'FRANCISB CONTESSA, OF NEWMYQRK, N. Y.
Latem Patent No. 76,054, ma March 31, ieee.
dige tlgthule raamt tu in time trttets ttcnt :tut mating gattini its same.
'ro ALL WHoM IT MAY CONCERNE Be it known that I, FRANCAIS B. CONTEsSA, of' the city, county, and State oi New York, have inventerla new and improved Weltng or Cowling-Attachment to' Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make andusc' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in sewing-machines, whereby the machineis'adapted to work which' has hitherto (frompits peculiar nature) been performed by hand; and the invention consists in attaching tothe ordinary foot-pad bar a curved roller, and-in adjusting thereon an' elastic ring, whereby the machineis adapted Y to the process of ccrding and welting generally, and especially to stitching or sewingon of the lace or braid on shoulder-straps and chevrons in military work, thereby' saving much valuable `time.
Figure Lrepresentsa front viewcf -a portion ofV a Singer sewing-machine, and Figure 2 represents a side View of the same, on both of which my improvement is seen attached as for use. Similar letters of reference indicate vcmresponding parts.
As the part of the sewing-machine shown (or its equivalent) is common to all sewing-machines, nopar ticular description of that part is deemed necessary.
My improvement is' applicable to all ordinary machines, as it merely takes the place of the foot-pad, with which' all sewing-machines are provided.
A (figs. l and 2) represents the foot-pad bar. B isa bracket, attached thereto by a set-serew, (or otherwise,) either permanently or detachable, as may be' desired. C is a curvedroller, which is attached to the bracket by a pivot or journal, and secur'ed thereon by a screw-nut, or in any suit-able manner. As seen in fig. 1, the bracket extends forward so as to allow the centre of the roller C to come opposite or nearly opposite the needle, as represented. The bracket is so att-ached to the bar A, and the' rollis so` adjusted, that the needle passes its lower edge nearly in contact with it, so that the stitching maybe done directly at the base of the cord. The Curve 1,011 the in side of the roller, is designed to fit or nearly iit the diameter cf the 'corded work, so as to present an arc of a circle which Vshall conform in some measure to the size oi' the welt formed.
These rollers :ma-y be made of different sizes, and changed to suit di`erent-sized cords, if desired. The periphery of the roller may be milled oir-serrated, if desired, for the purpose of producing the requisite friction, or enabling it to take a riner hold of the work. But, as shown in the drawing, fig. 2, I accomplish this object by placing on the neck of the roller an elastic band or thimble, e, which may be made of any size or shape, to adapt it to the purpose intended. As before stated, the roller C is removable at pleasure freni the bracket, and the elastic thimble may be changed as often as required by the nature ot' the work.
The needle N is attached to the needle-bar, in the manner usual with the Singer machine, by the claniplj, but the clamp is elongated or extends down further than usual for the purpose of more firmly supporting the needle. v
This eording or welting has hitherto beendone by hand. By the use-of my improvement the work is performed with the greatest facility and dispatch, the saving thereby being equal t-o that secured by machinesewing generally.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and. desire to secure by' Letters Patent- 1, The combination, withv the presser-bar A, of the bracket B and roller C, constructed, arranged, and
Voperating with the sewing-machine, as and-for the purpose set forth.
2. The elastic thimble or band e, in combination with the roll C, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. i
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this thrtieth day o f January, 1868.
' FRANc'rs B. coN'rEssA.
