Description

`sAIMUELLo-VE, or INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
Leiters Patent No. 75,939, amd. March 24,1868,
@tige Stbshnletefrttthrtt iii-tiger; etttts @mnt 1mb Vmaking prut ti ibs simu.,
TO ALL WHOM 1T MAY -COITGERN Beit known thatLSAnnmLv of. thevcity 'df Indianapolis, county o f Mariomaml v'State of Indiana, have'iiuventeda nelwfjid useful Devicefonilling. Railroad-Tanks with Water; and (lo dclare thefollowing to be afull and complete description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, und to the letters and figures-of refereljice marked thereonz l The nature of the invention consists in the construction), arrangement, und use of the device herein-described, said device to bemade` of wood and iron orany'other suitable material. Y b lo enable others skilled in the art'tomake and use m'y said invention, I proceed 'to describe it more fully,
as follows:` l l Letters F, G, H, of Figure lof 'the accompanying drawings, represent a pool or tank of water under 'the railroad-trulck. In that pqol'or tank (resting securely on.the timbers m and n) is placed a horizontal pump, A represented by C` C of said fig; 1,v and in section byFgure 2 o f the accompanying drawings. The piston of this pulpis solid; and provided with alnordirmry pistou-rod, D D; which is propelled bythel'ever L L. Said lever i L is fastened'to `the piston-rod vby -a convenient joint at I, Aund rests its fulcrum on the bench B B at'W. A pipe, P P,.wi'th a, valve, is provided to convey Vthe water upward to the locomotive-tender.-
To use the said device,` the draw-bar of the locomotive is fastened to the coupling-.bar O O at the endof the lever L L, which passes up through the truck fail-r enough for that purpose. 'Nom bymoving the-locomotive f backward and forward, it will cause the lever L-L to. oscillate around .the fulcrum at-W, and as the piston-rod D D and thepiston D D- are'attuchedto the said lever L L, `it will causev them to move backwards and'forwards in the pump C C, and 'so force the wa'ter into the pipelP. The-upperend of the pipe PP may be made iiexhle, se as to-couvey the water intothe'locoulotive-tender. ,When the tender is full, the draw-bar may be uncoupled, and lthe locomotiv released. It is entirely evident that if said pumpAC C bem'ude large enough, it willtmlyf fake two or three strokes of `the piston to fill the tender. I
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,`isy N l V The device herein' described, when the sameis constructed in its several parts and operatedin the way and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
