BURGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,637, dated May 10, 1904:. Application filed November 13, 1903. Serial No. 181,092. (No model.)
To all whom 21/; may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAV AooLE SACHS, a citizen of the German Empire, residing in Eugene, county of Lane, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new an d useful I1 nprovements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the fol-' lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to burglar-alarms, and more particularly to alarms in the form of guns which are adapted to be connected in such a manner with doors and windows affording access to houses, apartments, &c., that when such means of access are opened or tampered with the gun is fired, so that the occupants are given notice thereof.
For this purpose the invention consists of certain novel features and combinations of parts, which will be fullydescribedhereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved burglar-alarm as applied to a window. Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved burglar alarm, drawn on a somewhat larger scale and showing the firing-pin spring slightly compressed. Fig. 3 represents a rear view of the burglar-alarm,showing the barrel out of alinement with the breech-cylinder for extracting the discharged cartridge in the barrel and re placing a new one therein. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show details of construction, in which Fig. 4: shows a horizontal longitudinal section taken on line 4: 4 of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 a vertical transverse section on lines 5 5 of Fig. 4:, and Fig. 6 a detail view of the barrel-cleaning piece B.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame provided with several holes or perforations 7), through which screws 7) pass, which engage a door or window frame. The frame A consists of standards a, which support a breechcylinder B, provided with a hole it at one end, B, and a screw-thread at the other end, B A firing-pin on, having an enlargement or lug l at one end and provided with a pointed end t, adapted to pass through the hole A in the breech-cylinder, is guided in the breech-cylinder bya screw-threaded cap or closing piece B in the screw-threaded end B of the breechcylinder. The cap B is provided with a diametrical recess t,-so as to be conveniently removed from the barrel by the aid of a screwdriver. Between the enlarged portion Z of the liring-pin m and the screw-tineaded cap B a spring Or is interposed. The firing-pin m is slotted or bifurcated, the two parts m on being connected near their ends by a transverse rod a, having a small wheel a rotatable thereon. A wedge-shaped slide M, provided with a perforation (Z at one end and of a width somewhat less than the distance between the parts m an of the firing-pin m, is adapted. to be inserted between the parts on and m end B of the frame and wheelvt, and drawn through the bifurcated tiring-pin. A barrel 1), having an annular recess 1) for the rim of the cartridge, is provided with a downwardly-extending lug D. A fasteningscrew E connects the downwardly-extonding lug 1 pivotally with the standard a of the frame A, so as to permit the barrel 1) to be moved out of alinement with the breech-cylinder B for extracting the dischargedcartridge and replacing a new one. For insuring an alinement of the barrel 1) with the breechcylinder B the lug D provided with a springactuated lock-pin E, adapted to engage a corresponding recess R of the standard a of the frame A. The wedge -shaped slide M is adapted to slightly compress the spring Gr when in the position shown in Fig. 2. When the slide is pulled through the bifurcated liringpin, the spring G is compressed, and when the slide is completely pulled through the firing-pin m is suddenly released, whereby the compressed spring forces the firing pin with considerable energy inwardly into the barrel B, whereupon the pointed end Z of the pin passes through the hole it and strikes the cartridge and discharges the same. The wed geshaped slide M is somewhat thinner at one end than at the other, so as to be adapted to engage the'recess f; of the scrmv-threaded cap B, and so be of utility when taking the members of the burglar-alarm apartfor cleaning or repairing.
The operation of my improved alarm gun is as follows: The frame A is fastened by screws 7) to the sash T of the window T, and the barrel 1) is provided with a cartridge O.
The perforated end of the wedge-shaped slide M is connected, by a string or chain (Z passing through the hole d, with the window T. 'lVhen the window is opened, the wedge-shaped slide M is drawn between the two members an m of the bifurcated firing pin m, and thereby causes the withdrawal of the firing-pin m from the-breech-cylinder B, and thereby the compression of the firing pin spring G. When the wedge-shaped slide M has been completely pulled through the firing-pin m, the firing-pin m, being released, strikes with considerable force against the cartridge and explodes the same, thus giving notice of the intrusion of strangers to the occupants of the house.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A burglar-alarm, comprising a frame, a breech-cylinder supported by said frame, a barrel provided with a cartridge normally in alinement with said breech-cylinder, a springactuated firing-pin having a slot movable in said breech-cylinder and projecting from the same, and means adapted to pass through the slotted firing-pin for withdrawing the firingpin from the breech-cylinder, for compressing the firing-pin spring, and, when completely withdrawn through the firing-pin, release the firing-pin so that the same strikes the cartridge in the barrel, substantially as set forth.
2; A burglar-alarm, comprising a frame, a breech-cylinder supported by said frame, a barrel provided with a cartridge normally in alinement with said breech-cylinder and having a downwardly-extending lug pivoted to said frame for moving the barrel out of alinement with the breech-cylinder, a firing-pin in said breech-cylinder having a' slot and projecting from the breech-cylinder, a spring for the firing-pin, and means adapted to pass through the slotted firing pin for withdrawing the firing-pin from the breech-cylinder for compressing the firing-pin spring, and, when completely withdrawn through the firing-pin, re-
lease the firing-pin so that the same strikes the cartridge in the barrel, substantially as set forth.
3. A burglar-alarm, comprising a frame, a breech-cylinder supported by said frame, a barrel provided with a cartridge normally in alinement with said breech-cylinder and having a downwardly-extending lug pivoted to said frame for moving the barrel out of alinement with the breech-cylinder, a lock-pin in said lug engaging a recess of said frame, a spring-actuated firing-pin in said breech-cylinder having a slot and projecting from the breech-cylinder, and means adapted to pass through the slotted firing-pin for withdrawing the firing-pin from the breech-cylinder for compressing the firing-pin spring, and, when completely withdrawn through the firing-pin, release the firing-pin so that the same strikes the cartridge in the barrel, substantially as set forth.
4. A burglar-alarm, comprising a frame, a breech-cylinder supported by said frame, a barrel provided with a cartridge, a firing-pin movable in said barrel, pointed at one end and having a lug in proximity thereto, and slotted at the other end, a spring interposed between one end of the breech-cylinder and lug on the firing-pin, and a wedgeshaped slide perforated at one end adapted to pass through the slotted firing-pin for withdrawing the liring-pin from the breech-cylinder, for compressing the firing-pin spring, and, when completely withdrawn through the firing-pin, release the firing-pin so that the same strikes the cartridge in the barrel and explodes the same, substantially as set forth.
