WILLAM BENNIE, OF BROWNVOOD, TEXAS.
COTTON-PICKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,413, dated May 24, 1904.
Application led February 10, 1904. Serial No. 193,029. (No model.)
To 12J/Z whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BENNIE, a citi- Zen of the United States. residing at Brownwood, in the county of Brown and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Pickers; and I do declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful irnprovements in pneumatic apparatus for conveying cotton when picked from the plant, and comprises a suction-'fan and casing therefor, which latter has pipes through which air is drawn and which are carried by a cottonpicker and attached to his or her wrist convenient to the hands of a picker, whereby as a boll of cotton is detached from the bur oi' a plant it may be drawn into the pipe and conveyed to a wagon or other receptacle carrying the fan.
My invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then speciiically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig-ure l is a perspective View showing the application o1c my device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the casing in which the suction-fan is mounted.. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the motor-casing and fan lengthwise of the axis oi'. the fan. Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the casing. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one or' the suction-pipes. Fig. 6 is across-sectional view through the fan and box.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, Adesignates a motorcasing having a fixed platform A', and O designates a shaft journaled in said casing, and lixed to said shaft is a pulley B, (shown in Figs.
Q and 3 of the dra\vings,)wliereby power may be imparted to a shaft C. One or more fans D are iixed to the shaft inside the casing, and screens O are interposed between the outer portions of the fans and the end walls of the casing, whereby the cotton is prevented from coming' in contact with said fans. Projecting from the opposite ends of the casing is a branching pipe E, having the pipes E', to which ieXible tubing or hose-pipe F is connected, as shown in Fig'. l oi' the drawings. The outer end of each tubing has aiiaring portion H and two eyes K, through which the straps K' may be passed to hold the ends oi' the hose-pipes against the wrists oi the operator, with the iiaring end of each pipe near the hand of the operator in such a position as to immediately be clapped over the end ot' the pipe when not in use.
N N in Figs. 2 and 3 designae exit-apertures through which the cotton-bells which have been sucked through by the motor may be expelled into a receptacle of any suitable kind.
rlhe operation of my apparatus is as follows: A motor is adapted to be carried by a conveyance to which the fan-casing is secured, where by a rotary movement may be imparted to the fan for the purpose of creatingasuction. The operator or operators attach the tubes to their wrists and walk along the rows of cotton, and after a boll of cotton is plucked from the cup or bur in which it grows it is inserted by the operator in the iiaring end of the hose-pipe and suction immediately carries the same to the motor-casing, from which it is expelled through the exit-openings N to any receptacle. By the provision oi' an apparatus embodying the features o'lz my invention it will be observed that cotton may be readily conveyed directly from the plant to a wagon or other receptacle upon which the suction-fan is carried.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pneumatic conveying apparatus compristo hold the flaring ends of said pipes adjacent ing a easing, a shaft journaled therein, fans to the hands of an operator, as set forth. I0 rotating with said shaft, a screen fastened at In testimony whereofl I hereunto aiix my its ends to the inner face of the cylindrical signature in presence of two Witnesses.
