MARLINESPIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,717, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed August 15, 1903. Serial No- 169,606. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED KAPPLER, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lake Linden, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Marlinespikes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in spikes for splicing manila, hemp, or other rope; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating the practical use of my improved spike. Fig. 2 is in part a side view and in part a longitudinal section of the same.
My splicing-spike is especially designed for splicing rope used for transmitting power, but may be used for splicing other rope or whenever a marlinespike may be desired.
The spike A has a pointed end A, so it can be readily inserted between the twisted strands of rope, as shown in Fig. 1, and has in its other or butt end the longitudinal bore B, which extends for some distance from the buttend of the spike and then opens at B laterally out of the side of the spike, so the coil end (1 may be inserted through the bore B and out of the lateral opening B and returned along the outer side of the butt-end of the spike, so such end can be readily grasped by the hand for drawing the coil C through the opening formed in the rope by the spike, as will be understood from Fig. l of the drawings. To aid in directing the end of the coil C out through the lateral opening B, 1 form the inner end wall 5 of the bore B inclined outwardly toward the upper end of the opening B, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, so that the end of the coil G as it is inserted in the bore B and forced toward the point A of the spike will be directed out of the lateral opening B and can be grasped by the hand and pulled forward through the rope as may be desired.
As shown in Fig. 2, the body of the spike is in the form of a tube, and the wall 6 is provided by means of a plate inserted in the tube at an angle or formed by bending inward a portion of the side of the tube. It the point A be made solid back to the opening B, the incline would of course form the inner end of such solid portion.
In the use of my invention the spike may be inserted between the coils of the rope, as shown in Fig. 1, and then forced through the rope until the overlying coil of the rope will stand between the opening B and the buttend of the spike. The coil or end C can then be inserted through the bore B and be directed by the incline I) out through the lateral opening in the spike to form a convenient handheld for use in drawing the coil or length C between the coils of the rope which it maybe desired to splice.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The improved splicing-spike herein described having one end pointed and provided in its other end with the longitudinal bore and with the lateral opening at the inner end of said here and with the inclined wall at the inner end of the bore for directing the length of rope out through the lateral opening, substantially as and for the pur 'iose set forth.
2. A splicing-spike having a point at one end and provided in its other end with a longitudinal bore and with the lateral opening and inclined wall at the inner end of said here substantially as set forth.
3. A s 'ilieing-spike provided in its butt-end with the longitudinal bore and at the inner end of said bore with the lateral opening and an incline leading thereto substantially as set forth.
4. A marlinespike having a tubular body open at its butt-end providing a longitudinal bore and having an inclined plate crossing said bore and a lateral opening adjacent to said inclined plate and between the same and the butt-end of the spike substantially as set forth.
5. A s )licingspike provided in its butt-end with a longitudinal bore and with a sloped end wall and lateral opening at the inner end of said bore, substantially as set forth.
FRED KAPPLER, JR.
