SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,520, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed April 17,1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ESSE T. MoRRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, county of Norfolk, and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spokerenches for Bicycle and Automobile Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to wrenches which are adapted to be used in the truing of bicycle and automobile wheels where a nipple is threaded through the rim.
The object thereof is to obviate numerous difficulties which have attended the truing of wheels heretofore with other wrenches and to provide a wrench which can be manipulated without the use of both hands, leaving one hand free to use a spokegrip if necessary.
A further object is to provide a wrench -which can be adjusted and clamped on the nipple with one movement of the hand.
. A still further object is to provide a wrench of inexpensive construction and one in which the parts may be easily replaced; also, which may be carried around on the person without any inconvenience.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the combination of parts and novel features, which will be more fully described hereinafter and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

Fig. 8 is a crosssection of another modification, showing a simple form of holding the upper jaw in place. Fig. 9 is a cross-section of another modification, and Figs. 10 and 11 show modifications of the washer and rivet.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 is the body of the wrench provided with the Serial No. 153,003. (No model.
cam-shaped rim 2, which also constitutes the lower jaw. In a depression 3 in the upper part of the body 1 is seated an annular piece 1, adapted to revolve in its seat. In the lower portion of the body 1 is another depression 5, adapted to receive the washer 6, to which the annular piece 4 is secured in any suitable manner, preferably, as shown in Fig. 3, by a screw 7. The annular piece 4 is provided with a depending portion 8, which is deeper than the flange 9, formed by the two depressions 3 and 5, thus leaving a space between the flange 9 and the under side of the annular piece 4. In the under side of this piece 4 is a circular recess 10, in which is seated aspring 11 of the form shown in Fig. 2 and which holds the two parts frictionally from accidental rotation.
Integral with the upper part of the annular piece 1 are two lugs 12 12, adapted to hold the wrench in alinement on the spoke. Opposite to the lugs 12 and integral withthe annular piece 4: is a lug 13, having the projection 14 constituting the upper jaw of the wrench. When the nipple of the spoke is inserted between the projection 14 and the cam-shaped rim 2 and the body turned to the left, the nipple will bear against the lug 13 until clamped by the cam. The spoke lies between the lugs 12 12 and keeps the annular piece 4: from revolving with the body, and thus disengaging the clamp.
The body 1 is milled or notched, so thatafirm grip can be had.
In the modifications shown I have shown how a dished disk 15 may be riveted to the annular piece 4 or the rivet may be integral with the plate 16.
The springs shown in Figs. 6 and 7 are modified forms of the spring 11. (Shown in Fig. 2.) When these forms are used, the circular recess is dispensed with.
In the modification shown in Fig. 9 the annular piece 4: is provided with a vertical and circular flange 17, which is notched to receive the spoke and keep the wrench alined thereon. This flange is also provided with the jaw 19, which acts on the cam-face of the under jaw, the same as jaw 14. in Fig. 3.
In Figs. 10 and 11 I have shown how a starshaped washer and an oblong washer may be used which will lie fiat on the under side of the body 1. These washers are integral with the rivet.
In truing wheels it is often desirable to use a spoke-grip to prevent the spoke from twisting. In most of the truing-wrenches on the market it is necessary to use both hands to clamp the wrench on the nipple. Also in a a great many instances the bicycle is turned upside down and rested on the handle-bars and seat while truing. In this position the operator holds the wheel with one hand and applies the wrench with the other, while in other wrenches both are occupied in setting the wrench and the wheel is liable to tilt and fall.
This wrench is not only adapted for use on bicycles, but in larger sizes it may be used with great advantage on automobile-wheels, the jaws clamping with great firmness on the nipple.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench comprising relatively rotatable jaws, one of which has a cam-face and the other having a portion overhanging said cam-face and adapted to act in conjunction therewith.
2. A wrench having a jaw provided with a depression having a cam-face, an annular piece seated in said depression, and another jaw secured to said annular piece and adapted to hold the nipple against said cam-face.
3. A wrench having a cam-shaped jaw, an-
annular piece seated in a depression in said jaw, a jaw secured to said annular piece and means on said annular piece for alining the spoke on the wrench.
4. A wrench having a cam-shaped jaw provided with a depression, an annular piece seated therein and adapted to rotate, lugs secured to said annular piece, another jaw secured to said annular piece, and means between said annular piece and said first-mentioned jaw for preventing accidental rotation.
5. In a nipple-wrench, the combination of a circular jaw, an annular piece adapted to rotate within said circular jaw, said annular piece having an overhangingjaw, and lugs on said annular piece cooperating with said jaw to hold the wrench in alinement on the spoke.
6. In a nipple-wrench, the combination of an annular piece having a jaw, cam means surrounding said annular piece for clamping the nipple against said jaw and means for holding the two parts together.
7 A wrench comprising pivoted jaws, one of which has a cam-face and an overhanging jaw acting in conjunction with said cam-face.
8. A- wrench having relatively rotatable jaws and lugs cooperating with one of said jaws to aline the wrench on the spoke to be operated upon.
9. A wrench having relatively rotatable jaws, one of which is provided with a cam-face, and the other being provided with an overhanging jaw and lugs adapted to operate in conjunction to hold the spoke in alinement.
10. A wrench comprising two members pivoted together, one of which has an arc-shaped cam, and the other being provided with means for engaging the work comprising a member adapted to move over the cam.
11. A wrench comprising two members pivoted together, one of which has a cam and the other being'provided with means for holding the work at two difierent points, and to cause engagement of the work by the cam.
12. A wrench comprising relatively rotatable jaws, one of which has a cam-face, and the other being provided with means for alining the wrench on the work, and means for causing the engagement of the work by the cam.
13. A Wrench comprising two pivoted members, one of which is provided with a camface and the other being provided with a vertical slotted flange adapted to aline the wrench on the work, said flange also provided with a projecting jaw for holding the work to be engaged by the cam.
