PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SHAMBAUGH, or LAFAYETTE, INDIANA.
GAS-ENGIN ,E COOLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 755,399, dated March 22,1904.
Application flied June30,1903. Beria1No.163,723. (NomodaL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SHAMBAUGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lafayette, in the county ofTippecanoe-and State of Indiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Engine Coolers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gas-engine coolers, more definitely stated, improved means whereby increased radiation of heat is effected.
The invention consists in the special construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will hereinafter be fully described and the novel features pointed out in the subjoined claims.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe it in detail, with reference to the accompany: ing drawings, which form part of this specifi cation. I
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view illustrating the rib projections.
In practicing my invention I employ a series of elongated plates A, extending substantially the whole'length of the engine-cylinder and with the plates arranged in radial position, as will be fully understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of my drawings. A special feature of my invention in connection with 'the elongated and radially-arranged plates is phiyrd' whereby increased rad1 .d with minimum pro ection the meansc" of the plat as.
The radiating-plates A are adapted for the increased or improved radiation above mentioned by having lengthwise grooves a and ribs 12 on their opposite sides, the ribs 6 being provided transversely of the plate witha series of chiselecuts c, forming projections (2. Obviously the projections (1 may be formed by other means than chisel-cuts, the main idea being roughening of the" said ribs to afford increased radiating-surface, and therefore I do not desire to be limited to any particular form. of projection d in the series thereof or means whereby they are formed. The flanges A may be secured to the cylinder B by having their side edges fixedly seated in'snitable grooves C in the cylinder, as shown in Fig. 2
Having thus fully described my invention,-
what I claim is I 1. The combination with an engine-cylinder, of radially disposed plates grooved lengthwise thereof on opposite sides, ribs between the grooves having series of transverse pro jections, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an engine-cylinder, of radially-disposed plates seated in longitudinally-arranged grooves in the cylinder, the said plates being grooved lengthwisethereof on opposite sides, the ribs. between the grooves having series of'transverse projections formed by struck-up portions, substantially as described.
