UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST MAGNUSON, OF ISHPEMING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JOHN E. BERQUIST AND ERIC BERQUIST, OF ISHPEMING,
MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
y SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 753,720, dated March 1, 1904.
Application filed-November 18, 1903. VSerial No. 181,654. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST MAGNUsoN, a citizen of the United States, residingrv at Ishpeming, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements inV wrenches especially for turning or loosening nuts. It is simple, readily applied and manipulated, and effective for its work, and cheap of manufacture.
l It consists ofstructural features of novelty, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and particularly pointed outby the claim concluding the following specification. In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is aside elevation thereof. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken inward from and viewing the inner movable jaw. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section produced in a line passing transversely through the jaws viewing, however,
the rack upon the shank of the handle in side elevation. Fig. 11 isa transverse section taken on the line w w of Fig. 1, showing more especially the latch or detent keeper, the spring engaging said detent, and the pivot of the last noted.
Inl the carrying out of my invention -I employ a handle-bar or shank l, the handle 1 being fixed or applied to said shank at its inner end, which shank has secured to its outer end the xed or stationary jaw 2, and preferably cast laterally thereon is a rack 3.
Slipped or inserted upon the shank or bar l is a movable or sliding jaw 4, having in addition to the opening therethrough which receives said shank or bar a recess 4, terminating in said opening, to provide for the reception of the rack 3 and the sliding of said jaw over said rack. Said movable or sliding jaw is equipped upon one side with a detent or latch 5, preferably let into said jaw, espe-4 cially at one end, which end is pivoted thereto by a pivot 5a passing therethrough and relatively enlarged and rounded, as at 5b. Said' latch or detent is guarded at its outer free end from lateral displacement by an outstanding right-angled stud or guard 7, Xed to the movable jaw and flanking said end of said detent. A spring 6, preferably fiat, encompasses said end enlargement of said latch and bears and exerts pressure upon the latter to render it effective to engage the rack 3. A keeper 7', having its ends preferably let into and secured to said movable jaw, forms a bearing for the pivot 5 of said latch or detent, said keeper also serving to prevent lateral displacement of the spring 6 by guarding it at its outer lateral edge, as shown. f
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to details herein, as they may bel at its free end, a keeper secured to said movable f `jaw and forming a bearing for the pivot of saidlatch, said keeper guarding said spring laterally as against displacement, and a guard for the free end of said latch, secured to said movable jaw.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. l AUGUST MAGNUSON.v
