UNITED STATES Patented April 26, 1904.
PATE T OFFICE.
ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO ORVAL J. ANDREWS AND HERBERT A. KNIGHT, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
RAILWAY BRIDLE-FROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,421, dated April 26, 1904. Application filed July 25, 1903- Serial (N0 modem To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD HENRY FRAN- oIs CorTRALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway Bridle-Rods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bridle-rods for railway-switches, the object of which is to provide a simple, convenient, firm, and durable device for quickly and easily adjusting the width of the points of switches. These objects I obtain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whi ch Figure 1 is a View in elevation of the entire device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of one end of the bridle-rod. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of Fig. 2.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in the severalfigures.
A is the main bridle-rod provided with teeth or notches A near each end for receiving similar notches B and O in the adjustable pieces B and O. Said adjustable pieces B and O are provided with two or more clamping-bolts for holding the adjustable parts firmly to the main bridle-rod A. Said bolts D, E, and F are preferably provided with squared shoulders to prevent their turning where they pass through the main bridle-rod, and for the purpose of adjustment the main bridle-rod A has a slot A? near each end, in which the bolts D and E work back and forth, and the adjustable pieces B and O are provided with slots B and G which permit the adjustable part to receive the bolt F to slide back and forth. Said bolts'are provided with nuts D E and F and with suitable washers D E and F Said washers may be any desired kind, preferably a spring or nut-lock washer, to prevent the nuts from turning off.'
By this device I adjust the points of the rail at the switch to the desired width by loosen-- ing the nuts D E and F and moving the adjustable piece back and forward on the main bridle-rod, and for adjusting the opposite end the movable piece C is operated in the same way. By this constructionI can change either end of the bridle-rod so as to adjust either one of the tracks without taking up or removing the main bridle-rod, which is attached to the switch-lever.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. Combination of an adjustable bridle-rod having notches for engaging movable plates, and holes and slots for receiving bolts combined with movable plates having notches for engaging the bridle-rod, holes and slots for receiving and adjusting connecting-bolts, and connecting-bolts provided with nuts and locking-washers for holding the same in position shown and described for the purpose specified.
2. An adjustable bridle-rod consisting of a main part or rod provided with notches for engaging sliding plates, and holes and slots for receiving adjusting-bolts, combined with adjustable sliding plates near each end, said plates being provided with notches for engaging the main rod, and holes, and slots for adjusting-bolts, and bolts for securing the parts in the desired positions substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination in a bridle-rod of a main rod, and two movable attachments or parts,-
one near each end for adjusting the width of switch-points of railway-rails, said movable parts having slots, and holes for bolts and bolts provided with locks for securing the same in position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
