RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,906, dated May 3, 1904;.
Application filed September 1, 1903. Serial No. 171,490. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, ZIAN ELMORE FIvEAsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Heckla, in the county of Perry and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rail-joints, and has for its object simple and eflicient means for uniting and supporting the adjacent ends of railway-rails.
With this object in view the invention consists in an arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the parts before they are assembled. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the completed joint. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 and 6 indicate two rails having" enlarged webs 7 for some distance from their respective ends. A channel 8 is formed in the enlarged Web of each rail, said channels being in alinement when the rails are placed together endwise. The channels do not extend through the heads of the rails, which are thus left intact. This construction leaves only one space or gap between the adjoining ends of the rails, and there will be but little jar when the car-Wheels pass from one rail to another.
At 9 is indicated a plate having a vertical web 10 of the same height as the channels in the rails. The ends of the rails are supported on this plate and the Web enters the channels. This prevents sidewise separation of the rails. Endwise separation of the same is prevented by bolts 11 passing through the rails and the web of the plate 9. Said plate has notches 9 along opposite edges for spikes, by which it is secured to the ties. As the ends of the rails are supported on the plate and also on the top of the web 9, a strong and rigid joint is had.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
A rail-joint comprising adjacent rails having enlarged Webs for a distance from their respective ends, and alined vertical channels under the rail-head, a plate under the ends of the rails and having a projecting Web extending into the channels, and bolts passing through the rails and the Web of the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ZIAN ELMORE FIVEASH.
