end-gate mechanisms, I do not claim such structures in this application, for I have applied for Letters Patent separately for these improvements.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A running-gear mechanism,comprising a front and rear axle, bolsters mounted upon said axles, a pivoting-plate secured to the front axle, said plate provided with lateral extensions projecting therefrom in opposite directions, and coupling means detachably secured to each of said lateral extensions and removably secured to said rear axle.
2. A running-gear mechanism, comprising a front and rear axle, a plate secured to said front axle, a bracket secured to said plate, a' rotating member carried by said plate and bracket, integral projections secured to said rotating member and extending therefrom in opposite directions,removable coupling means secured near the end of each projection of said rotating member and detachably secured to said rear axle.
3. A running-gear mechanism, comprising a front and rear axle, bolsters mounted upon said axle, a plate secured to said front axle and its bolster, a bracket detachably secured to said plate, removable means carried by the lower end of said bracket and said plate, a
moving member journaled upon said removable means, and coupling means secured to said moving member and said rear axle.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a front and rear axle provided with spaced bolsters, wheels journaled upon said axles, Wagon-bolsters mounted upon said axle-bolsters, a plate secured to the forward axle and its bolster, a brace secured to said plate, coupling means secured in a parallel position and connected to said rear axle,
and connecting means movably mounted between said plate secured to the front axle and said brace secured thereto for positively retaining the parallel coupling means in an assembled position.
5. In a device of the character described,

bolsters mounted upon each axle, a pivoting member journaled upon said front axle, comprising a body portion, integral projections extending from said body portion in the same transverse plane, parallel coupling means provided with braces at each end detachably secured to said rear axle and removably secured to each of said extensions of said pivoting member.
6. A running-gear mechanism, comprising a front and rear axle, a rotating member secured to said front axle, comprising a body portion formed with a fiat abutting face, integral extensions projecting from said body portion at right angles to said abutting face, coupling means carried by each of said extensionsand detachably secured to said rear axles.
7. A running-gear mechanism, comprising a plurality of axles, a rotating member journaled upon one of said axles, said rotating member provided with a body portion, integral webbed extensions projecting therefrom,
I coupling means removably mounted upon said webbed extensions and detachably secured to the rear axle.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a front and rear axle, axlebolsters secured thereto, wheels journaled upon said axles, a pivoted body-bolster mounted upon said front axle-bolster, parallel poles provided with braces at each end thereof secured to said rear axle, a swinging plate provided with lateral extensions secured to the forward axle, and means connecting said parallel poles to said lateral extensions of said swinging plate.
