SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,691, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed March 30, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY PERCY TATTER- sALL, a British subject, and a resident of Hale, in the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic Cameras, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates, primarily, to hand or pocket cameras, and is designed to enable the user of the camera to erect the front in correct position by simply opening or drawing down the base-board, the front by this action being erected at the outer edge of the baseboard with the bellows extended. In this class of camera it has hitherto been necessary not only to open or. draw down the baseboard, but also to draw forward the front upon a slide to extend the bellows; but by my invention this double operation is avoided. To elfect the desired result, the front that carries the lens is pivoted upon two pins sliding in longitudinal slots at the sides of the base-board and engaging with slotted arms pivoted to the base board, which are connected by links with a pair of levers, also pivoted to the base-board, and operated by a cam or cam-surface fixed to the body of the camera to'propel the lower edge of the shutterfront forward during the action of opening.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the camera in extended and erected position; Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly in section, of the camera in closed position; Fig. 3, a plan of Fig. l with the bellows removed; Fig. 4, a front elevation of the selferecting front.
The camera-body A and the bellows B are of any ordinary shape or construction, and to the body A is pivoted the base-board C. The front D is of ordinary form and is provided with two central pivots e, upon which it is supported by struts E. At its bottom edge it is provided with two pins or pivots cl to traverse a longitudinal slot, by which it is propelled as the base-board is opened or closed. Along each side of the base-board is fitted a bracket F, provided with a curved slot f, extending nearly the whole length of the base- Serial No. 150,333. (No model.)
board, into which the pins d of the front D project and along which they are free to slide from end to end. The bracket F is attached to the extension-frame S when such is employed; but where the camera is constructed without an extension-frame it is attached to the base-plate. Two slotted arms or levers H, pivoted to the baseboard C, also engage the pins d of the front to propel them backward and forward along the guide-slot f in the bracket F. The arms or levers H are connected by a connecting link or rod K to two actuating-levers L, pivoted at or near their centers and at their opposite ends fitted with a pin m, engaging a fixed cam or camslot M, fixed to the interior of the camerabody behind the pivots on which the baseboard swings.
Two side struts N are pivoted to the camera-body A and to the base-board C to support the latter when open, the pin a at the lower end of the strut sliding in a slot at Lockingcatches P are pivoted at the sides of the front D to engage the pins (Z when they are drawn out to maintain the front rigidly erect, and
locking-catches R engage the pins n of the' struts Nrto maintain the base-board rigidly in position when open. ,By depressing the free ends of these catches the parts arereleased when it is desired to close the camera.
a The camera is preferably fitted withan extension-frame S to enable the front to be adjusted for focusing purposes. The frame S is moved the desired extent by an eccentricT and is guided by slots 8, passing over screws or pins t. The eccentric T may be dispensed with, and any other means tomove the frame S backward and forward substituted therefor. In operation on opening or drawing down the base-board C from the front of the camerabody A the levers L vmove forward, and the pins m thereon enter the open ends of the cam-slots M. The continued movement of the falls, eventually bringing the lower edge of the frontinto its proper position, and tl1elock ing-catches I. and R hold the parts rigidly in position. The reverse action takes place on closing the camera. The catches P and R are depressed at their outer ends to release the pins (Z and the struts N and the base-board folded upward. The lever L is held at one end by the cam-slot M and rotates upon its fulcrum, thereby drawing back the links K and with them the levers H, propelling the pins (Z back along the curved slot f, thereby causing the front to fold within the camerabody, as shown in Fig. 2.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a photographic camera the combination with the body A, the bellows B, and the base-board C, of a front D capable of moving backward and forward upon the base-board, pins (Z attached to the bottom edges of the front, a bracket provided with a longitudinal curved slot carried by the base-board in which slot the pins (Z slide to and fro, and means for propelling the front along the said slot, as the base-board is opened and closed, substantially as described and shown.
2. In a photographic camera, the combination with the body A, the bellows B, and the baseboard C, of a front D capable of moving backward and forward upon the base-board, pins cZ attached to the bottom edges of the front, a bracket provided with a longitudinal curved slot carried by the base-board in which slot the pins (Z slide to and fro, a slotted lever H pivoted to the base-board and engaging the pins (Z on the front, an operating-lever L pivoted to the base-board, a link K connecting the levers H and L, and a cam M litted to the body with which a pin m on the lever L engages to propel the front backward and forward, as the base-board is opened and closed substantially as described.
3. In a photographic camera the combination with the body A, the bellows B, baseboard C, strutted front D, and supportingstruts E, of projections D on the lower edges of the front, engaging a longitudinal channel f at the side of the baseboard, a bracket F on the base-board provided with a guidingchannel 1, and propelling mechanism connected with the body of the camera to propel the strutted front D backward and forward as the base-board is opened and closed, substantially as described.
4:. In a photographic camera the combination with the body A, bellows B, base-board C, strutted front I), and supporting-struts IQ, of projections (Z on the lower edges of the front, engaging a longitudinal channelf at the side of the base-board. a bracket F on the base-board provided with a guiding-channel f, a propelling-cam M, fitted to the side of the body, a propelling-lever L pivoted to the baseboard provided with a pin m to engage the cam M, a second lever H pivoted to the baseboard, and engaging the projections (Z on the front, and a link K connecting the levers L and H, substantially as described.
5. In a photographic camera, the combination with the body A, bellows B, base-board C, strutted front D, and supporting-struts E, of projections ("Z on the lower edges of the front, engaging a longitudinal channel f at the side of the base-board, a bracket 1* on the base-board provided with a guiding-channel f, a propelling-cam M, litted to the side of the body, a propelling-lever L pivoted to the baseboard provided with a pin m to engage the cam M, a second lever H pivoted to the baseboard and engaging the projections (Z on the front, a link K connecting the levers L and H, locking-levers P pivoted to the base-board to hold the projections (Z rigid when drawn out, struts N to support the base-board provided with pins on to slide in slots a, and locking-lever R pivoted to the baseboard to engage the strut-pin w and hold it rigid, substantially as described.
