'lO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Bc it known that I, ENOSS. MILLER, of Baltimore, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Ohio, have invented a new-and improved End-Gate for lVagons; and Ido herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those sltilled in theart to malte and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings forming-part of' this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the rear end of the wagonjbox, showing the spring-catches and slotted rest-bar.'
Figure 2 is a side view of the end of the wagon-box, with the end-gate adjusted "to serve asa feed-trough.
Figure 3 is a similar view, but having the end-gate locked for travel.
Figure l is a det-ail view ofthe hook and nut.
Similar letters of reference ndicatecorrespouding parts.
The object ofthis invention is to provide amend-gate for a Wagon-box, which shall serve both as an `end-` gate and a feed-trough, as occasion may demand.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, the wagon-box is shown at A. B is one end of the gate, which, with a similar one, is aiixed by nails or otherwise to the gate-board, which latter is indicated by the horizontal dotted line continuous with the line of thebottm, D, of the wagon-box. Alixed to the end of the betteln, D, is the rest-harf, having slots a and projecting ends f.
Whenthe end-gate is converted into a-feed-trongh, the -hook e, which is the projecting end of theI metallic strap m m', catches under a pin, d, as shown, the end, B, resting on the projecting end f', as shown. rIhe endgate and its ends D form part of the trough, which latter is completed by the board z', and another narrower though otherwise similar one fitting into slots in each of the ends I3. The bon-rd i is held by the catches b and hooks on the bottom ofthe trough, the slots a a, in the rest-barf, being for the purpose of receiving the plates bearing these said hooks. The-outer and narrower board'lits-in vertical slots, as indicated bythe dotted line n. This latter board is heldin place by a button, g, the flanged end of which can be brought over the 'ends of` the last board to hold it in place. i
When the end-gate is to be used simply as a gate vor tail-board for the box A, the board t' and its corresponding one are removed and placed in the wagon. rlhe end-gate is then attached, as shown at iig. 3. The notches lin the ends B rest on the projecting ends f', as showmand the spring-catches b hold the end-gate firmly in place. At fig. 4 isv shown a hook-device for attaching auxiliary chains to give additional support, if required, whenthe end-gate is used as a feed-trough. The hooks j hold the ends of the ehains,.the other ends of which are allxed to points on the wagon-box. The hooks are provided with plates h for tightening the hold on the chains. Vthen the end-gate is used as its name imports, the hooks are drawn into the recesses 7c, so that they shall not prevent the endsB from slipping on the wagon-box. Only one end and side are shown at figs. l, 2, and 3, but, as each part there shown is duplicated at the opposite end of the trough or end-gate, they have been described inthe plural number. l
I claim as new, and desire toseeure by Letters Patent- The combined gate and feed-trough, constructed as described, and consisting of the bottom, m', having endpieees B adapted to receive pieces in, and provided with buttonsg and hooks tj, when said pieces B are notched at Zto ft over projections'f ofthe slotted rest-barf, andare furnished with spring-hooks e, which catch under pins (l xed inthe sides A of the wagonbody, all arranged and voperating as described for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my'ri'nvention signed by me, this 24th day of January, 1868.4
` E. S. MILLER.
