TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it l nown that I, W. W. SUTLIFF, of Town Line, in the-county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented eertainnew andiuseful Improvements in Carriage-Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and-exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to I the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a vehicle with my invention attached, and
Figure 2 a plan of the same, with the body removed.
The nature of this invention consists in the employment of four bars, which act in the capacityof springs; when said bars or springs are arranged in combination with such other devices as will be hereinafter described.-
The advantngesof my method of forming springs for vehicles are, first, its economy second, its simplicity, and consequent ease-with which it can be made, even by the most ordinary mechanic.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction.
A represent the axles, upon which are the wheels B B. O designates a' bolster, secured to the axle B, by means of a. king-bolt, in the usual manner. Upon saidbolster rest the front ends of the perches or rods DJ), than: ends of said perches resting upon the other axle, B. F F indicate four bars or rods, to act in the capncityof springs, which may be bevelled vat their inner ends, to allow them to rest upon the perches at the desired inclination. These springs are provided with metal plates or strips, a a, on their upper sides. These bars are provided with two screwrods, K K, said rods being furnished with nuts, by means of which the bars G G maybe adjusted and held in position. I I designate four screw-bolts, also provided with nuts. Said bolts are inserted in holes in the springs and rods or perches, to keep the springs in place. "J J are cross-bars, attached to the outer ends of the bars or springs. Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Spring-bars F F, provided with metal plates a a, perches D D, arranged in combination with clips E E and bolts c'c, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Theadjustable cross-bars G G, in combination with spring-bars F F. 3. The employment of the screw-rods K K, in. combination with adjustable cross-bars G G and spring-bars FE, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
