COKE-PULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 757,283, dated April 12, 1904.
Application filed July 21, 1903- Serial No. 166,507. (N0 model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, -ANDREW J AGKSON Doss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Switchback, in thecounty of Mo- Dowell, in the State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coke-Pullers, of which the followingis a specification. p
This invention relates to a coke-puller designed to be operated by'nnachine for pulling coke from coke-ovens, and it is particularly adapted for discharging coke from beehive ovens.
The invention is herein shown as applied to a coke-puller comprising an underworking scraper operative onits instroke to loosen coke for withdrawal and on its outstroke to withdraw the loosened coke.
The object of the invention is to insure the withdrawal of the full depth of coke on the outstroke.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a plan of one embodiment of this invention, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The same reference-numbersindicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This coke-puller is designed to be mounted on a machine adapted to thrust it into and retract it from the oven and swing it laterally 1 in either direction to enable it to engage the 20 is disposed at the outer end of the bar 10 and in the form shown is adapted to slide thereon. This scraper is hollow and of Wedgelike form and comprises a bottom plate 21 of a breadth equal to the desired width of the plate 22 and back plate 23 are recessed at their upper edges, whereby a transverse slot 24 is formed at the junction of the top and back plates. The back plate is also provided with a slot 24 at its lower edge. The scraper is provided with a shank 25, having a hollow rear portion 28. A cross-bar or stud 29 extends across the hollow portion-of the shank 28.
An adjustable coke-holder 30, preferably in the form of a plate, is disposed in the hollow scraper and is connected at its front end with the front end of the rod 10, the rear end of said plate projecting through the slot 24 of said scraper. The bar 10 extends through the hollow shank 28 of the scraper and through the slot 24 of the back plate into the hollow body of-the scraper, and the connection of the plate to the bar is preferably effected by means of a hinge, which may comprise a pintle-rod 14, projecting from the opposite sides of the bar, and pintle- sockets 31 and 32, formed at opposite sides-of the front end of the plate 30. The front edge of the scraper is shown as straight; but it may be in any other form to better adapt it to the oven in which it is designed to be used.
In the use of this coke-puller it is preferably mounted on a machine similar to that shown in said patent or any equivalent thereof. The coke-puller is thrust into the oven and retracted therefrom by the machine or by hand, if desired. The drawings show the cokepuller in position for an inward thrust. On
the instroke the wedge-like scraper moves over the bottom of the oven underneath the When the motion of the bar the weight of coke behind it until the front end of the slot 13 in said bar 10 engages the cross-bar 29 of the shank of said scraper. During this backward movement of the bar 10 the coke-holder is raised through the slot 24 into vertical or approximately vertical operative position, as indicated by dotted lines, whereby it is adapted to engage a large mass of coke. The backward movement of the bar 10 is continued, and the scraper is drawn backward while the coke-holder isin open position and pushes the coke behind it out through the door of the oven. the coke-puller are preferably in a direct line, it usually requiring two or more drawings to remove the coke throughout the diameter of a coke-oven. After this is done lateral thrusts of the coke-puller are made first to one side and then to the other by means of the machine on which the coke-puller is mounted.
The shank of the scraper may be in the form of an elongated bar extending back to the machine or operator and be movable independe ently of the weight of coke to thrust the cokeholder into operative position. I claim as my invention 1. A coke-puller comprising an underworking wedge-like hollow scraper movable over the bottom of a coke-oven and provided with a slot or opening, an adjustable coke-holder disposed within said hollow scraper and projecting through said slot, and means for thrust- 'lhe first few strokes of ing said coke-holder into operative position to hold coke on the outstroke.
2. A coke-puller comprising an underworking wedge-like hollow scraper provided with an opening in its upper part and with a hollow shank, an actuating-bar extending through said hollow shank into said hollow scraper, and an adjustable coke-holder consisting of a plate hinged to said bar and thrust into operative position through said opening.
3. A coke-puller comprising an underworking wedge-like hollow scraper provided with a'"s1ot in its upper part and with a hollow shank having an interior stud, an actuatingbar extending through said hollow shank into said hollow scraper and provided with a slot engaged by said stud, and an adjustable cokeholder consisting of a plate hinged to said barand thrust into operative position through said opening.
4. A coke-puller comprising an actuatingbar, an underworking wedge like hollow scraper slidable on said bar and provided with a slot in its upper part, an adjustable cokeholder disposed within said hollow scraper and projecting through said'slot and means connecting said coke-holder with said bar.
