UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
THOMAS LEGGETTVSTURTEVANT, OF QUINCY, AND THOMAS J. STURTE- VANT, OF WELLESLEY, MASSAOHUSETTS.' I
MECHANICAL FEEDING- DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 758,119, dated April 26, 1904. Application filed January 9, 1904. Serial No. 188,290. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that W6,THOMAS Lneen'r'r STUR- TEVANT, residing at Quincy, and THOMAS J. I
STURTEVANT, residing at Wellesley, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Feeding Devices, of which the'following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved automatic device for feeding materials to be pulverized, screened, or otherwise acted on me chanically to machines of various kinds; and the invention comprises certain improvements on the feeding device shown and described in our Patent No. 592,698, granted July 10, 1894.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the improved feeding device with the internal construction indicated in' dotted lines, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same on a somewhat smaller scale than Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the feeding device and its operating mechanlSm.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes a casing adapted to serve as a hopper and also as a housing for the internal parts of the feeding mechanism. The casing 12 is provided with said pan or chute is supported by the upper arm of a bell-crank rocker 21, pivotally mounted in a lug 22 of the casing, and the lower arm of which is provided with a wheel or roller 23, held by a spring 2 engaging the upper end of theswinging pan or chute against the eccentric 16. The stress of the spring 24 may be regulated or varied bya set-screw 25, tapped in a lug in the casing 12 and bearing against a follower 26 at one end of said spring,
and the said set-screw may be secured in any desired position of adjustment by a locknut 27. I
The output of the feeding device may be regulated by a gravitating swinging gate 28, provided with an arm 29, pivoted at 30 to the casing 12, and having a shorter arm 31, engaged by a regulating-screw 32, tapped in a lug in the said casing 12', and provided with a set-nut 33, by which it may be held in any desired position of adjustment.
The casing 12 is preferably provided with a removable end plate or cover 3 1 for an opening, through which access may be had to the interior ofthe casing at the feed-gate end thereof.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the improved feeding device is self-contained, in that it is provided with a drivingshaft mounted on the casing thereof and provided with an eccentric from which and a coacting spring the swinging feed-pan can be operated, the feeder as a whole being adapted for attachment to any crushing, pulverizing,
screening, or other machine suitably constructed for its reception. By mounting the swinging feed pan or chute on a link and an operating rocker-arm, as shown, the said swinging pan or chute will be strongly supported on nearly frictionless bearings, so that the wear incident to the operation of the device will be reduced to a minimum, while the output of the feeder may be regulated to a nicety by the adjustable gravitating feedgate 28.
Having thus described our invention, we claimand desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a feeding device, the combination with an inclosing casing adapted to serve as a hop- I vided with an eccentric 13, and a spring 24 acting on said pan or chute and serving to hold said roller in contact with said eccentric.
2. In a feeding device, the combination with an inclosing casing adapted to serve as a hopper, of a rotating shaft mounted on said casing and provided with a driving-pulley and an eccentric, a swinging pan or chute below the hopper portion of said casing, a link, 20, movably supporting one end of said pan or chute, a bell-crank rocker, 21, the upper arm of which is pivotally connected with said pan or chute and the lower arm of which is provided with a roller 28, a driving-shaft 14 provided with an eccentric 12, a spring 24: acting on said pan or chute and serving to hold said roller in contact with said eccentric, and an adjustable feed-gate for regulating the output of the said feeding device.
3. The combination with the casing 12 the upper portion of which is adapted to serve as a hopper, of asWinging pan or chute mounted in the said casing below the hopper portion thereof, a link by which one end'of the said pan or chute is supported, a bell-crank rocker, 21, the upper arm of which is pivotally connected with said pan or chute and the lower arm of which is provided with a roller, 23, a driving-shaft provided with an eccentric and a spring bearing against one end of said pan or chute and serving to hold said roller against said eccentric, and means for regulating the stress of said spring.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
