To all whom, it may concern;
and J AMES M. GAUME, citizens of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Harper and State of Kansas, have invented cer- 1 automatic weighing-machines, the objects of which are, first, to provide an automatlc;
weighing-machine which shall automatically receive, weigh, and discharge in. amountsof predetermined weight substances generally of a granular nature-such as sand, coal, &c., and grains, millstuifs, and the l ke with speed and accuracy; second, to so construct machine which shall be cheap in cost of manufacture, reliablein its operation, very durable, and not at all liable to get out of order. WV e are aware that automatic weighingmachines are in use in which a series of rotating bins actuate a weighted lever or scalebeam by gravity of substance being weighed therein, and therefore do not broadly claim such as being our invention; but all such inventions of which we are aware are either controlled by fragile or complicated parts liable to get out of order or have the outer ends of their rotating bins open, leaving substance weighed thereby to press outwardly against the inner surface of a box or casing inclosing them (not shown) and in which the various adhesive tendencies of said substances to the inner surface of said box and the lodgment and binding of small particles of substance between said box and the edges of the annular ends of said open bins act as irregular resistances to the rotation of said bins, thereby causing irregular and inaccurate weighing; but we are not aware that automatic weighing-machines have ever been known or used prior to our invention hereof in which substance being weighed rests solely against the inner surface of one ofa series of rotating bins unretarded by frictional contact of substance weighed with any fixed partsuch as the cover, casing, or discharge-spoutexcept where burdened with fragile or complicated parts liable to get out of order, as hereinbefore stated.
Therefore what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an automatic weighing-machine, the
combination with a series of rotatable bins, having fixed partitions extending between said bins to the limits thereof, of one end gate in each bin, each end gate being so pivotally attached to the sides of its bin as to operate by gravity in the manner and for the purposes specified.
2. In an automatic weighing-machine, three bins, in one annular series, mounted upon a rotatable shaft, having fixed bearings and supports, and carrying rigidly secured upon the extremities of said shaft, one or more triangular cams, each cam having three outward projections or apexes, acting in conjunction with a surface-plated member of a weighted lever or scale-beam for operatively holding and releasing said bins, as specified.
3. In an automatic weighing-machine, a series of three rotatable bins, having fixed partitions extending between said bins, to the limits thereof; each bin having one end gate pivotally attached at its upper edge to the sides of its bin and oscillatable therein; the whole being secured upon a rotatable shaft, having fixed bearings and supports, and provided with one or more triangular cams, each cam having three apexes; in combination with a weighted lever or scale-beam having a surface-plated member normally resting upon two of said apexes, and means for rotating said bins, shaft and cam as specified.
4:. In an automatic weighing-machine the combination with a series of three rotatable bins, having fixed partitions extending between said bins, to the limitsthereof, and a pivotally-attached end gate in each of said bins, a triangular cam and a weighted lever for operatively holding and releasing said bins; of a cover and a hopper above, and of a discharge-spout beneath said bins, as shown and specified.
5. In an automatic weighing-machine, a series of three rotatable bins, having fixed partitions extending between said bins, to the limits thereof and a pivotally-attaehed end gate in each of said bins, the whole, operatively rotated by gravity of substance being weighed, and having a triangular cam, and an adjustably-weighted lever or scale-beam, one or more members of which is provided with means for operating any ordinary tallybox.
