THOMAS H. SIMPSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO MONARCH COUPLER COMPANY, (LIMITED,) OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORA- TION OF MICHIGAN.
CHEEK PIECE R PLATE FOR HOLDING THE DRAFT-RIGGING TO THE UNDER SIDES OF CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,321, dated Ma, 10, 1904. Application filed February 4, 1904. Serial No. 191,938. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check Pieces or Plates for Holding the Draft-Rigging to the Under Sides of Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in the cheek pieces or plates for holding the draft-rigging to the under sides of cars.
The invention consists in the construction I 5 hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view, Fig. 2 a top view, Fig. 3 a frontview, and Fig. Iarear view, ofadevice provided with the invention; Fig. 5, a detail sectional View through a pair of projections.
In the drawings, A and A represent two twin cheelepieces or supports for receiving the rear end of the usual draw-bar with springs and followers. These twin checkpieces A and A are made exactly alike except that they are right and left handed, being complementary one to the other, so as to be upon opposite sides of the rear end of the draw-bar. On top these cheek-pieces have 3 the several projections a, provided at their extreme ends a with the rabbets a These rabbets are of such shape and dimension that they are adapted to each other in pairs and snugly lit when the two cheek-pieces A A 3 5 are placed in position on a car. Rivets B are secured through the ends a at the rabbets (1 At the rear end, near the bottom, these cheekpieees A A have the projections a a, pro- Vided at their extreme ends a, with the shoul- 4 dered portions or rabbets a, similar in construetion to the rabbets a. Rivets B are socured through the ends a at the rabbets 60'.
In use the two cheek-pieces A and A are secured in the usual way between the drafttimbers of a car, and the twin projections a a and a are riveted together in pairs by the rivets B B.
Prior to this invention it has been a very common practice to secure the draft-rigging of a car in place by means of two pairs of 5 stops, one pair in front and the other in rear of follower-plates, and to fasten straps to these stops both lengthwise and across the draft-timbers. It has also been quite common to use two cheek pieces or plates, one secured to the inside of each draft-timber, and
to fasten straps to the tops and bottoms of these cheek-pieces across from one to the other.
In the latter construction, to which the present invention more nearly approximates, there were separate straps for bracing the cheekpieces.
In the present device by providing the cheek-pieces with the projections the separate straps are dispensed with and the number of 5 holding bolts or rivets reduced. The pairs of projections when riveted together perform the function of the cross-straps in thoroughly bracing the cheek-pieces, and the rabbets assist in resisting any tendency to compress the 7 cheek-pieces toward each other. WVith cheekpieces so constructed any usual device for holding the contents up between them may be used.
In the present instance the cheek-pieces are shown perforated for bolts to hold up a bottom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The cheek-pieceshaving the complemen- 30 tary projections at their tops, and rivets at and securing the ends of the projections in pairs.
2. The cheek-pieces having the projections provided with rabbets, and means for securing the projections together. 5
3. The cheek-pieces, A A, having the projections, a a and a, provided with rabbets, a e and a, and the rivets, B B.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two wit- 9 nesses.
THOMAS H. SIMPSON.
