' VAGLAV FINGOUST, OF CLARKS MILLS, VVI SCONSIN.
' WAGONr-BRAKE,
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 'o. 758,308, dated April 26, 1904. I Application filed February 11, 1903. Serial No. 142,979. (No nicdeL) .To a, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LVAoLAv FINGOUST, a citizen 0f the United States, residing at Clarks Mills, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVagon-Brakes; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple economical wagon-brake mechanism designed to be set by the holding back of a team of horses in connection therewith, especially when descending inclinations of roads; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a plan View of brake mechanism in accordance with my invention applied in connection with the front truck and pole of an ordinary wagon, the pole being partly shown by dotted lines; Fig. 2, a partly sectional elevation of the same viewed-from the side; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the forward end of the wagon-pole and parts of the brake mechanism in connection therewith, and Fig. 4: a front elevation of what is shown in the first figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, 1 indicates a brake-beam provided with shoes K and having loose play in hangers P, suspended from the hounds of the front truck of a wagon. Attached to the brake-beam are links G, and a bolt Q connects the forward ends of the links with rear upper ends of crooked levers F, that are fulcrumed on the pivot-bolt D, connecting the pole A of the wagon with the hounds aforesaid, the lower forward ends of the levers being connected by a bolt R with rear branches of a forked rod E, having sliding support in hangers U, depending from said pole.
The forked forward end of the rod E is engaged by a link L,that connects a pair of short chains in connection with a neck-yoke B, and said link is also at times in engagement with a ratchet-bar N, made fast on the upper side of the wagon-pole at the forward end of same, Straps a' are employed to connect the neckyo ke with the harness of horses hitched to the wagon, and a roller M is supported in connection .with the rod E to bear against the pole A, this roller serving to facilitate movement of said rod.
Springs 9 have coils thereof on the bolt D,
and the ends of these springs extend in opposite directions, their forward ends being connected to the pole-hounds and their rear ends looped over the bolt Q, whereby downward pressure is exerted on the levers F to hold the brake-beam shoes away from the adjacent wheels when the link L is disengaged from I the ratchet-bar N aforesaid.
In pivotal connection with the sand-hoard C of the truck is a drop-hook H, and this hook is put into engagement with the bolt, Q, whenever it is desirable to prevent operation of the brake mechanism due to backing or holding back of the horses hitched to the wagon, and said hook being engaged with said bolt the pole A is held in horizontal position, its weight being then 0d said horses. It also follows that the pole may be held up off the ground by the engagement of the hook H and bolt Q when the horses are unhitched from the wagon. The hook being disengaged from the bolt Q, backing or holding back of the horses hitched to the wagon will result in backward movementof the rod E to actuate the levers F, whereby there is pull on the links G and brake-beam to cramp the brake-shoes against the adjacent wheels. At the same time there 7 is engagement of the link L with the ratchetbar N to hold the brake as tight as it is possible to set the same, there being sufiicient lengthof said bar to compensate for wear of said shoes. The horses being required to pull after setting of the brake, the previously-contracted springs O expand, and thus insure releasing of said brake.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the brake-beam loose in hangers, the pole, levers fulcrumed on the pivot-bolt of said pole, links connecting said brake-beam and levers, a rod in connection with said levers, a link in connection with the forward end of the rod, a ratchet-bar on the aforesaid pole engaged by the link, and a neckyoke connected to said link.
2. The combination of the brake-beam loose in hangers, the pole, spring-controlled levers fulcrurned on the pivot-bolt of said pole, links connecting said brake-beam and levers, a rod in connection with said levers, a link in con nection with the forward end of the rod, a ratchet-bar on the aforesaid pole engaged by {hi link, and a neck-yoke connected to said 3. The brake-beam loose in hangers, the pole, levers fulcrumed on the pivot-bolt of said pole and connected at their rear ends by P. A. MILLER, P. J. MOMAHON.
