PATENT OF IC FENCE-BUILDING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,821, dated March 29, 1904;.
Application filed October 31, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R- WETHINGTON,
varetta, in the county of Woods and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Building Machines; and I do herebydeclare the following to .be a full, clear, and exact description of the I invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to fence-building machinery, and more particularly to a wiretwisting device adapted to secure cross or stay wires to the main or horizontal wires of a fence; and my invention consists of certain novel features of combination and construction of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention, among others, is to provide a simple though reliably efiicient device adapted to twist stay-wires upon the line-wires of a fence, whereby they'will be securely anchored in position.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,which are made a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a panel of a fence and the relative position occupied by my wire-securing device when applied to use in locating the stay-wire upon or in engagement with the main wire. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of my invention complete. section thereof. Fig. 4 is an end elevation showing the twisting-jaws proper and parts carried thereby.
In order to conveniently refer to the various details of my invention and cooperating par ts, numerals will be employed, the same numeral referring to a similar part throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I provide a preferably rectangular body portion 1, formed of a piece of suitable metal bent upon itself, whereby the ends thereof after the rectangular body portion shall have been formed are Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central brought parallel with each other to form the Serial No. 179,313. The jaws 2 and 3 are held 7 slightly separated, as by means of the rib or member 4, secured in place in any preferred way, as by passing rivets 5 through suitable apertures in the jaws and upsetting the ends thereof. It will beunderstood, however, that the bodyportion 1 and jaws 2 and-,3 may be otherwise formed, as by forging, the member 4 being in this case integral with the jaws.
The jaw 3 is provided near one corner upon its inner side with a reduced portion, as indicated by the numeral 6, while the outer end of the member 4 is slightly reduced in thickness and width, thereby forming the shoulders 7 and 8. By this construction of the end of the member 4 the ends of the jaws 2 and 3 are held separated from each other sufiiciently to receive between them a portion of the wire 9, which is stored upon the roller 10, the latter being provided at each end with the guiding disks or flanges 11. It will thus be seen that the shaft 10, being tubular, serves as a spool to hold the wire in place and is adapted to removably receive the supporting axle or shaft 12, one end of which extends through its bearings in the member or body portion 1 and is squared, as indicated by the numeral 13,
whereby a handle may be placed thereon to turn the spool and wind or store the wire thereon. The wire 9, as indicated in Fig. 3, is extended between the jaws 2 and 3 and then directed downward against the shoulders 7 and 8 upon the end of the member 4, this fiosition of the wire being clearly indicated in The flanges 11 are preferably of suflicient size to extend beyond the edges of the body portion 1 and will serve to hold the entire device upon the main or fence wire 14, whereby the device may be readily moved around the wire any number of times to insure that the wire 9 will be properly engaged therewith, all of which is clearly indicated'in Fig. 1.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the construction and manner of using my wire-twisting appliance will be made clearly apparent, though it may be stated that one end of the stay-wire 9 is wrapped around the top fence-wire 14 any preferred number of times to properly secure it in engagement therewith, when the wire 9 is then extended downward to the next main wire and the twisting device caused to occupy the position relative to the main wire indicated in Fig. 1, whereupon the device is caused to move around the main wire any number of times, which will cause the wire 9 to be paid ofl" by the spool between the jaws and between the open ends of the jaws 2 and 3 and the operation repeated upon the next adjacent main wire. After the bottom wire of the fence has been reached the wire 9 may be severed, if preferred, and the operation repeated, or the Wire 9 may be extended along parallel with the bottom main wire and the wrapping or twisting process re peated on an upward line and thence carried along parallel with the top wire and the line of twisting again extended downward.
In order to keep the line-wires 14 properly spaced, I use the spacing-board 15, said board having suitable notches cut in from one side a proper distance apart in which take said linewires when in use. As shown in Fig. 1, the
board is placed on the wires adjacent to the point where it is desired to locate a stay-wire, and after said stay-wire has been placed upon treme outer ends, the separating member having a recessed portion to receive the staywire whereby the stay-wire may be wrapped around the main wires and said parts reliably united together, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
