SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 757,717, dated April 19, 1904. Application filed January 18, 1904. Serial No. 189,557. (No model.) I i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn S. BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Norwich, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Thill-Tugs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to thill-tugs, and has for its object a simple and reliable. device of this kind which can be readily applied to an ordinary harness; and it consists in a combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the tug in use. Fig.
2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1..
Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of the tug removed from the harness. Fig. 4. shows the blank from which the tug is made.
Referring to the drawings, the tug comprises a body portion 5, which is looped, as at 5, to receive the thill 6. The upper end of the tug has a buckle 7 to secure the saddle One side of the body portion has longitudinal openings 9 to receive the holdback-strap 10, and the opposite side has transverse openings 11 to receive the girth-strap and the free end of the saddle-strap.
In the construction of the tug I use a flat plate of suitable metal, as shown in Fig. i, and stamp or out the openings 9 and 11 therein, or, if desired, the plate may be cast with the openings. Nearone end of the plate I also stamp or cut the sameto form an opening 12, across which a bar 13' extends. The opposite end of the plate has a reduced portion 14, provided with holes 14?. The plate is then bent to form the loop, and the reduced end 14: is extended through the opening 12 below the bar 13 and bent around the latter. In this position the holes 1a register. The opening 12 above the bar forms the buckle,
the tongue 12 of which is secured by passing it through the holes 14, as shown in Fig. 2, which securely holds the parts together.
The bottom of the loop has aslot 15 to receive a bolt or stud 16, fastened to'the under side of the thill. This serves to hold the tug in proper position and also enables the animal to pull and back on the thills directly from the tug. The ends of the slot are enlarged, as'at 15, to enable the head of the bolt to pass therethrough.
In use the thill extends through the loop, as usual, and the saddle-strap is fastened by the buckle 7, its free end extending through the opening 12 below the bar 13 and across through one of the openings 11. The girthstrap is fastened to one of the bars formed by the openings 11-, and the holdback-strap is fastened in one of the openings 9.
, The device is thoroughly eflicient. It is simple in construction and can be cheaply made and sold. A thill-tug comprisinga plate bent to form a loop and having an opening near one end across which a bar extends and around which the free end of the plate is bent, a buckletongue secured to the bar, and strap-openings on both sides of the loop. y
