Be it known that. I, EDWARD G; HAMILTON,
a citizen'of theUnited States, residing in the city of Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Mail and Packm age Carrying Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1 i I Y The invention. relates to electric mail and package carrying devices adapted to travel in either direction on and in connection with combined carrying or supporting and current-carrying wires in combination with suit- I able switches, cut-outs, and terminals.
The invention has for its object the provi sion of a pair of electric motors adapted to travel in opposite directions and by means of suitable gearings adapted to'rotate traction wheels for the purpose of propelling the mecl1 anism upon vtrack-wires suspended between the points between which the device is intend; ed to operate. a v Another object is the provision of an elec-.

8 5 p i Fig. 2 shows an end elevation there 1 -A represents the platform or carriage, which supports the various-mechanisms. On the upper surface of the center of the carriage A is secured the switch B, which is adapted to be operated by the horizontal sliding bar C. The
bar C is adapted to slide in slots provided in 'the posts D and D near their upper ends.
The center of the bar 0 is provided with an opening to receiveloosely the handle E of the switch-arm F in order that the arm F may be thrown either forward or backward by the lateral movements of the bar C. p
G, H, and I represent the three' terminals of the switch, with. wires J, K, and L, respectively, leading therefrom through the carriage A to various points, as will hereinafter be described.
By the above it will be seenthat the wire J may be connected with either of the wires K or L bythe movement of the bar C.
M and N represent two oppositely-disposed electric motors with their bases abutting and secured together by the screws 0 and P. The motorsM'and N, secured together as shown, are suspended and secured underneath the center of the carriage A by the four hangers Q. Said hangers Q each consists of'a perpendicular portion secured atthe top in the carriage A and secured to the yokes of the motors by screws 64. The shafts b and b of the armatures of the motors are journaled in the hangers Q between the respective screws a, as shown in Fig. 1. Extending out from each of the hangers Q are the arms Q, Fig. 1,'the outer ends of which are provided with bearings for the axles R and R. Said axles Band B extend across the'devic'e underneath the carriage A, as shown in Fig. 2, and their outerends are provided with concave-face traction-wheels S, which are adapted to revolve on the track-wires, as will hereinafterbe explained. Attached to opposite ends of the shafts b and 6. are gear-wheels T, and attached to each of the shafts R and R are larger gear-wheels U, which latter are adapted to mesh with the respective gear-wheels T and be revolved thereby.
- The motors M and N should be operatively constructed in any well-known manner and arranged in juxtaposition substantially as shown. The wire K, leading from the terminal H, is connected to the brush of the motor M. The wire L, leading from the terminal I, is connected to the brush of the motor N. The wire J, leading from the terminal G, is connected to oneof the traction wheels S, which Wheel and the one traveling on the same wire are insulated'from their respective shafts R and R, to which they are permanently secured. The wire 0 leads from the motor M to-the screw P, and the wire d leads from the motor N to the screw P, where the two wires '0 and d are united by said screw P.
Vand Xrepresent the track-wires, the wire V being negative and-the wire X being positive. The two wires V and X are suspended between two points between which my device is intended to operate. Near each of the terminals' of thetrack-wires' Iprovide bumpers 'Zto engage the respective ends of the bar C.
For instance, the conditions being as above stated, the switch being arranged to connect weather or dust.
Extending down from the screw P is a stationary hook 2, adapted to engage in the bail 3 of the mail-receptacle 4, or the bail 3 may be connected to the motors direct, if desired. The receptacle 4 is in the form of a scoop with a'level bottom and with sides extending upward therefrom at right angles thereto, and the bail 3 is secured to the centers of the sides of the receptacle and extends across from one to the other of the sides. The ends of the receptacle are left open inorder to receive an arm provided with a stationary brush (not shown) to push the mail or package from the receptacle, which arm and brush may extend out between and below the track-wires from where they are secured near the batteryterminal.
This invention is also intended to be used in large buildings for transporting mail, packages, or other articles to various parts thereof, or it may 'be used between two buildings, if desired.
My improvements are perfectly adapted to accomplish the results and objects for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made and that analogous parts may be used to accomplish the same results without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of its many advantages.
I wish it understood that I do not dedicate any part of my invention to the public and that I wish adequate and just protection for every feature of the device herein shown and described that is new and useful and which involves invention.
Havingnow fully shown and described my invention and the best mode for its construction and use to me known at this time, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination with the track-wires, and the carrying device, provided with wheels adapted to engage said wires, of motors for propelling the said carrying device, means for alternately energizing the said motors including a switch, uprights secured to the said carrying device and being formed in their upper ends with slots, a bar slidably mounted in the openings of the said uprights and bewith means arranged adjacent the track-wire v at its terminals, t e frames of said motors having'their ends abutting and secured together by screws, and a stationary hook sus pended on one of said screws, substantially as and for the purpose specified, I In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
