SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,497, dated May 24, 1904.

Be it known thatI, CHRISTIAN THOMA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Turning Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to metal-turning machines, being particularly adapted as a turning attachment for use in connection with a milling-machine, but may be operated in connection with other machines or may be operated as an independent machine.
The object of the invention is to provide a device which will operatively carry both the roughing and the finishing cutters, to provide means for separately adjusting said cutters, and to provide an adjustable guide-block for holding the work, and certain other details of construction and arrangement hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the base or head of my attachment upon which the tools are mounted in operative position and the adjacent parts of a milling-machine partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a transverse Fig. 4 is a sectional View on on the line as 00, Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base of the machine, upon which my device is mounted, said base being the table of a milling-machine.
The work to be operated upon (shown in the drawings as an axle) is placed in the hollow spindle 2 in the head of the milling-machine and clamped therein by the chuck 2' on the inner end thereof.
2 is the base or head of my attachment, upon which the tools are mounted. This head 2 is provided at one side with a back-rest 3, which is adjustable laterally of the head 2, and at the other side with a tool-carrier 4., likewise adjustable laterally of the head 2. As is common in machines of this class, the head 2 comprises a base 5, provided at the bottom with a dovetail foot 6, extending longitudinally of such base 5 andadapted to lit in a dovetail groove 7 in the table 1 of the machine to prevent lateral movement of the head 2. In my Serial No. 98,982. (No model.)
machine the base 5 also has a longitudinal groove 8 111 its upper surface immediately over the foot 6 and near each end in such upper surface two dovetailed grooves 9, extending across suchsurface. The base 5 is also provided with end walls 10, rising therefrom, which have transverse recesses 10 in their inner faces and in one of which, in alinement with the groove 8, there is an opening 11, into which the work held in the spindle of the milling-machine projects, and the other end wall 10 has a projection 12 on its exterior surface, preferably cylindrical in form and which is adapted for insertion into a complementary opening 2 in the turret 2" and is secured by set-screws to prevent longitudinal movement of the head 2.
The back-rest 3 in the form shown its at the ends in the recesses 10 and is provided on the bottom with dovetail slides 3 complementary to the dovetail grooves 9, in which they slide, and with a central lug 3, interiorly screw threaded. The back -rest 3 has a horizontal longitudinal recess 3" in its inner face in which guide-block 13 is adapted to be mounted. Set-screws 14: extend through the upper and front portions of the back-rest 3 and project into the recess 3 to secure the guide-block 13 in place. Secured to the base 5 is a block 5", having an opening therethrough in alinement with the screw-threaded opening in the lug 3. Ashaft 15 passes through the opening in the block 5, wherein it is secured against longitudinal movement by a pin 16, which passes through the block 5 and rests in a groove extending around the shaft 15. The outer end of the shaft 15 is provided with means of rotating it, herein shown as a handwheel 17 and has its inner end screw-threaded complementary to the screw-threaded opening in the lug 3.
The guide-block 13 preferably has a groove in its outer face to receive the work the bet ter to hold it in place and has its rear portion fitted to slide in the recess 3*.
The tool-carrier 4 consists of two parts 4: and 4", one carrying the roughing-cutters 18 and the other the finishing-cutters 19. The device may be used for many forms; but for the purpose of the illustration I have selected the shaping of the spindle on an axle end. In the form shown the lower part 4 fits at the ends in the recesses 10 and is provided on the bottom with dovetail slides 4 complementary to the dovetail grooves 9, in which they slide, and witha central lug 1 interiorly screw-threaded. The said lower part 4 in the form shown is also provided with a horizontal longitudinal slot 41 having its central outer portion closed by the wall f. Setscrews 20 pass through the upper portion of the lower part 4: and the wall 4: and project into the slot 4 to secure the finishing-cutters.

Secured to the base 5 is a block 21, having an opening therethrough in alinement with the screw-threaded opening in the lug i A shaft 22 passes through the opening in the block 21, wherein it is secured against longitudinal movement by a pin 23, which passes through the block 21 and rests in a groove extending around the shaft 22. The outer end of the shaft 22 is provided with means of rotating it, herein shown as a handwheel 21, and has its inner end screw-threaded complementary to the screw-threaded opening in the lug 1. The upper part at" has an outer horizontal portion 4 and an inner downwardly-inclined portion 4;. The inclined portion 1 has a longitudinal slot 41 therethrough and on outer surface near the ends two blocks Q, the lower faces of which are substantially vertical. Set-screws 25 extend through the upper portion of the inclined portion 1 and project into the slot i to secure the roughing-cutters 18 in place. Suitable means are provided for securing the upper part 4 to the lower part 1. Such means in the form shown consist in providing the upper part 4" at one end with a plurality of spaced perforated ears 4:, adapted to receive between them similar spaced perforated cars 4 provided at one end of the lower part 4: and passing a pin a through the perforations. The lower part 1 is provided at the other end with two spaced standards 4 having registering openings 4 in their upper ends and adapted to receive between them the free end of the upper part 4., where the same is secured by a wedge shaped pin 1 passing through the openings 4 At each end of the tool-carrier 4 guides 26 are provided, which slide on top of the walls 10. A pair of stop-plates 27 is provided at each end of the back-rest 3. The stopplates 27 are slotted longitudinally, and'adjusting-screws 28 pass through such slots and are secured in the top of the back-rest 3. The adjusting-screws 28 preferably have square heads, and between their heads and the stopplates 27 washers 29 are placed. The ends of the inner stop-plates 27 are adapted to abut against the blocks F and gage the roughing cutting and the outer pair of stop-plates 27 to abut against the ends of the guides 26 and gage the finishing cutting.
