CAR-VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,795, dated May 24, 1904.
' Application med August 14, 1903. ,semina 169,512. (Numan.)
Z'o all whom t 11mg/ concern.' 9, in which case the stern 6 will be branched,
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. LAWRENCE, a and one branch, 10, will lead to each mouth'- 5o citizen of the United States, residing at Bospiece. The two mouthpieces terminate in the ton, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massingle plate 11, which has apertures therein 5 sachusetts, have invented an Improvement in to correspond withithe opening in the mouth- Oar-Ventilators, of which. the following--depieces. Itis myintention to cast or'otherscription, in yconnection with'the accompanywise form the plate 11, the mouthpieces 8 and 5 5 ing drawings, is a specification, like numerals 9, and the branch stem 6all in one piece. Since on the drawings representing like parts. the stem 6 merely sits in the enlarged bore of that class wherein `the necessary suction for piece or cowl structure can be turned about drawing the foul air from the 'interior of the said stem as an axis and made to face toward 60 car is produced by the movementof the car either end of the car. i

Fig. tion, so that the air in the car will be drawn 2O 2-is a top plan View of the swiveled double lthrough the perforations in the pipe 3 and mouthpiece of the ventilator. Fig. Sis asec- 4out through the mouthpieces. To hold the tion `through the top of the car on the line mouthpiece in either adjusted position, I have 70 Fig.v 1.y Fig. L is a modification; and Fig. 5 provided the platell at each end with a catch is asection through the roof of the car and on 16, and lI place coperating'latches 17 on the an enlarged scale, showing further details of top of the car. With this construction the construction. i mouthpiece may be swung in to face either 3 designatesa pipe which extends longitudirection, and when in proper position one of 75 dinally of the car on its interior and which is the latches 17 will automatically engage the preferably situated near the top of the car, corresponding catch'16', and thus hold said where the impure air accumulates; This pipe mouthpiece properly positioned. The latches is open to the interior of the car, preferably are shown as having knobs or thumb-pieces by making it perforated, as best shown in Fig. 18 thereon by means of which they may be 8O 5, and at one or more places it extends through released. the roof of the car. Swiveled to each exposed 19 designates a damper situated in the stem end of the pipeis a vacuum or suction moutho f the mouthpiece. This damper is' mounted piece or cowl, which operates to create the on a rock-shaft 20, which is suitably journaled necessary suction during movement of the ear. in the thimble and which has extending from In this embodiment of my invention the pipe its end the arms 22, from each of which de- 3 is screwed into an ordinary T 4, which in pends an operating-cord 21. These cords pass 4 0 turn is screwed into athimble 5, which passes through the roof of the car, so that they can through the car-roof. The upper end of the be operated fromthe interior thereof. A pull thimble is provided with an enlarged bore, on one of the cords will open the damper, which receives the stern 6A of the vacuumwhile a pull on the other cord will close the mouthpiece, said stem resting upon a suitable damper, as will be obvious from an inspection rial. I prefer to employ the double mouth- To permit the stem 6 to turn in the thimble, piece or cowl, (best illustrated in Fig. 2,) I provide said stem with a slot extending parwhich-comprises the two mouthpieces 8 and tially about the same, through which slot the rock-shaft 20 extends, said slot permitting a free turning movement of the stem without disturbing the damper.
I have herein shown each of the pipes 8 as having a mouthpiece connected thereto at each end thereof, said mouthpieces being situated at opposite ends of the car. One or more pipes 3 with its mouthpieces may be emi ployed, according to the size and speed of the car. I have herein illustrated two such pipes, one at each side of the car at its upper end, and each pipe has a mouthpiece at each end thereof, as described above. The pipes and ventilator may be located in any convenient position on the top of the car.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a slightly-different form of mouthpiece, wherein the plate 11 is circular instead of rectangular, as shown in Fig. 3. In other respects the modification shown in Fig. 4 is the same as the construction already described.
In the operation of the device the rapid movement of the car through the air causes a partial vacuum to be formed in each mouthpiece, with the result that the air is drawn from the interior of the car through the perforations in the pipe 3 and out through the mouthpieces. Since the heated impure air always rises to the top of the ear, it follows that with my ventilator it is possible to take such air out of the car as fast as it rises to the top thereof, with the result that the air in the car may be kept absolutely pure.
Various changes may be made in the construction of the device without departing from the invention expressed in the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a car-ventilator, a perforated pipe extending longitudinally-of the car on its interior, a thimble secured to said pipe and extending vertically through the car-roof, a horizontally-arranged suction mouthpiece or cowl having a vertical stem or neck which is swivel'ed to Said thimble, a pivoted damper supported by said thimble and situated within the stem or neck, and means on the interior of the car for operating said damper.
2. In a car-Ventilator, a perforated pipe extending longitudinally of the car on its interior, a thimble secured to said pipe and extending vertically through the car-roof, a horizontally-arranged suction mouthpiece or cowl having a vertical stem or neck which sets into the upper end of the thimble and is swivelcd thereto, and a damper for the cowl, said damper operating to hold the cowl from vertical movement with reference to the thimble.
3. In a car-Ventilator, a thimble passing through the car-roof, a suction mouthpiece or cowl, having a vertical stem or neck, which sets into the upper end of the thimble and is swiveled therein, apivoted damper within said Stem, said damper having a stem extending through a slot in the cowl-stem whereby the cowl may be turned.
4. In a car-ventilator, a thimble [ixcdly secured to and passing through the car-roof, a suction mouthpiece or cowl having a Vertical stem or neck setting into the upper end of the thimble and supported thereby for turning movement, a damper within the neck of the cowl, or mouthpiece,'said damper having a stem extending through a circumferential slot in the neck of the cowl and through an aperture of the thimble.
5. In a car-ventilator` a cowl comprising a plate having two apertures, two cone-shaped suction-mouthpieces extending laterally from said plate, said mouthpieces being alined with said apertures and cach having communication with a Vertical cowl stem or neck, and a thimble extending through ,the car-roof and to which said neck is swiveled,
6. In a car-ventilator, a cowl comprising a plate having two apertures, two cone-shaped suction-mouthpieces extending laterally from said plate, said mouthpieces being alined with said apertures and each having communication with a vertical cowl stem or neck, a thimble extending through the car-roof and to which said neck is swiveled, and a locking-lug scoured to said plate, and a locking-latch on the car-roof to cooperate with said lug and hold the cowl in its adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT S. LAWRENCE.
