SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 757,865, dated April 19, 1904. Application filed June 8, 1903. Serial No. 160,626. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES FRYE, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in windows; and the objects of my invention are to devise a window having the sashes so secured as to be readily removed from the sashframes for the purpose of washing and cleaning, further objects being to reduce the cost of the windows and to make them simple and cheap in construction; and it consists, essentially, of a window frame and sash of the type adapted to move upwardly and downwardly, being supported or balanced by a counterweight, the rope of the counterweight being secured removably to the window-sash, and a strip having guides secured to the same, between which and the said strips the lower window is adapted to slide, and an outer strip, between which and the said guides the upper window is adapted to slide, the various parts being constructed and arranged in detail, as hereinafter more particularly explained.

Fig. 5 is a detail of the end of the balanceweight rope, showing the means for securing the same to the sash.

A is the wall in which the window is located.

B B are respectively the upper and lower sashes.

O O are the vertical side portions of the frame of the window.

D D are two vertical strips, one of which is located at each side of the window, and are secured in place preferably by the following device.

Guides E are secured to the backs of the strips 1) and extend along the frame of the window, their ends 0 being turned at right angles to the supporting portion a. Slots 0 are formed in these brackets or guides, and staples or eyelets F, which are secured to the vertical side pieces O O of the frame, extend through these slots when the strips are in position and are locked in position by pins Gr. which are secured to the guides or brackets E by suitable chains 9.

The window-sashes are counterbalanced by suitable weights H H, which slide in grooves of the ordinary construction. The ropes or cords I, which support the weights and the window-sashes, are secured to the sashes preferably by means of a device which consists of a hook J, adapted to be secured to the end of the rope, the said hook being formed with one or more twists j in its shank and a long vertical portion], the object of the portionj being to prevent the hook or the end of the rope from sliding into the groove for the weight, in which it would be inaccessible.

The hooks J are secured to staples or eyelets or any other suitable device K, located at the sides of the window-sashes.

The outer window B is supported in any suitable manner and may be either slidable in a vertical direction or secured in position, though it is preferably the former, and it is held in place by means of the guides E and outside strips L L.

It may here be mentioned that the portions '6 of the guides are made of thin stiif material,

so that although they serve to guide both the outer and inner sashes they permit of the sashes being so close together that when the windows are closed there is practically no opening which would cause a draft. As

shown, the sash B is slotted at m, so as to accommodate the portions 6 without leaving a space between the two sashes.

When it is desired to remove the windows for the purpose of washing or for other reasons, the strips D are first removed by simply pulling out the pins G from the staples or eyelets F, the lower sash being moved up or down as is necessary in order to make these pins readily accessible. The hooks J may then be removed from the eyelets or staples K, and the sash is then free to be removed.

It will thus be seen that I have devised an TOO extremely simple and cheap eontrivance for facilitating the removing of Window-sashes of the class described, and it may here be mentioned that I do not wish to be limited to the precise form of the various parts of the device as shown and described, as it might be found desirable to make certain changes in the'details of construction. As an example, I might mention that other forms of fastening devices might be used in some cases for the side strips D.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. A Window comprising a vertical slidable sash, side strips, a plurality of brackets secured to the side strips and having inwardlyturned ends forming guides for the verticallyslidable sash as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a window, the combination With a pair of vertical slidablesashes, of an outside strip and an inside strip, a plurality of brackets secured to one of said strips and having angularly-bent ends forming With said strip a guide for the inner sash and With the other stri p a guide for the outer sash as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a Window, the combination With the Window-frame and a pair of vertical slidable sashes, of an outside strip and an inside strip,
