Be it known that I, AXEL H. WOLYN, a citizen ofthe United States, anda resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Vapor-l Generators, of which the following-is a full,
clear, and exact description.
The present inventionr has, relation more particularly to that class of vapor-generators designed for use in'hydrocarbon lightin, g` and heating systems. In such systemsithas heretoi'ore been proposed to vaporize the hydrol carbon (usually gasolene) b y passing it through a generator'containing porous o r granular material adapted to effect a large 'surface eX'- vposure of the hydrocarbon, `this generator being subjected to heat in order to eifect the vaporization ofthe hydrocarboniluid .An .objection incident vto the variousk devices heretofore used in vaporizing or generating'gas from gasolene or like liquid hydro`-' carbon is that the porous, granular, OI" like material within the generator is apt to become coked, so that its efli'ciency is impaired and its removal from, the generator is effected with much difliculty. l
One object of the present inventionis to provide for the porous, granular',` or like material through which the hydrocarbon isto be passedwliile being subjected to heat a holder or retaining casing forming, as it were,

As shown, the casing E is provided with a needle-valve E for regulating the flow of vapor, although manifestly any other suitable form of valve may be used for this purpose, and the stem of this needlevalve E is fitted with a suitable handle e', whereby the valve maybe conveniently op- IO erated.
From the vapor or gas supply pipe H is tapped a branch pipe K, (preferably provided with a regulating-cock h) by which gas will be led to the generator-burner M beneath the generator B.
From the foregoing description the operation of my invention will beseen to be as follows, viz: The liquid hydrocarbon admitted by the supply-pipe A will pass by the inner 2O end of the holder or casing C to the-porous or granular material contained therein. In practice I have employed fine gravel, brass filings, or like material within the holder or. casing C, although manifestly particles of glass, porce- 2 5 lain, intertwisted wires, or any other suitable the chamber F in manner well understood.
After the initial generation of the gas is thus effected a certain amount of gas will pacs by pipe K to the generator-burner M, and by means of this burner a continued heating of the generator will be effected'. f
When the porous or granular material within' the holder or easing C becomes eoked or clogged after considerable usage, the holder or casing C Will be withdrawn and a fresh cartridge-z'. e., a fresh holder or casing loaded with granular or porous materialwill be inserted in the generator. By this means it becomes'unnecessary for the unskilled user of the systen to clean the generator, since the cartridges will be supplied to the user in convenient number and may be refilled at any convenient times,
' A further advantage incident to the use of a removable holder or-casing for the porous or granular material is that this material may be uniformly and closely packed before the holder or casing is inserted into the generator. In practice it has-been found that if pockets or open spaces be allowed within the generator they tend to produce a variable and unequal quality of gas, resulting in a flickering of the burners, that is highly objectionable.
The feature of providing the tubular casing or cartridge with means whereby it may be withdrawn from the generator-chamber is one of marked advantage, because if the tubular casing were not provided with such means it would be impossible to withdraw it from the generator-chamber, since the coking of the hydrocarbon about the joints of the casing would prevent itswithd rawal. By providing the tubular casing with the screwthreaded plug at one end, this plug being the preferable means for effecting the withdrawal of the casing, the turning of the plug necessarily turns and loosens the casing, so that it maybe-withdrawn by the plug from the gencrater-chamber.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1; In apparatus of the character described, a cartridge for the vapor-generator comprising a tubular casing having a granular or equivalent filling, said casing being open adjacent its ends for the passage therethrough of vapor and being provided at 011e end with a head whereby said casing may be turned and having at its opposite end means carried by the casing to prevent the escape of the granular material therefrom.
2. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a generator provided at one end with a port for admitting liquid hydrocarbon thereto and provided at its opposite end with a port for the discharge of vaporized'hydrocarbon therefrom and a removable tubular casing adapted to fit snugly within said generator, said casing having a filling of granular or equivalent material and having openings connecting respectively with the delivery-port and with the discl'large-port of the generator-chamber, whereby the vaporized hydrocarbon will be caused to pass through said casing, said casing being provided at its outer end with a head whereby the casing can be withdrawn from the generator-chamber.
3. In apparatus of the character described, the combination of a generator having a hori- Zontally-arranged chamber provided at one end witha port for admitting liquid hydrocarbon thereto and provided at its opposite end with a port for the discharge of'vaporized hydrocarbon therefrom, and a lemovable tubular casing having a filling of granular or equivalent material, said casing being open at the end adjacent the admission-port of the generator-chamber and being provided adjacent the discharge-port of the generatorchamber with a lateral opening and being provided at its outer end with means whereby the casing can be withdrawn from the generator-chamber.
4. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with a generator having a horizontally-disposed chamber provided at its IlO threaded'plug for engaging the threaded outer end; ofI the generator-chamber.
5. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a generator'having a chamber provided at one end With a port for the admission of liquid hydrocarbon and provided adjacent its opposite 'end ivithalateral port for the discharge oi' vaporized hydrocarbon, Asaid generator being provided also With a channelY extending lengthwise of said generator from the discharge-portof said chamber to the inner end of the generator'and a removable tubularv casing located Within said chamber and provided With a porous fi-lling, said tubular casing having openings opposite the admission and discharge ports of said chamber and having at its outer end meansfwhereby it may be Withdrawn from said chamber.
