no WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it l-:nown that I, VILLIhM B.'DODI)S, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Fire-Proof Safes; and I hereby declare'tbe following to be a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ot' this specification.
Myinvcntion nsists in an arrangement of lock and bolt-case,conorete filling, and inside or auxiliary door; by which the entire interior of the door, lock, and bolt-works is accessiblelfor inspection or repair when the door itself is open. v
Figure 1 is a rear side view of the door, with its auxiliary door opened.
Figure 2 is a section of the some in the plane of the arbor, with the auxiliary door closed.
The outer shell of the door consists of the front plate A, edge or cnrb=plntes B, apd auxiliary door 0, hinged to the said plates 13-, and when opened, as in fig. 1, exposing the entire lock andbo lt-case F, and filling F is a T-i'ormed case for the lock and bolt-works. This case F is secured withinthe door by means of the screw-bolts U, and is embedded in the cement or concrete filling E, which cement is made to o ccupy every part of the space within the door around the said'case F, and between that and the front plate A. The plate of the lock-case and the cnrb-plate B being thus screwed fast together, serve to strengthen and's'tifien each other.
The arrangement selected for illustration contains-four door-bolts, of which two bolts G G are restricted to a horizontal path, by means of openings H, in the front edge-of the door, and in the lock-case, and other two,
G G, are restricted to a vertical path, while movingin opposite directions, by openings, H, .in the top and slots 2' i, occupied by pins J J, which serve to guide the bms to a. vertical path. The bars I I terminate with studs K K, which occupy slots ZZ, in a circular or other suitable plate, L, made fast to the arbor M of the operating-knob or handle N. Other studs, 0 0, upon the bars I I, occupy slots 019", in bell-cranks P P, whose other extremities entering slots g g in the horizontal door-bolts G G, become instrumehtal in throwing and retracting the latter.
The above-described system-ofdoor-bolts may be held in lock by a lock-bolt, D, entering agein, q, in the plate L, or by any other customary i-or preferred means. The auxiliary door may be fastened by one or more screws, R, or otherwise. Suitableexcavations in the fillings (seodotted lines permit the retraction of the horizontal bolts.
I claim herein as new, and of my inventi0n-- The provision, in a. fire-proof sefe, of the auxiliary door 0, hinged to, and, when, open, affording access to, the entire lock and door-bolt movement and filling ofvthe door proper, as Set forth In testimony of whith invention, I hereunto set my hand.
bottom edges of the shell. Inside of the lock the vertical bolts aforesaid take the form of fiat bars I I, having .W. B. DODDS. Witnesses: I
