PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. WALSH, OF LOCKPORT, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN DISTRICT STEAM COMPANY, OF LOGKPORT, NEW YORK, A CORPORA- TION OF NEW YORK.
STEAM-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,144, dated May 3, 1904.
Application filed March 16, 1903. Serial No. 147,996- (No model.)
To (ti/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN D. WALSH, a citizen of the United States, residingat Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Traps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of steam-trap; and it consists in the constructions, combinations, and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference-symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating my improved steam-trap with the cover removed, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a casing provided with a cover A and with the usual inlet and outlet for the steam. A chamber A is formed in the lower portion of the casing and provided with an inlet-port A for the water of condensation and with an outlet-port A therefor. A valve D, provided for controlling the drain-port A, is provided with an elongated tapered lower portion constructed to extend through said port when the valve is seated, whereby the port will be choked by such elongated portion during the early movement of the valve and free flow through the port retarded until the valve is removed from the influence of the escaping current. The valve-seat is provided with an annular flange e for supporting a cylindrical screen Gr, which tends to deflect the escaping current of water in a direction normal to the The valve when necessary can be readily cleansed should any particles get into it in use by merely raising the screen from its supporting-ledge. This particular construction of valve, together with the deflecting-screen, acts to prevent premature and irregular closing of the valve under the action of the escaping current of water, and thereby avoids the usual troublesome intermittent closing of the valve under the ramming action of the water.
The valve-stem d passes through a cap H at the upper portion of the screen and is pivotally secured to an arm B which latter is pivoted to the casing at C. The arm B carries a float B at its free end and is guided in its movement by lugs J, extending from the casing.
In the operation of my device the moisture contained in the steam passing through the trap accumulates in the lower portion of the casing A until an amount of water has become entrapped suflicient to raise the float B, and
thereby open the drain-valve '1) against the pressure of the steam and water. During the early movement of such valve the drain-port will be choked and free flow through the port retarded until the valve is sufficiently raised to remove it from the influence of the escaping current. Under many practical conditions of use the escaping current is very rapid, being accelerated by the combined action of the water-head and steam-pressure within the trap and causes troublesome intermittent closing of the valve in previous constructions with accompanying shocks caused by the hammering action of the water.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a steam-trap, the combination of a casing provided with inlet and outlet openings for steam and with a drain-port for the water of condensation, a valve arranged to control said drain port and provided with a tapering, elongated portion constructed to extend through said port when the valve is seated, whereby the port will be choked by such elongated portion during the early movement of the valve and free flow through the port retarded until the valve is removed from the in fiuence of the escaping current, a detachable screen disposed around said port, whereby,
when necessary, instantaneous access may be had to the valve for purpose of cleansing, and a float constructed to operate said valve, substantially as described.
2. In a steam-trap, the combination of a casing provided with inlet and outlet openings for steam, a chamber in the lower portion of said casing, a drain-port establishing commu-' nication between said casing and chamber, a valve arranged to control said drain-port and provided with a tapering, elongated portion constructed to extend through said port when the valve is seated, whereby the port will be choked by such elongated portion during the early movement of the valve and free flow through the port retarded until the Valve is removed from the influence of the escaping BURT W. HALL, CHARLES R. BISHOP.
