RATCHETVV-VWRENCH.
sPEo IFmA'noN forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,766, dated May 24, 1904. Applisatibn filed NovaxnbefBO,1903 Serial No. 183,259, (No modeLX T all l who m/ may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. SWILLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pavo,
.inv the county. of Thomas and State of Georgia,
have invented --a'- new and I useful Ratchet Wrench, of which the following is aspecifica- This invention relates to ratchet-wrenches,
. In the drawings illustratlve of the inven tion, in which corresponding partsare denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is'a side elevation, and Fig.2 is an end elevation, of the implement complete. Fig. 3 is a view similar-to Fig. 1 with the cap member removed. "Fig. 4; is a transverse section on the line 4: 4 of Fig. 1." Fig.5 is .a sectional detail on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6is a transverse section on. the line 6 6 of Fig. 1 of the head member with the wrench-head removed.
Theimproved wrench comprises an annular head 10, having a lateral handle 11 and provided with reversely-disposed tangential recesses 12 13, opening into the interior and also through the exterior ofopposite faces, with the inner ends of the recesses in transverse alinement, as shown. Fitting into these recesses are reversely-disposed pawls 14 15, pivoted at their inner ends by a single pin 16 and 'yieldingly supported at their free ends. by
when required, I
Mounted for rotation in the annular head 10 is a socket-head for engaging the nut or other object to be actuated,'the same consisting of spaced members 23 24, having central apertures, preferably of different sizes, for engaging the 'nut and with lateral flanges 2,5 26 extending over the adjacent faces of the annular head .and connected through the la t' ter by two reversely-disposed ratchet members 27 28, separated centrally by "a circular .combined'dividing and bearingdisk 29, as shown.-
7 The parts 27 28, and 29 are coupled together and also to the socket member 2ftby screws or rivets 30, while the socket member 23 is secured to the outer ratchet member 27, as by Screws 31, as shown in Fig, 5, by which means the parts are not only firmly united and readily separable when required, but are mounted for rotation in the annular head 10 in position for the pawls 14 15 to be engaged, respectively,
.with the ratchet members 27 28. The hearing member 29 thus serves a twofold purp0se first, as a means forsuppor'ting the socket-head concentrically in the annular head 10 and also as a spacer to prevent interference between the pawls 14 15.
y The apertures for the nuts or other objects will beextended through the parts 27 28 29,
as shown, and may be of the same size and shape throughout or of different sizes ateach side, as may be preferred.
Cover-plates32 will be attached to the handle 11 to closethe. exposed portions of the recesses 1213 and provide a finish to the implement as well as a protection to the pawls. By this simple arrangement a very compact simply constructed ratchet wrench is produced which may bequickly reversed With-.
out removing from the nut or other object by merely rotating the thumb-nuts 21 or 22, as the case may be.. v To provide for reaching otherwise inaccessi ble points, an elongated supplemental socket member 33 is provided for insertion in the socket-head and which may be provided with diigerent-sized nut-engaging apertures in its en s.
Having difierent-sized nut-engaging apertures in the members 23 24: and different-sized apertures in the ends of the'supplemental socket, a relatively wide range of nuts of different sizes may be actuated by the same wrench.
The implement may be manufactured in different sizes, as required, and maybe modifled in minor particulars without departing from the principle of the invention orisacriflcing any of its advantages.
A set-screw 34 will be tapped through the portion 24, as shown, to hold the'supplemental wrenchhead 33 in position. v
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a wrench, an annular head havingre verSely-disposed recesses openingintothe interior of'the'head, and likewise outwardly throughits opposite faces, reversely-disposed spring-controlled pawls movably disposed in said recesses,'a socket member mounted for rotation upon said head and having flanges extending over its opposite faces and provided with reversely-disposed ratchet-rims for alternativev engagement by said pawls, and cover-plates for closing the exposed portions of said recesses, substantially as described. v
2. In a wrench, an annular head, reverselydisposed pawls movably mounted for alternative action in said head, a socket member mounted for rotation in said head and having reversely-disposed ratchet-rims for alterna tive engagement by said pawls, springs disposed to yieldably hold said pawls in operative position, and threaded rods connected with said-pawls and provided with nuts whereby the pawls may be independently maintained out of action, substantially as described.
3. In a wrench, an annular head, reverselydisposed pawls movably mounted for alternative action in said head, a socket member formed of spaced members having central apertures for the reception of the nut to be actuated and provided with lateral flanges extending over the adjacent faces of the annular head and with reversely-disposed ratchetrims disposed between the spaced socket members within the annular head in position to be alternatively engaged by said pawls, substantially as described.
4. In a wrench, an annular-head having reversely-disposed recesses opening into the in terior of the head, and outwardly through its opposite faces, reversely-disposed spring-controlled pawls movably disposed in said recesses, a socket member mounted for rotation upon said head and having flanges extending over its opposite faces and provided with reversely-disposed ratchet-rims for alternative engagement by said pawls.
5. In a wrench, an annular head, reverselydisposed pawls movably mounted for alternative action in said head, socket members mounted for rotation upon said head and having flanges extending over its opposite faces, reversely-disposed independent ratchet-rims mounted between said socket members and having a spacing-rim disposed between them, screws extending through said rims and engaging one of said socket members, and fastening means extending through one of said socket members and engaging one of said ratchet-rims.
6. In a wrench, a head having a circular seat which is open at opposite ends and closed throughout its periphery, a ratchet-disk rotatably mounted within the seat and provided with an intermediate external annular flange having a working fit within the seat of the head, the periphery of the ratchet member being provided with reversely-disposed annular series of ratchet-teeth at opposite sides of the flange, reversely-disposed pawls carried by the head and cooperating with the respective series of ratchet-teeth on the ratchet member, and socket members secured to opposite sides of the ratchet member for rotation therewith and provided with annular flanges bearing against the respective ends of the head to prevent displacement of the ratchet member and the socket members.
7. In a wrench, an annular head having a recess communicating with the interior of the head, a ratchet member rotatably mounted within the head and provided with a nut-receiving socket, a pawl pivoted in the recess and cooperating with the ratchet member, a rod connected to the pawl and working through the outer edge of the head, a spring to yieldably hold the pawl at its inner limit, and means connected to the outer projected end of the rod for drawing the same outwardly to disengage the pawl from the ratchet member. 8. In a wrench, an annular head having a recess communicating with the interior thereof, a ratchet member rotatable within the head and provided with a nut-receiving socket, a pawl mounted in the recess and engaging the ratchet member, a rod connected to the pawl and working endwise through the head, the outer projected end of the rod being threaded, a spring encircling the rod and bearing against the pawl and theback of the recess, and an adjusting-nut carried by the projected screw-threaded end of the rod and bearing against the head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL A. SVVILLEY.
