UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS JORDAN MITCHELL, OF RUSTBURG, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK NELSON, OF RUSTBURG, VIRGINIA.
RESAWlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,946, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed. August 1, 1903. Serial No. 167,920- (No model.)
To all whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs JORDAN Mrrorr- ELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rustburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Resawing-IWIachines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in resawing-machines, and comprises an apparatus for securely holding the block or slab to be sawed and suitably mounted upon a carriage which is given a reciprocating movement, whereby the block or slab may be conveniently cut into strips.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction, combinations, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings certain letters indicate like parts, in Which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved resawing apparatus. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. i is a sectional detail view. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view.
Reference now being had to the drawings by letter, A designates a carriage-supporting block or plate having a series of grooved antifriction-rollers B mounted at invervals and in alinement, and O designates a plate which is supported over the plate A by means of posts D, and secured to the under face of said plate O is a series of grooved antifriction-rollers E. r
F designates a carriage which is mounted upon edge and has atongue F along its under marginal edge which is adapted to fit in and be guided by the recesses in the rollers B,
while the upper surface of said carriage has a groove G, one marginal edge of which is adapted to engage the recesses in the circumference of the antifriction-rollers E, whereby as the carriage is reciprocated it may be guided by said tongue and groove engaging the antifriction-rollers, as described. Projecting from one face of the carriage is a ridge H, upon which a block K or slab to be sawed is adapted to rest. Fastened to one face of the carriage is a spur-plate N, designed to engage one end of the block to be sawed, while the other end of the block is adapted to be engaged by a movable clamping-plate O, having spurs along its front angled end. A lug O is carried by said plate O, and a lever P is pivoted at P to the carriage and has an elongated slot Q, which engages said lug. Fastened in a recess along the marginal edge of the carriage is a rackbar R, the teeth of which are engaged by a dog T, pivotally mounted upon said lever. Said carriage has an elongated slot S, and S is a block which has a longitudinal movement in said slot. A cross-piece S is secured to the block S, and the ends thereof project beyond the longitudinal edges of said slot and serve tocooperate with the edges of the clamping-plate O to guide said block in the elongated slot S. The block S is fastened by any suitable means to the clamping-plate 0, whereby the clamping-blocks may be moved together.
A drumW, mounted in the plates A and O, is adapted to receive a cable or rope U, the ends of which are connected to the opposite ends of the carriage after passing over suitable pulleys V. By any suitable geared connection said drum may be madeto rotate in one direction or the other, accordingly as it is desired to drive the carriage forward or return the same, and said mechanism may be controlled by any suitable lever-and-clutch mechanism; but as the same forms no part of the present invention it is not deemed necessary to illustrate or to describe these details, as the essential features of the invention'pertain exclusively to the carriage mechanism and means for holding the block.
In operation the operator by raising the dog from engagement with the teeth of the rack-bar may throw the free end of the lever forward, which will cause the clamping-plate O to be thrown away from the block to be sawed. When it is desired to clamp the block, one end is inserted against the plate N and the lever is thrown rearward, which will cause the clamping-plate O to securely engage the opposite end of the slab or block to be sawed, and when the teeth of the plate 0 are securely embedded in the end of the block the dog may be thrown into engagement with the teeth of the rack-bar to securely hold the plate in a clamping relation, and as the plate 0 is securely fastened to the guide-block S the opposite edges of said guide-block carrying against the marginal edges of the slot S will serve to hold the teeth of the plate 0 securely in place. When the block is thus held, the same may be resawed with ease and without necessity of the operator holding the block while being sawed.
By theprovision of an apparatus embodying-the features of my invention it will be observed that slabs or blocks of any kind may be conveniently gripped and held by the clamping means and sawed into strips by the simple manipulation 'of lever mechanism for throwing the carriage forward and back- Ward. 7
While I have shown a particular construction of apparatus embodying the features of my resawing-machine, it will be understood that I may make changes in the detailed construction of the same without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A resawing apparatus comprising in combination with a saw and table, a frame adapted for attachment-to said table and grooved antifriction-rollers mounted upon said frame, a carriage having a tongue on one longitudinal edge and a groove on its opposite edge designed to engage said rollers, a ledge projectmg from one face of the carriage on which the. block to be sawed rests, a fixed clamping plate mounted on the'face of the carriage, a
