PATENT O FICE.
CHARLES L. HOLT, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
EXPANSION-JOINT FOR SOIL-PIPES.
SPECIFIGATTON forming part of Letters Patent 1\ T0. 760,790, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed August 21, 1903.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, CHARL S Hour, of Lawrence, county'of Essex, State of Massachusett's, have invented an- Improvement .in Expansion-Joints for Soil-Pipes,.6f which-the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification,
Suitable or convenient means.
like characters on the drawings representing like parts. I
in flat-roof buildings it is customary. to provide a rain-water box in the middle'of the roof,-toward whichpoint the roofis made to slope, and this box is connected to the sewer by the soil-pipes which run through the building. Considerable difficulty has been encountered in forming a water-tight joint between these rain-water boxes and the soil-pipe, and these connections often become broken by frost, settling of the building, and from other causes. f
The object of my invention is toprovide a form of expansion-joint between a rain-water box and a soil-pipe which may be made to be perfectly tight at all times and which will enable an iron or earthen soil-pipe which is not provided with a hub to be employed in making a connection between a rain-water box and the pipe below, thereby enabling the cutoff ends of otherwise worthless soil-pipe to be employed. g
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of anexpansion-joint made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudi nal section thereof on the line y 3/ of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line a: w of Fig. 1.
The rain-water box a is provided with a metal outlet-pipe a, and a metal pipe I), of brass or other suitable material, is connected thereto by a coupling-ring m or any other A piece of soil-pipe a is provided from which the hub has been removed, so that its upper end portion is uniform, the internal diameter of said pipe being greater than the external diameter of pipe I), and a coupling-sleeve d is placed on the upper end thereof. Said sleeve is provided with an inwardly-projecting annular flanged at its upper end, which is adapted to rest upon the upper end of the soil-pipe and project a short distance beyond the inner Serial a... 170,242. (No model.)
will fit easily over the outer side of the soilj pipe 0. Said sleeve may be secured in place on. the soil-pipe by set-screws e or any other suitable means. ,A gland f is-fitted on pipe babove the sleeve, said gland being provided with the usual depending flange, which is adapted to fit into the chamber 03 in whicha Y suitable packing material is provided. A
gland g is fitted on soil-pipe 0 below the chamber "0Z Aseries of bolts 32 pass through the outer flanges of the glands f and whereby they may be drawn together and clamped to the sleeve by means of nuts on said bolts, each gland being thereby-drawn against the packing contained in its corresponding chamber, making a tight joint at these points.
The lower end of the pipe Z) is preferably provided with three radially-projecting lugs Z), and the edge portion of the flange d is provided with corresponding recesses 0Z through which said lugs may be passed.
In assembling the parts the sleeve (Z is secured in position with its flange d resting on theupper end of the soil-pipe 0, with the gland g in position below it, and the pipe 5 is passed into the pipe 0, its lugs Z2 being passed through the recess d of the flange d and the pipe 6 then being turned, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, so that said lugs are moved out of register with the recess 03 The gland f is then passed on overthe upper end of the pipe bfand the latter is then connected to the discharge end of the rain-box. The recesses d and 03* having been filled with a suitable packing, the glands f and g are drawn toward each other, making a tight joint between the pipe Z) and the soil-pipe c. 7 The pipe [2 extends into the pipe c sufliciently to permit the former to be withdrawn from the latter as much as may be necessary to compensate for probable variations be.-
sleeve, said gland fitting into the packingtween the end of pipe 0 and the rain-water box. In case the pipes Z) and ,0 should separate to such an extent that the former would be withdrawn from the latter then the lugs 6 on the pipe 6 will engage the flange d and prevent such separation, and the sleeve (Z would then slip upon the soil-pipe 0, the set-screws e being loosened after the joint is completed to permit such movement.
By this means a simple form of water-tight expansion-joint is provided which may be quickly connected and will permit of sufficient relative movement of the connected pipes to meet all requirements.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.- A pipe connection for the purpose described comprising two telescoping pipes, a coupling-sleeve on the largerpipe having an inwardly-projecting, annular flange at its upper end within which the smaller pipe is fitted, said flange being adapted to rest on the upper end of the larger pipe and having an annular packing-chamber in its upper side next the smaller pipe, a gland for said chamber on the latter, said sleeve having an annular packingehamber in its lower end next the larger pipe,
a gland therefor on the latter and means for drawing said glands together, to force them into their respective chambers, substantially as described.
2. A joint for connecting two telescoping pipes comprising a coupling-sleeve fitted on the outer side of the larger pipe and having an inwardly-projecting annular flange engaging the end thereof, and into which the smaller pipe is fitted, said flange having one or more notches at its edge and an annular packingchamber on its outer side, corresponding lugs on the end of said smaller pipe adapted to pass through said notches, a gland fitted on said latter pipe and entering said chamber, said sleeve having a packing-chamber at its opposite end from said flange, a gland therefor fitted on said larger pipe and means for clamping said glands to said sleeve, substantially as described. g
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
