VEHICLE-SPRING.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,368A dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed August 18,1903.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, NELs HALvERsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improve- `ments in Vehicle-Springs, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to vehicle-springs.
The object of the invention is the provision of a durable and eiiicient vehicle-spring which can be easily adjusted for light or heavy loads,
will prevent bounding of the springs, and compensate for jars and strains of all kinds.
Further objects are to provide a novel arrangement of the springs to economize 1n material and eliminate dead-spring areas and a side elevation; Fig. 2, a perspective view of one-half of the device; Fig. 3, detached details of the hangers for the inner ends of the main springs; Figs. 4 and 5, details of modiiied forms of hangers which are coupled together; Fig. 6, a section on line m of Fig. 5; Fig. 7, enlarged details of a modified form of hanger, and Fig. 8 detached details of the hangers of Fig. 7.
The vehicle-bed 1 is supported on the biolster 2. At the ends of the bolster are guideclips 4 for the free ends of the leaf of the upper section of the springs 5 and 6 to slide therein.
The springs 5 and 6 are each composed of upper and lower sections or leaves 7 and 8, the inner ends of which are embraced by a clip 9, having striick-up ridges 10 in its legs and receiving similar struck-up portions 11, formed on the leaves of the springs.
A U-shaped shackle 12 .embraces the clip and spring and has its yoke received in the struck-up ridge 10 on the lower leg of the clip. A clamp-plate 13, conformed to the ridge 10 of' the upper leg of the clip 9, is provided at or near its middle with opposite notches 14. The legs of the shackle 12 pass through openings 15 in the ends of the clampseriai No. 169,941. (No model.)
Beneath the lower leaves 8 of the main springs 5 and 6 is a single supplemental or compensating spring 18.
rThe springs 7 and 18 are connected to removable bolts 19 and 20, forming parts of shackles 22. The bolts 19 have crank portions 23, journaled in bearings 24 on the axle 25.
' Depending from the bolster 2 are limit-bars 26, having rubber-covered ends 27, on which bolts 19 rest. These limit-bars prevent bounding of the springs upwardly.
In the foregoing construction the supplemental spring 18 compensatesfor tilting of the main springs 5 and 6 and equalizes the strains and jars to which they are simultaneously or independently subjected. The hangers permit the main springs to move longitudinally, and the guide-clips also permit this movement. The hanger and clip and shackle construction permits easy removal or addition of l the spring-leaves, so that the springs can be tensioned to suit any load from the lightest to the heaviest. The provision of independent main springs eliminates the use of dead-spring area and renders repair cheaper and easier than with the ordinary single spring in common use.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 the clips 28 and spring-leaves have struckup nested portions 29, made by the use of a center punch, and upper and lower clampplates 30 are formed in the same piece with said clips and connected by bolts 31. Secured on the upper clamp-plates by the bolts 31 are yokes 32, which are coupled together by links 33, and the yokes 32 are hung in bearings 34 on a plate 35, secured to the bolster. This construction causes the main springs 5 and 6 to move together longitudinally thereof.
In the modification of Fig. 8 the clip is similar to clip 28, except that struck-up ridges 36 are formed in the spring and clip. The yoke IOO 37 is rounded and hung from a rounded hanger 38, secured to the bolster. This construction permits the springs to move both laterally and longitudinally. The hangers are not connected.
In the various forms the supplemental spring strengthens the entire device and is made removable at will by taking out the `bolts 20.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a bolster, of two hangers near the middle thereof, two separate main springs each composed of upper and lower sets of leaves diverging from a common point of pivotal connection with one of said hangers, the upper sets bearing at their outer ends against said bolster', a supplemental spring extending lengthwise of the bolster, and shackles connecting each end of said supplemental spring with the outer end of the lower set of leaves in the adjacent main spring.
Q. In a vehicle-spring, the combination of separate main springs each consisting of diverging leaves, of separate hangers connected to the respective springs at their point of springs suspended therefrom, and stationary limitbars engaging the outer ends of said springs to limit the play thereof.
5. The combination with a bolster, of leafsprings suspended therefrom near its middle, and hooked limit-bars secured to the ends of said bolster and engaging the outer ends of said springs.
