WARREN F. WHEELER, OF STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
SNOW-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,163, April 12, 1904. Application filed November 11, 1903. Serial No. 186,644. (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARREN F. WHEELER, of Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to snow-plows for clearing sidewalks and streets; and it has for its object to provide a simple and effective construction whereby the plow can be tipped sidewise to raise and depress its moldboard side, and thus adapt the plow to the nature of the surface overwhich it is moving, the object being particularly to enable the moldboard side to'be raised, and thus incline the plane of the bottom surface of the plow when the same is working in a gutter adjacent to a sidewalk.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents nected and suitably braced to form a substantial plow, the side piece 0 being rigidly attached to or forming a part of the runner a, so that when the said runner a is inclined, as shown in Fig. 5, the entire plow is inclined, thus raising the moldboard e and inclining the bottom edge of the plow, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. This adjustment adapts the plow to operate in a gutter adjacent to a sidew alk,the runner a and the side piece 6 being at the bottom or lowest part of the gutter and in close proximity to the sidewalk, while the moldboard 0 projects outwardly toward the middle of the street and form to the general inclination of the bed of snow which is to be left upon the street. It is desirable to remove the snow to greater depth at the lowest part of a gutter than at the central portion of the street, and this result is produced by the adjustment of the plow, as shown in Fig. 5. Means are employed for inclining the plow in the manner shown, said means in this case comprising a lever f,
a top plan view of a snow-plow embodying f to asupportaiiixed to the platform 0. The my invention. Fig. Qrepresentsa side elevashorter arm of said lever engages a lug g, tion of the same. Fig. 3 represents aperspecsuitably affixed to the plow, said lug in this tive view. Fig. 1 represents atransverse seccase being attached to an upright g, which tion on line 4 t of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a view, similar to Fig. 4:, showing the mold board side of the plow raised to incline the bottom of the plow.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a and brepresent longitudinally-extending runners whichsupport the operative parts of the sled, hereinafter de- To the runner b is aflixed a platform is aiiixed to two cross-bars g 9 extending between the side pieces 6 and e. The longer arm of the lever f is movable in a suitable guide it, aflixed to the platform 0. It will be seen that a depression of the longer arm of the lever f causes the shorter arm of said lever to raise the outer or moldboard side of the plow, thus inclining it laterally, as shown.
6 represents a wing or extension hinged to the rear portion of the plow and adjustable at any desired angle, said wing being held at the angle desired by means of toggle-links t' z', one connected with the runner to and. the other with the wing 6 the meeting ends of said links being connected with a rope or chain j, wound upon an operating rod or spindle 7a, which may be locked in any desired position by a pawlZ and ratchet n. The wings e and the means for adjusting and controlling the same are well known and are not claimed herein.
The upright g is preferably provided with another ear 9 below the ear g and below the runners, said platform being adapted to sup port the operator. The runner a is hinged at d to the platform 0. Hence the runner a. is adapted to either stand vcrticaLas shown in Fig. 4., or be inclined, as shown in Fig. 5. The runner a is affixed to and forms a part of the plow, the latter being composed in this in stance of the vertical side piece 6, which is substantially parallel with the runners a and b, and the oblique side piece or moldboard e, which forms an acute angle with the side piece e. The side pieces 0 and e are rigidly confulcrumed at .ear 0, affixed to the platform.
platform 0. A vertical rod 9 is affixed to the ears 9 and g and on said rod plays an Said ear 0 and rod constitute a sliding connection between the plow and the platform. The lever f has an extension f which is perforated to surround and slide on the rod g, the lever being thus held in engagement with the ear g, or, in other words, prevented from lateral displacement relatively to said ear.
The platform 0 constitutes a base having a runner, one of its objects being to support the means employed for tipping the plow. It is not essential that the base be formed to permit the operator to ride upon it, although I this form is preferable.
I claim- 1. The combination of a base or platform having a runner, a plow having a runner hinged to the base, and means supported by the base for tipping the plow sidewise.
2. The combination of a base or platform having a runner, a plow having a runner hinged to the base, and a lever fulcrumed on the base and engaged with the plow.
3. The combination of a base or platform having a runner, a plow having a runner hinged to the base, means supported by the base for tipping the plow, and a sliding connection between the plow and base.
4. The combination of a base or platform having a runner, a plow having a runner hinged to the base, a lever fulcrumed on the base and engaged with the plow, and a sliding connection between the base and the plow, said connection including a vertical rod affixed to the plowand engaged with the lever.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WARREN F.- WHEELER.
