SHELLEY B. vHUTGHINSON, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
NEWSPAPER on PEmooloAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,139, dated April 26, 1904.
Application filed December 22, 1903. Serial No. 186.217. (No model.)
T0 all wil/0in it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, SHELLEY B. HUTCHIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ypsilanti, in the county of l/Vashtenaw andonly one is detached the next one below will be exposed to view, the iiaps being printed with any desired matter, either advertising or coupons, all as more fully hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation showing a newspaper with four iiaps at the corner, the flaps being slightly turned up, so as to be shown in perspective. Fig. 2 isafront elevation of one of the leaves of the paper, illustrating the iiap turned back to illustrate the line of perforation; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing the flaps turned down flat on the front.
At the present time it is quite general for newspapers in some or all of their editions to have guessing-contests or puzzles, puzzle-pictures, or coupons printed into the paper, which it is necessary for the subscriber to cut out and return to the paper, with answers to the puzzles or rebus, or to return the coupon for some purpose, and these coupons are printed, ordinarily, in the body of the page, and in order to get them out they' have to be cut. These coupons thus applied are not applied in such a distinctive mannerv as to attract attention to them, nor are they readily removable without destroying some other matter on the Papel My invention consists in applying to one corner a series of coupons formed by perforating the paper in a diagonal line, as shown at A, Fig. 2, and then folding that portion of the paper beyond the perforations, being a triangular flap B, down upon the outside of the paper, one flap being superposed upon another, which always brings such coupons directly to the attention of the purchaser and makes the same readily detachable without destroying any of the valuable reading-matter onthe paper.
I preferably print upon the outer face C of the Hap, so that when the flap is folded down the printed matter will be on the outside, and in case one flap is removed the printed matter on the one below it will still be outside, andV in this manner all the flaps can be successively brought into view without openingthe paper.
I may further direct attention to the flaps or coupons by printing them in different colors from that of the remainder of the paper or periodical, so that a person purchasing the paper will have his attention immediately called by the color scheme to these particular coupons, which makes it very desirable for advertising, bringing the same prominently to the attention of whoever may see that particular paper or periodical.
W'hat I claim as my invention is- 1. A newspaper having a series of diagonal perforations across the' corner of superposed leaves forming flaps or coupons of the corners, said flaps or coupons being turned down on the outside of the paper, whereby each may be separately removed without disturbing those beneath.
2. In a newspaper a series of superposed leaves or sheets each vhaving a diagonal perforation across the same corner forming liaps or coupons, the flaps or coupons being folded coupon on the inner leaf or sheet being on the outside and having printed matter upon the exposed or outer faces thereof.
3. A newspaper composing a series of superposed sheets each having a diagonal perfo.
ration across the same corner forming flaps or coupons, said flaps or coupons being turned down the flap on the inner leaf belng turned A over those upon the leaves in front, ,and hav-
