To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. DAVIDSON, of
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and use-I ful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clean` and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paper boxes of that class in which the bottom,
` side, and end walls of the box are formed from a single fiat blank or sheet and in which the side and end. walls of the box are held or c0n-` fined in proper relation with respect to each other and to the'bottom wall by means of integral overlapping parts or aps on the said side and end walls which are detachably interlocked at the corners of the box. 4
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.`
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a scored and cut blank from which the bottom,
. end, and side walls of a rectangular box are made. Fig. 2 is-an outside perspective View of one of the corners of the box when folded.
Fig. 3 is an inside perspective view of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan section of one corner cfa modified form of blank. Fig. 5 is an inside perspective view of the corner of a folded box made up from the blank shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an out-v side View of the wall of the box with which the brace-flap is engaged.`
First referring to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, A designates a rectangular blank which is scored along the lines a a' parallel with the margins of the side and end walls, respectively, of the blank to form the bottom, side, and end walls a2 a a* when said side and endwalls are folded upwardly into their final positions. The side and end walls at each corner of the box are joined in their folded positions by means of aps B C on the side and end walls, respectively, said iiaps being formed from the material of the blank lo cated withinlines forming prolongations of the side and end margins of the blank, so that 5o `the latter may be cut from rectangular stock without waste, such as would result if the fiaps projected outside of the said side and end margins. Said corner of the blank is divided to form said flaps Bl C by two straight cuts, one bisecting the outer angle formed between the intersecting score-lines a a" and the other extending from the outer end of said oblique cut to the end margin of the blank parallel with the side margin thereof. This construction provides on the end of the fiap B a locking-tongue b, which is notched on its outer side edge to provide a laterally-directed prong 6', forming a hooked locking? head. The end wall a* of the box is provided with an angular slit c, which is adapted to receive the tongue when the parts of the box are folded together, and said tongue is obliquelycut away at b2 to permit the tongue to passfreely through said slit. The side wall of the box is provided with a slit b* of looped or U form, the ends of which are located one above the other and in a vertical or nearly vertical line. Said` slit b* f orms a tongue or ear b3, the free end of which projects toward the tongue b or toward the corner of the box. v
In setting up a box made from the blank described .the end walls a* and the flaps C' a. The side walls aware thereafter folded upwardly into position outside of the flaps C in overlapping relation therewith and with their aps B folded outside the end walls a* of the box, and the tongues I thereof are `passed through thelocking-slits c to lock said aps in place'. Before the flaps B` have been locked in the manner described the end margins c' of the iaps C are interlocked withthe tongues b3 on the side walls of the box by inserting said margins between said tongues and the side walls. To accomplish this result, the said tongues are pushed inwardly from the outside by the linger at the time the side walls are folded upwardly into their set-up positions, so that :said margins c' of the iiaps O may be introduced between locking-slits c are the same and' their connected walls, and the said margins will engagethe ends of the slits 6*. It will bef'noted that the angular the yprongs J of the locking-tongues to pass therethrough when said locking-tongues and connected'iiaps are slightly depressed, and
when said prongs have passed through' the slits they spring back to their proper posi-ll with the ends of the prongs above the the manner described, it will be noted thatff the iap B serves as a locking-flap to prevent both the side and end Walls from moving outwardly and that the iiap C serves, in connection with the tongue b, as a brace to prevent inward'distortion or collapse of the box when pressure is applied to the end wall thereof in y a direction to force the saine inward..
The construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the margin c of the Hap C is provided about midway of its length with a short locking projection c2, which when said margin is yinterlocked with the tongue or ear b passes outwardly through the spaceL between. the ends of the slit b2, by which said tongue or ear is separated "from the connected Wall. Said 4 locking projection is made of approximately the same width so that when engaged therewith'it comes i'n contact with the ends of the Uu-shaped slit and prevents vertical vmovement of the iap C relatively to the side Wall of the box,'thereby l giving additional strength and rigidity to the amanner to elongate the margin o corners of the box and preventing dislocation of the parts. In this construction also the oblique margine3 of the iap C' tween its ends 'from that shown in Fig. '1 in of said flap. When the margin c' of the Hap is ,thus elongated, the locking projection may be arranged at a greater distance from the top edge of the box, andthe tongue b on the side wall as of vthe box may be located at. a correspondingly greater distance from the upper margin of thev box than in the construction shown-.in Fgskl, 2, and 3. y
My improvement. vdescribed affords simple means for constructing boxes of this character and at .the 'same' time provides a connection ,collapsing of the end between contiguous side and end'walls of the box ofV great strength and durability. The engagement of the tongues or ears with the iiaps C effectuallyprevents inward movement or walls of the box, and outward movement of-the end walls is prevented by the overlapping and interlockingengagement of the iiap B' therewith. It will be observed that the interlocking iaps at thel corner of the box-form' adouble thickness of paper extending the entire length of the corner, thereby makingv thev corners strong made of a4 size to permitv .that they as the depth of said opening,

My improvements are especially adapted for application to rectangular suit-boxes and boxes `for analogous uses; but it is `obvious may be applied to boxesor receptacles of other contour and for other uses.`

I claim as my invention* l. As a new article of manufacture, a knockdown box, double inner'lock composed of two iaps, one having a hooked locking-head which is passed from the outside through a side slit adjacent to veach corner so that thehooked head will be rlocated in the box and will resist internal pressure, and the other iiapengaging within the box behind an ear cut from that side of the boX carrying the irstmamed iiap and adjacent to each corner so that external pressure tends to move such parts into further engagement, substantially as and forl the purposes set forth.
