MEANS FOR PROTECTING VAPOR ELECTRIC APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 760,119, dated May 1'7, 1904.
Application filed December 22, 1903. Serial No. 186,187. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER CoornR HEWITT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Protecting Vapor Electric Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
When the container of a gas or vapor electric apparatus is made of glass or like material and contains one or more electrodes of mercury or the like, there is danger of cracking or fracturing the material of the container when the apparatus is carelessly handled either in manufacturing or transportation, sometimes also in the ordinary use of the apparatus.
The present invention is designed to overcome this danger by providing one or more cushions, of asbestos, glass-wool, or similar material, placed in such portions of the apparatus as are peculiarly liable to be injured when it is returned suddenly to the negative electrode by the shifting of the container during transportation or manufacture or under any other circumstances. I may dispose similar masses of asbestos or the like in other parts of the apparatus which seem likely to be injured by the shifting mercury or other conducting'liquid.
The invention is useful in apparatus of this class, whatever he the number of the electrodes, provided that one or more of said electrodes be of mercury or other conducting liquid.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination with a gas or vapor electric apparatus having a body of fragile material and containing one or more liquid electrodes, of one or more cushions as described,
at such point or points in the interior of the apparatus as are especially liable to shock.
2. The combination with a gas or vapor electric apparatus having a body of fragile material and containing one or more electrodes of