Suitable cutters are provided. In the form shown for shaping the spindle on the end of an axle the roughing-cutters 18 comprise a central cutter for roughly shaping the cylindrical portion of such spindle and separate cutters for the end which is to receive the axle-nut and the shouldered portion adjacent to the body of the axle. These roughingcutters 18 are provided with suitable cutting faces 18 and with shank portions 18", adapted to pass through the slot 4 where after being properly adjusted they are secured by the set-screws 25. The central cutter has its outting-face 18 divided into a series of spaced cutting-points 18 to lessen the resistance. In the form shown the roughing-cutters 18 have their shanks inclined at an angle to their cuttingfaces 18; but they may, if desired, be made straight. In the form shown the finishing-cutters 19 comprise likewise a central cutter for the cylindrical portion of the spindle, having a straight edge and separate cutters for the end of the spindle which is to receive the axle-nut and for the shouldered portion adjacent to the body of the axle. The finishing-cutters 19 are provided with suitable cutting-faces 19* and with shank portions 19".
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated.
The end of the rod of which the axle is to be formed is inserted through the opening 11 and placed in the groove in the guide-block 13 and the rough cutters 18 having been properly adjusted and the upper and lower parts of the tool-carrier 1 firmly secured by the wedge-shaped pin L and the inner pair of the index-plates 27 properly set, the work is rotated, as hereinbefore described, by the spindle of the milling-machine, in which it is clamped. The tool-carrier 4, which has no rotative movement, is moved up as required by the hand-wheel 24:, the back-rest 3 being likewise moved forward by the hand-wheel 17 to hold the work against the rough-cutters 18 until the inner pair of the stop-plates 27 abut against the blocks F. When the roughingcutters finish their work, then the outer pair of stop-plates 27 are set, the wedge shaped pin 4 withdrawn, the upper part 4:" lifted and turned back, so as to throw the roughing-cutters out of action, and the finishing-cutters 19 having been adjusted the work continues until the outer pair of stop plates 27 abut against the guides 26, when the spindle will have been properly shaped. The set-screws 1 1, passing through the front portion of the back-rest 3, serve to hold the guide-block 13 against the tendency to slide backward, as the set-screws 20, passing through the block 4:, do the central of the finishing-cutters 19.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A turning attachment provided with means for attaching it to a milling-machine and comprising a non-pivoted tool-carrier carrying one set of tools and a second tool-carrier pivoted on the first tool-carrier and carrying another set of tools, whereby it can be turned to place the tools thereon out of operative position, substantially as described.
2. A turning attachment provided with means for attaching it to a milling-machine and comprising a non-pivoted lower tool-carrier carrying the finishing-tools and an upper tool-carrier pivoted on the lower tool-carrier and carrying the roughing-tools, whereby it can be turned to place the tools thereon out of operative position, substantially as described.
3. A turning attachment provided with means for attaching it to a milling-machine and comprising a base or head,-a lower nonpivoted tool-carrier carrying one set of tools, an upper tool-carrier pivoted on the lower tool-carrier and carrying another set of tools, whereby it can be turned to place the tools thereon out of operative position, substantially as described.
4:. A turning attachment for milling-mm chines comprising a head having a base pro vided with a dovetail foot adapted to enter a dovetail groove in the table of the millingmachine and with a longitudinal groove and transverse dovetail grooves in its upper sur-' face and also having end walls provided with transverse recesses in their inner surfaces and provided one with an opening to admit the Work and the other with a projection to enter a hole in the turret of the milling-machine, a guide-block carrier fitting in said recesses and provided with dovetail slides complementary to the dovetail grooves and a longitudinal recess in its front face, a guide-block seated in said recess, means of securing the block there in, a tool-carrier comprising a lower part fitting in said recesses and provided with dovetail slides complementary to the dovetail grooves and a horizontal longitudinal slot and an upper part having a horizontal portion connected with the lower part and an inclined portion having a longitudinal slot therethrough, roughing-cutters seated in said inclined slot, means for securing the cutters therein, finishing-cutters seated in the horizontal slot, means for securing such cutters therein, and means for moving the guide-block carrier and the tool-carrier toward each other.
